I love how through the second bit Trace is really keeping it together but you can tell he wants to laugh so hard, but it's literally one take, one camera. What legends..
Not a day has gone by since the episode originally aired that I don't hum or sing out loud "Gamera is really neat, he is filled with turtle meat." This has to be the most insidious ear worm ever.
This is the MST3K Dream Team: Joel, The Bots, Dr Forrester and TV's Frank along with whatever crazy ass character Mike would cook up that week. Absolute comedic brilliance.
This is so incredibly hilarious and ingenious. Just the abrupt tonal change, the ridiculousness of having Frank and Trace sitting rapt at a piano bar in Deep 13, the hilariousness of treating the gamera song as a piano piece. MST3k was just so perfect it hurts during this stretch.
The regular Gamera Song never fails in making my ears bleed, but thank god that Mike Nelson/Michael Feinstein found a way to turn it into a masterpiece.
Shit... this is really good. I wonder if it was Mike himself who had them angle the camera like that. "I want them to be able to see that I can actually play."
Michael J. Nelson gave MST3K its finest moment in this skit. He wrote all the music, and aced the performance. The show was never again this good. Great supporting job by Joel and the bots, and a perfect film to riff.
My dad walked through the living room while this was going. He stopped, watched, and was really impressed with the actual playing. He doesn't impress easy.
@@thecatadors911in the Cave Dwellers episode, during the part when Joel and the Bots are doing their version of the movie credits, there is a piece of synthesizer music playing. It's called 'Jupiter', and Mike composed and played it. He also recorded a bit of Beethoven's Voldstein Sonata for the Amazing Colossal Man episode, which Kevin Murphy reviews as the Music Critic Plant that the Mads invented for the Invention Exchange at the beginning.
@@nina1522 mikes the man. Super talented and ashame all he really did was mst3k and rifftrax. I think he coulda been a great actor just based off his characters he does in mst3k like torgo or jack perkins
This reminds me of John Candy and Eugene Levy as the polka band The Happy Wanderers. Specifically, I’m thinking of their salute to John Williams. They had to rewrite John Williams’ various theme songs as polkas just to make the skit work.
Not this though. This is the Gamera theme song from the Gamera film series. EDIT: The first part is the theme song. I see Mike there playing an original song on the piano now. Sorry.
Servo throws in a "You betcha!" in there after their first line of gibberish. I remember that from twenty years ago...still makes me laugh hysterically!
This brings me such tremendous joy. Particularly the second segment of Mike on piano. First off it showcases just how incredibly talented an artist in general Mike was/is. It really brings me back I am "only" 31, but given the series air date I suppose that likely puts me in the slightly younger demographic of true fans. I am just so thankful my step dad was absolutely in love with the show, and it was just on so much that it naturally turned into something that I loved and continue to. This Mike Gamera rendition is definitely among my favorite non-movie moments. So many great moments, I just loved having this pop in my head from time to time. "Sack of monkeys in my pockets! Burnings rubber tires", "Aw, I'm huge look at me. Aahh I'm a 50 foot man etc", and "No springs, No Mike!" a couple of many other fond memories that come to mind.
Mike composed and/or performed several pieces of music for the show over the years. One of the best examples is in the Cave Dwellers episode. In the segment when Joel and the Bots are recreating the movie's opening credits, the music is an original piece that Mike wrote and played called 'Jupiter'.
Absolutely fabulous. Mike has it down perfectly. He should guest on Jonathan Schwartz's show along with M Feinstein. That would be hilarious. Dualing Feinsteins.
OMG, I had such a gay-teen crush on Mike Nelson back in the day! Could anyone else be so handsome and virile while crooning "He is filled with turtle meat" with such conviction? P.S. Yes, yes -- Joel was in many ways funnier in the host segments. But Mike was S-E-X-Y.
Sorry for the 6-month delay, Cambot -- I blame tachyon interference between Earth and the Satellite of Love. Anyway, though, I'm curious to know whether you ever made the acquaintance of 4Q-2, the robot from "Hardware Wars"? (I recall that Crow and Servo used to gossip about other robots -- like, Twiki from _Buck Rogers_ was totally lame, but the killer robot that attacked Farrah Fawcett in _Saturn 3_ was kinda cool.)
This whole thing reminds me of NPR’s ‘Performance Today’ with Fred Child, coming to you from the Maude Moon-Weyerhaeuser Recording Studios. Bruce Adolphe will be up next with the Piano Puzzler…LOL
For decades, I've been entertaining the thought that, at some point, Tom says the line as, "Gamera is really neat, Gamera is luncheon meat, Everyone loves Gamera!"
I don't see how it could be considered non-PC, it is a reflection upon the many Japanese monster movies that they produced after getting their ass kicked, during WW2. I think they were trying to project the destruction they suffered from Allied bombings. And don't forget the one scene in Neptune Men movie, where they show a building with good ole Axis partner Adolf the Hitler statue. That was a real wake up call for the boys...
I love how the whole bit with Mike was done in one take to one camera. You can see the two at the back really doing a good job of keeping it together.
I love how through the second bit Trace is really keeping it together but you can tell he wants to laugh so hard, but it's literally one take, one camera. What legends..
This right here is the genius of Michael J. Nelson perfectly expressed in just a few minutes.
Not a day has gone by since the episode originally aired that I don't hum or sing out loud "Gamera is really neat, he is filled with turtle meat." This has to be the most insidious ear worm ever.
"Kill him. Better yet, I'll kill him. You push the Button."
- Doctor Forrester, MST3K
This is the MST3K Dream Team: Joel, The Bots, Dr Forrester and TV's Frank along with whatever crazy ass character Mike would cook up that week. Absolute comedic brilliance.
Perfect MST3k Team!!!❤❤❤❤
Some of the best moments on the show.
It sort of sneaks up on you. "Boo", it says. Love the little things.
"It sorta sneaks up on ya, 'boo' it says." that was so great.
IT Is so perfect it hurts! Well said Emp!
+.
Exquisitely executed, the greatest skit imo.
It kind of sneaks up on you, "Boo," it says.
I've been sneaking that quote into conversations for almost 20 years. 2 people have recognized it.
Mike working his magic long before he took over
I would watch the Michael J Nelson piano hour any time.
Gamera's enchantment still grows
...and fills our hearts with love.
The regular Gamera Song never fails in making my ears bleed, but thank god that Mike Nelson/Michael Feinstein found a way to turn it into a masterpiece.

"Shell, teeth, eyes, claws, scales, breath-fun." 😂
It sneaks up on you - “boo,” it says.
That's enough about what you request every time you visit your dominatrix.
Wow, Mike actually has some chops there.
I’m experiencing DEEP HURTING…
From Michael Nelson’s sheer genius
Young dark haired Mike Nelson looks like the son of Jim Carey and Norm MacDonald.
Mike was the best replacement.
The only downside to the Michael Feinstein evening is that it ends.
3:36 the unintentional foreshadowing. "His experiment needed a new test case so they conked him on the noggin and they shot him into space"
:O
Brilliant Evan.
Mike is absolutely brilliant as Michael Feinstein. And he can really play piano....
My dad walked through the living room while this was going. He stopped, watched, and was really impressed with the actual playing. He doesn't impress easy.
Ive been looking for any other videos of him playing bc its beautiful

This is so brilliant! Does anyone realize how brilliant Mike Nelson is for composing that jazz odyssey?
I grew up on the wrong side of the Atlantic for MST3K. I feel my childhood was cheated...
Who knew that Mike could play the piano, and play it so well?! I'm always amazed at how talented this cast is.
This reminds me of John Candy and Eugene Levy as the polka band The Happy Wanderers. Specifically, I’m thinking of their salute to John Williams. They had to rewrite John Williams’ various theme songs as polkas just to make the skit work.
Fell asleep at the start of the gamara a thon and woke up to this in the morning 7plus hrs later, and can't get this joyfully tune out if my head.
Gamera is the friend to all children.
Yes. He. Is. ❤️❤️❤️
Mike perfectly encapsulates those cultural asides from shows like Mister Rogers' Neighborhood that I watched as a child.
Anytime you want some moonbeams... Gamera, is the thing.
I watch all this comedic excellence and I'm reminded of how Japan threw a shit fit over MST3K mocking Gamera.
What do you mean?
This was the most beautifully-comedic moment on that show.
Perfection.
That Cole Porter anecdote! Priceless!
🎶It sort of sneaks up on you and boo it says 😂
Nothing like this on TV since.
Mike wrote about 70% of the music used on the show.
Well that was the problem. That's why they finally shot him into space. 😁
Not this though. This is the Gamera theme song from the Gamera film series.
EDIT:
The first part is the theme song. I see Mike there playing an original song on the piano now. Sorry.
We went from Mike's Wonderful music to the utter garbage that is Mother Crabber.
This is the best thing ever created in the history of the universe. I am now a person of faith, thanks to Mr. Nelson.
Servo throws in a "You betcha!" in there after their first line of gibberish. I remember that from twenty years ago...still makes me laugh hysterically!
I hate to do this to you, but he's actually yelling "you-die-joe!"
I love Mike's descending "Ga-Me-Ra" at 2:37.
Mike Nelson ladies and gentlemen.
I love all of the MST3K Japanese movies. This featured the genius of Mike.
I am happy Gamera is finally getting an anime.
"Boo, it says"

Mike nelson is a g playing piano… i play piano and hes 100% playing whats being played. Fact check me

Hirohito Gamera is best Gamera
What an ENCHANTING anecdote! :D :D :D
Mike is awesome in his Michael Feinstein impression. Great piano chops, too!
Mike Nelson's awesome
Mike sure knows how to tickle those ivories.
Dear God does Mike look young here.
Mike sounds a lot like Ben Folds when he really gets into it!
Damn you Mike, stop making me fall in love with you!!
Absolutely fabulous. Mike has it down perfectly. He should guest on Jonathan Schwartz's show along with M Feinstein. That would be hilarious. Dualing Feinsteins.
The Gamera movies are some of MST3K's finest work. I have them all on DVD! :-D
😃Wow, didn’t know Mike N. played the piano so well!
You know, as much fun as MST3K is... I really enjoy Gamera. It is just so silly
Same
OMG, I had such a gay-teen crush on Mike Nelson back in the day! Could anyone else be so handsome and virile while crooning "He is filled with turtle meat" with such conviction?

ThrobertMcGee gaaaaaaaaaaaaay
OMG me too!!!
Well, yeah, he said it was gay.
you're not alone in the crushing--I had a straight girl teen crush on him too, for the exact same reasons! How could anyone not have a crush on him?
Sorry for the 6-month delay, Cambot -- I blame tachyon interference between Earth and the Satellite of Love. Anyway, though, I'm curious to know whether you ever made the acquaintance of 4Q-2, the robot from "Hardware Wars"?

I watch this once a week.
Can you still join the MST 3000 Info Club?...I haven't got a news letter in like 15 years.
GAMERA WINS THE PENNANT! GAMERA WINS THE PENNANT! GAMERA WINS THE PENNANT!
I totally buy Trace's performance. I don't think he's acting.
Is it weird I can’t stop watching this? What talent!
Oh, hi Mike!
GAMERAS ENCHANTMENT STILL GROWS
BOO IT SAYS
IM DEAD
Had to listen to this again after finding about the new anime.
I almost broke my desk with my fist when he sang "Spring Spring Spring"
How many minor roles did Mike play on the show before becoming host? lol
I know this comment is ancient, but if anyone hasn't see Mike's Morrissey do a search on youtube.
Quite a few. They said they would use all the writers and film crew to fill the on screen roles they needed.
This won't go over today.
I miss the days when they were willing to put goofy, stupid, hilarious crap on TV
One of my favorites-thanks!
Best comedic piano act since Chico Marx.
Mike was really cute back then!
Simply enchanting.
No, he is filled with TURTLE meat
His voice is so soothing here
For decades, I've been entertaining the thought that, at some point, Tom says the line as, "Gamera is really neat, Gamera is luncheon meat, Everyone loves Gamera!"
MST3K was the best with Mike Nelson hosting.
Wow, Mike can really tickle the Ivories huh?
Gimme a cigar and a G&T, I'll listen to Lounge Gamera all night...
I like mikes reaction to kill him he just looks like ugh not another one who's going to kill me I bet they wont even tip
I always liked both Mike and Joel, but Mike was the cutest to me when I was younger, I remember.
I miss this show
Brilliant skit.
Let's have Gamera for Thanksgiving!
People who dislike this fun video will be consumed by Gamera ... just any moment now :)
Came here to listen before new Gamera MST3K premier!
I didn't know Micheal Keaton was on MST3K :P
beautifully absurd
2:49 *"Boo"* it says
Gypsy with lips 💋
Oh hai, Mike
At 3:11 Mike looks like John Glover.
YES!!! Hirohito Gamera!!!
Hatsau!!!
Why does Mike keep turning away from the only members of his audience?
Playing to the camera.
Definitely could not get away with that first song today.
And it's hilarious, and I'm a weeb but still find it funny.
