I dont think my ears pick up the low tones of the washtub bass. I can never hear those things. I've had people "play" them in person and I just cant hear anything off them.

What makes the real difference is he's moving the stick back and forth, which changes the tension in the string, which changes the pitch. It's called a washtub bass, and it's a very real thing. If you have a decent set of speakers or headphones you can hear him clearly, and he's exactly on pitch note-wise.
