kaworu: i wanna live the rest of my life with you, stay with you, have happy mornings with you, eating breakfast together and being happy cause you’re amazing and wonderful shinji: k- kaworu: NO HOMO THO
Original version: A heartfelt confession of Kaworu about his feelings for Shinji Netflix version: Two bros sitting in a hot tub five feet apart because they're not gay
The word love was super important to Shinji’s character in this moment, as no one in his life had ever told him that they truly loved him. People liked him, but that wasn’t the same as loving him.
I'm not mad at the "It means I like you", even though using "In other words, I love you." will be more surprising and satisfying on a thermatic level. What I AM mad about, is the freaking "You are worthy of my grace." Like, yes, "koui" literally means "grace, kindness", but put it in this context, accompanied with "my", makes it feels like Kaworu is looking down on Shinji, which is INCORRECT. And if the translator decided to go on the "ambiguos" route, they should've used the phrase "You are worthy of affection.", which could both imply platonic and romantic interest, and serve as a substitute for the "koi" (恋) and "koui" (好意) confusion. Goddamnit Netflix!!!
I think "you are worthy of my empathy" from the original dub is the best translation. It carries warmth, humanity, love in both the romantic and platonic way.
I know the worthy of my grace was supposed to allude that he was an angel, but honestly, him humming the choir song and having it be played when he enters the room is foreshadowing enough
I had to hear for myself after Guigguk shared this info. My conclusion: I like the bluntness of the line "I love you" cuz Kaworu isn't human and woulden't bother with subtleties. However it's still pretty clear the line "I like you" is romantic.
@@PineOwl The entire episode's script is far more accurate to the Japanese. Matt Greenfield confessed that he essentially fansubbed the final stretch of episodes instead of waiting for the official scripts (hence him misinterpreting "koui" as "koi'). One big giveaway of this is his mistaking Asuka's father having sex with Kyoko's doctor in the next room for Asuka's grandmother mourning in the following scene.
No shit I tried watching Netflix Eva and I just sat here like "Shinji sounds like every 12 year old girl reading a yaoi fic can we PLEASE GET SPIKE BACK ON THIS SHIT"
While I feel that love would have sounded more sincere and comforting, I think like also works in a way that teens often say "like" when referring to someone they have a crush on. In my school at least. The actor's voice is also pretty convincing here.
Cliff nailed it as Kaworu! I love his voice for our gay angel boy. It's a shame they changed "love" to "like" in this scene, but I still got the sense of Kaworu's infactuation for Shinji nonetheless. Also saying you love someone after only talking to them two times is very unnerving and unnatural, so I can look past it.
@@JayAreAitch I wouldn't say that ''i love you'' is an incorrect translation perse. Depending on the context, ''suki'' can mean ''love'' instead of ''like''.
personally i like that kaworu says i like you instead of i love you. i love you is just too aggressive and feels rushed considering the two have only known each other a day. "i like you" still gets the point across but feels more realistic as it has a flirty connotation.
It's also more accurate to the original japanese. And of course "I like you" still has implications of "like LIKE" even in Japanese. The point is the same.
“Humans live with a constant feeling of pain inside of their hearts, but their hearts are sensitive to pain so it makes living difficult. Their hearts are delicate like glass, yours especially.”
Such an amazing voice but he had to say love. He was agape and you had to round out all the forms of love with him. So dropping the word love leaves out the subtext. And saying like instead makes it a strictly romantic confession. Yes it's weird but that's how it works, even though love is stronger than like, it is more flexible.
@@repeate.6094 I know in japanese the word "suki" can mean either like or love. Lots of japanese is contextual. I think it's pretty safe based on the context that kaworu was telling shinji he loved him. "Ai" and "Koi" are also used to mean love in japanese, but in this instance, word "suki" is used
Dankey Kang True, but “suki” is usually literally translated as “like” as opposed to “love”, though it is what you would say to someone you’re romantically interested in. “Love” is too strong of a word in those circumstances, you rarely hear anyone use “aishiteru” which is literally “love”.
Tbh as a LGBT person myself I actually kinda like the line. While it would've been awesome for him to say I love you, hearing him say I like you sound more realistic. Though the only part that came off as weird to me is the "Your worthy of my grace" line, but it's something I'm willing to gloss over.
In the defense of Netflix, Kaworu used the lighter form of "I love you", the "daisuki" that can be translated to "I like" rather than "I love" in the case of "aishiteru". Plus Kaworu has no grip on the emotions that humans possess (such as love) as it is seen that his interactions with people are oftenly confusing.
The original is "I'm saying I love you" .... I have it on the original English-dubbed video from the 2000's somewhere. I watched it when I was 10 and thought "wwooooooww..!"
Well even thought I really wished they would have used the 'I love you' line I am not mad.
