    Just the video I was looking for. Keep up the phenomenal work. I purchased the Deity mic 2s.

    These are the mics i use. I like the ntg5 more but will pull out the diety s mic for some situations but generally use it as my bulletproof/semi sacrificial mic because it really is a tank. The 2s i generally use on camera for mor run and gun but it does have noticable self noise issues in my experince

      Thanks Kyle. Yes, same for me! I like the smaller form factor of the Deity for On-Camera sound, but the Rode is definitely more sensitive, bass-y. I typically keep my Rode on the Boom Pole setup, and my Deity on-camera. I'm gonna try to listen closer for self-noise like you said, but I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary yet.

    Impressive content, mate. I like the RODE way better here despite the difference in price. SUBBED!

      The sound is noticeably different. Thanks for subbing too.
      Sidenote, the included cable for my Rode Pistol grip got damaged loading into a shoot yesterday. Didn't work for me on a job, and it's $60 to replace! I just plugged it straight in through a long XLR but Dang... now I gotta put more money into Rode boom kit, lol!

    i picked up an NTG5 used for $290 a cpl months ago, LOVE it! run it into a Zoom F3, which i use w my FX3 bc i don't like the plastic handle... baffles me why they'd force that upon us, tho i understand the audio's nothing w/out it so I guess it's partly a space thing, but i just love the build and quality of the FX3, and run and gun I don't want to use a plastic handle. I have the KB handle and cage and it just feels sooo much less precarious.
    great vid, subbed

      @D R lol i dunno why i was ranting about the top handle on this vid, it was late and things were starting to run together for me...
      but yeh, i tried as many of the "best value" shotguns from amazon as I could, during the holidays you can order sth from them ~month before BF and not have to return it til almost Feb (i'm sure you're aware), and as i loathe them as a blatant monopoly I try to take advantage of their return policy to demo gear, and as i was just about to order the NTG5 to test one came up on ebay and i pulled the trigger w/out even testing one, bc i felt like it was a good deal, if i didn't like it i could easily recoup, but man oh man is it amazing... I've been going out w it and a LOM Geofon I got recently, goin into the Zoom, and the LOM gives me this extra sub-bass I can mix in that's *amazing*.. my background's in music/sound, i just got my first real vid cam last BF and i'm having such a blast w everything... gonna order a sirui saturn later today i think! but then I've really gotta get on my grind and start trying to get clients so I don't regret having bought all this stuff... :)
      be well man

    Your voice sounds so much better with the rode

  • @gigihanmandarin
    @gigihanmandarin Год назад +1

    Please allow me to comment that the tests are a little flawed. Rode is a more sensitive microphone (louder) hence when you test the two mics subsequently with the gain knob at the exact same level definitely the Rode will sound louder and clearer and this can be wrongly perceived as "better sound quality". What you should had done was to raise the audio level of the Deity in post to match the level of the Rode so we could hear the differences in their sound quality rather than their loudness (volume).
    The Deity sounds more tinny and flat but at this stage I am not sure how much of the perception is caused by the difference in volume.

    Good content Ray. I think the Rode sounds better, I might be bias because I own it. I Really prefer the little Sony ECM-VG1, love it👍

    • @RayValencia

      Thanks Trucker John!! The Rode is definitely more sensitive. I have not tried the Sony out, but you own the Rode and still like the Sony better? Wow. That's saying a lot. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll need to check that out.

    Just the video I was looking for. Now I’m just a little torn which mic to get lol. I like the length of the deity but the rode sounds better mounted on the camera with the subject not right near the camera. For a “documentary” style run and gun camera, longer mics show up in frame when zoomed all the way out.

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  Год назад

      I definitely like the shorter size of the Deity for an On Board mic! For sound, the Rode is more sensitive, but you could always boost the gain a little more on the Deity.

      @creativcluster Год назад

      @@RayValencia I would like to know do you boost the gain in post or on the xlr handle?

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  Год назад +2

      @Creativ Cluster I set the mic level on the handle first, and make sure I'm in the safe range not to Clip any sounds, but still maintaining an average of about -12dB (on the Camera Audio bars).
      Then, in Adobe, I usually bump it up another 3-6 dB, depending on how much I'm matching it with other Audio Clips.

    Can the Sony FX3 be used with a K7F Concept CM-500 microphone?

  • @erickperdomo277

    I need a good shotgun mic for my FX30- i have the Sony ECM-B10 which is good and compact but only usable if I DON'T USE the XLR handle. so for conferences I usually run a lav or hand held mic connect to channel 1 and I need a XLR shotgun to connect it to channel 2...some times just for background and sometimes for back up...how is the Sony ECM-XM1 shotgun mic? I'm sure not as good as the Rode or the Deity but a lot more affordable...just wondering if anyone has first hand experience with this mic. I wish I could afford the Deity S-Mic 2S!

    Would you recommend the NTG5 or the Sanheiser MKH 50 (price not being an issue)? Thanks!

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  Год назад +1

      I've never used the MKH 50, but I have had great experience with Senheiser on a lot of high end sets. Most pro audio guys I've met like Senheiser. I personally have the NTG5 and I like the sound of it, although it is a little bass oriented, and more sensitive than my other mics.

    How do you deal with the sensitivity of the ntg5 on a handheld set up?
    Mine picks every little movement on the camera

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  Год назад

      On the FX3, I added the SmallRig XLR handle extension to give it a more solid build and added the soft side of Velcro on all the places my hands touch the plastic part of the handle. On the FX6, I don't hear it as much, because the handle is pretty solid. But I've added some velcro in areas on it too. Mostly for attaching things like a Tentacle timecode device.

      Double bummer. And I hate the red plastic holders, even if they are good, they look so cheap and tacky.

    I also want to hear the silent section for white noise. It's not a good thing to talk non-stop talking
