For the record there were lots of bombs and guns around that time so all of Erin’s worries and reactions were actually founded on a proper fear. She wasn’t just being a stupid Teenager, she just got more worried cos she is a teenager I would say. Also it’s just the cultural difference but the Grandad you can tell he does love Gerry. That’s just his way of loving him I know it seems weird and seems like he really hates him and sure he dislikes him a bit but he loves him too. So he doesn’t just straight hate Gerry it’s just the way he speaks to him. Like when he said “Piss off Joe” about the Maeve thing, the way he said piss off was a loving way not a mean way. It was a really sweet moment. Also as a New Zealander, his Aussie accent was flawless 😂 it wasn’t bad he was right it was genuinely really good 😂
@@TheCrayonMaster I am an half Australian half Northern Irish(Mum from Belfast Dad from Sydney)... his accent was actually pretty sweet. And has some almost from NI... yes NI people are all nuts :)
Oh did they say she was a stupid teenager for that? I missed it. Also, she has quite the imagination. Idk about him loving Gerry though. When he said that regarding Maeve, yes, it was affectionate. He might love him deep down and is just mad about his helplessness and dependence in various other situations including politically and even living with him to an extent. Otherwise, is it a tradition in Derry to show one’s son in law affection by insulting him every chance one gets? It’s not as one-sided with anyone else except the outsiders (Southerner and “English”). In other cultures where a few outsiders have been railed against within the family… it wasn’t an expression of love lol. Also yeah the Aussie accent wasn’t bad lolol.
Weird to have a baby in the show, with all the restrictions about how long babies can work and how difficult it is to keep them happy for filming, when they hardly talk about her, let alone have her relevant to the plot. Maybe I'm just too early in the show.
@@Br0nto5aurusno your not they never do she had nothing to do with any of the plot maybe she’s actually one of the actresses babies that just is always on set or directors so they don’t wanna leave her home and they just show her on the show here and their and the rest of the time just keep her on set idk
The conflicts between the Irish (Catholic) and the British (Protestant). The Civil War was in the 1920's where Northern Ireland split from Ireland. The parades were being helped by the Orange Order (Protestant). The Irish Resistance was trying to fight for Northern Ireland to break from the UK and rejoin Ireland. Emmett was part of the Irish Resistance which is why he was trying to cross the border. They used sterling (British money) in Northern Ireland. The punts were the currency in the Republic
Just for context guys the march that was occurring was by the orange order which is unionist which is why the family were leaving cause it can cause tensions between the catholic community there I only know this cause my dad and grandad lived in Northern Ireland and served during the troubles and it’s still confusing to me so I hope this helps explain it a bit great reaction
how was this commented 12 days ago when this video was uploaded less than 12 hours ago? does RUclips take into account different platform upload dates?
Punt is the Irish word for pound - the Irish pound was the currency of the Republic of Ireland until the change to the Euro. Free State is referring to the republic, when it split from Britain Northern Ireland was created and on the other side of the border, the Irish Free State. That didn't last very long but people north of the border still often refer to the republic as the Free State as a way to differentiate. The Orange Order are a -bunch of wankers- group that commemorate the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, when the Protestant forces of William III defeated the mostly Catholic forces of James II, the usurped king of England, Scotland and Ireland. This victory ensured the Protestant Ascendancy in Northern Ireland, which is the reason it split when the republic left the UK.
The continuous existence of Orange Order baffles me. It's like one of those things that cruel people do just to be cruel but instead of some knobheads, it's entire denomination.
As a dane (and an idiot) I was an adult before I realised that the protestants in this whole irish situation was anglican protestants and not lutheran protestants
I always thought the reason the granddad wanted to take him is because he was an IRA member, basically on the side of the Irish Catholics. But taking him just to oppose Gerry is a good point too
Yep lol. Every chance he gets to stick it to em. Also part of the issue when he was driving and “keeping his family safe.” To a lesser degree, he was willing to screw over his family to stick it to Gerry regarding the photographs. No surprise his anger at the Orange men and police overcame that promise. XD
So if they took Emmett and were caught at a checkpoint that could potentially be seen as harbouring a terrorist so that’s why they wouldn’t take him. You guys should watch a documentary or the film Belfast there’s a lot of context you’re missing and this would probably help x
Love your reactions - but I think context is really important for this show, as silly and carefree as a lot of it is. It takes place in the 80s (Chernobyl) but the fallout of the Troubles is still there - it's not over. As recently as 2019, Lyra McKee - an Irish journalist - was killed in Derry during a violent clash between "dissidents" and police - the police were doing raids looking for munitions stashes . There was a standoff. Lyra - just 29 years old - who had already made a name for herself writing about the Troubles' so-called aftermath on her generation (so-called because it's not really over) - was there to report on the violence - cars were set on fire, bombs were thrown, and a man shooting at the police hit Lyra instead. He was supposedly New IRA. It was a huge huge deal. Worldwide condemnation from Presidents and Prime Ministers. Prime ministers came to her funeral. Sinn Féin leaders. so "the Troubles" are far from over. Just a month ago - charges were FINALLY brought against the man supposed to be responsible for Lyra's murder (he wore a mask on the night he shot her - the whole thing was caught on cell phone videos). two of my friends are Belfast journalists who knew Lyra . Her murder continues to reverberate. I think it would be good to look into the history of this a little bit - because it's not confusing at all when you know the background.
The Protestant 'Marching Season' has been a high spot for tension between the Nationalist (mainly Catholic) community and the Unionist (mainly Protestant) community in Northern Ireland. At this time (when the show was set) there would be huge issues for the authorities about the permitted routes of the marches, trying to balance the right of the 'Orangemen' to march, and the rights of the Catholic not to be harassed- or worse. The fuss about the Punt purse is because the Republic of Ireland, where they are heading, has a differnt currency to the UK (which Northern Ireland is part of). She has only got her usual pounds sterling with her and has lost her Irish currency. Emmett was a member of an illegal terrorist organisation.....so when Erin heard a ticking bomb- it wasn't entirely impossible that he had something explosive with him. The argument about whether or not to take him was based on what the consequences would be for them if they didn't! I think James' purpose in this episode was to show that what the Derry community accept as normal isn't really......
9:56 Reasons why you cannot just call the police (whether it's an IRA man in your car - the republicans - or a UDA man in your car - the loyalists) apparently include: a) because no matter what side they're on, you call the police on them word will get back to their group, and then they'll come after you because they'll know you're a grass (a rat, a snitch, a squealer) and then you'll have to spend the rest of your life checking your car for bombs and b) because the police take too long about stuff and you get more stuff done when you just call up your neighbours
Why you wouldn't take him is your vehicle might get searched at a checkpoint and they might find someone who had indirectly killed someone in your boot. I mean would you drive across the border with Canada with someone who had indirectly killed someone hiding in the trunk?
I'm sure people have already mentioned but it would probably be a good idea to watch a few videos on the Troubles. It would give you a much better understanding of the show.
@@Loweene_Ancalimon the place I was working was halfway between Waverley station and the Scottish parliament, just off the Royal Mile. Yeah it was surprising, never seen them since either. Apparently they were actually all from out of town, not necessarily from Edinburgh themselves.

2;47 A band playing at a march commemorating William of Orange's victory against James the 2nd. William of Orange was a Protestant King from the Netherlands who fought against his Catholic cousin (from his mother's side) King James the Second. So yeah, the march is celebrating protestant victory over catholic - and the march generally not only goes through protestant neighbourhoods in Northern Ireland but also through Catholic neighbourhoods which from what I can tell generally strikes many as obnoxious and 'rubbing it in'. Generally anti-catholic/anti-unionist slurs get thrown and so do anti-protestant/anti-loyalist slurs so yeah, in that time at least a lot of riots happened. Nowadays not so much but apparently it's come close a few times.
6:51 Some reckon the Orange order would've beaten James up because he's English but is living on the Irish Catholic side of town so they'd see him as a traitor.
