My grandfather knew this story well - and even visited Nicaragua to better appreciate the experience. After arriving in California, my Great Great Grandfather and his brother worked in the foothills selling goods to miners and served as guides between San Francisco and the Gold Country. He eventually established a farm and ranching operation in Danville, and while no longer in operation, many of the buildings remain on the remaining acreage. Prior to this article, I did not realize that going via Nicaragua meant steam ships were used, I had assumed it was sailing vessels.
