According to photos in one of the two making of Jaws paperbacks in the 70s, Meadows (the newspaper editor) was on a smaller boat with others (could have been Brody and Hooper (it's been some time since I owned those paperbacks)) in the daytime. The photos showed Meadows falling overboard during the process of exploring the shark-attacked boat.
In the novel, Meadows had a much larger role and was a friend of Brody's.

Funny fact, Jaws was filmed in April at Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The water is freezing during that time of the year, so the mechanical shark kept breaking down. So this was a huge risk to mainly show the fin & play the "duh, duh, duh" music. Jaws was the 1st movie label Summer Blockbuster & obviously the fin & music worked.
I live in Massachusetts & every summer they screen Jaws on the beach at night, I can tell you 1st hand it scares the shit out of you to watch & hear the water right next to you.

      Hi
Im afraid that's become a myth. The mechanical shark was not intended to be used for the beach scenes. Those scenes were filmed in May and June 1974. The shark was not intended to be used until July, for the boat scenes. The first half of the film was made more or less on schedule. The shark wouldn't work for the boat based scenes and the shoot carried on through September because of it.
This is all in The Jaws Log and Memories From Martha's Vineyard.

Shark populations were declining BEFORE Jaws. The game fishing for sharks took off after WW2. By the 1950s game fishing for sharks was a big thing. The all time record rod and reel great white was in 1959. Alf Dean. Nothing to do with Jaws.
Off Australia in the 1950s and 1960s the grey nurse shark suffered a major decline in it's population due to spear fishing. Those sharks looked dangerous so they were wiped out. Again, nothing to do with Jaws.
When Ron and Valerie Taylor turned up in 1971 to film great whites for Blue Water white death they had a hard time finding any and were told the great whites were far fewer in number than before. Locals blamed the game fishing and commercial netters, catching them accidentally (recklessly) as bycatch. Valerie wrote she could see the sharks becoming extinct there before long. Again nothing to do with Jaws. This was all before Jaws was even written as a book.
""you'd have to be pretty ignorant to not see the problem this movie caused""
Of course, Jaws caused some problems for sharks but it was a drop in the bucket compared to the Asian shark finning industry that wiped out hundreds of millions, even billions of them. You should direct your anger at that moreso because that has gone on for decades.
In the long run Jaws has been of benefit to sharks. It lead to a major boom in the interest in sharks and this has lead to far more knowledge and understanding and now people like you and me are on the side of the sharks. Before Jaws few cared at all.
How old are you? Im 50. I saw Jaws at the cinema as a young kid aged 5 when it first came out. I grew up with an interest in sharks and obtained as many books as I could. I was able to obtain older books written before Jaws. They all had the same tone. i.e sharks as the maneater etc. Watch any old black and white movie featuring the sea. Sharks were the villains LONG before Jaws ever came out. I was watching The Most Dangerous Game (1932) the other day. Man falls overboard and is immediately eaten by sharks. This was 43 years before Jaws.

Ah yes, the movie that gave everyone and their mother a fear of the water. Me too, but it also kind of kicked off my love of these animals. ❤️🦈❤️ Also, and I might be wrong about the one who started it, but I think that the author of the story of Jaws (Peter Benchley) felt so bad about demonizing these creatures that he started a conservation fund for them. It may’ve been both him and Spielberg, I’m not sure.
Another thing about this movie: The dynamic between Brody, Quinn, and Hooper, I think, is one of the best dynamics I’ve seen in a movie. It’s kind of like different classes in a video game or role playing - Brody is the tough guy (solves problems with his gun instead of taking a more complicated route, like Hooper with the poison), Hooper is the “voice of reason” (he knows the science behind the monster, and would rather kill it humanely), then there’s Quinn (a hunter in every sense of the word, thinks he could take on the biggest shark ever seen and come out without a scratch). They’re only connection in all of this is knowing that that shark has to die, but it works so well.

You should check out other movies they did. The robotic shark Spielberg used had problems in the ocean water so they didn’t use it at much which made it scarier. The music was made for the film. I saw the trailer for 'The Meg' I think it was and was bored when they immediately showed off the size of it, essentially saying 'we got the biggest shark'. People also enter this movie with the question about the body count, which isn't really that high.
But most of them go real quiet when the tension goes up and get especially shocked when the boy gets eaten on camera.

Jaws: masterpiece. One of my top 20, EASILY.
Jaws 2: not a bad film, actually. No Dreyfuss or Spielberg, but it’s nice to see Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton and an even more on-edge Roy Scheider (who didn’t want to be there.) Pales in comparison though.

I've been watching this movie since I was 7 years old in 1995 but I grew up in Florida in the Tampa Bay area on the west coast. In 2018, probably about 8 months before I moved out of florida, this girl I was seeing and I went to a restaurant named caddy's on treasure Island and they were showing Jaws on two blow-up screens one night and we were literally floating out in the Gulf of Mexico in the water at the beach at night watching this movie. One of the best experiences of my entire life

  • @williamjones6031

    As we go along:
    1. Goof: Chrissies body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed ashore without a large storm over night.
    2. Boy Scouts do not need the mile swim for their merit badge. The mile swim is an accomplishment all it's own.
    3. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along. Spielberg used the animosity to highlight their differences for the movie.
    4. This movie was the very first summer "blockbuster"(released in the same week nation wide).
    5. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kintner actually slapped Roy Schieder. It took 17 takes. One time it was so hard she knocked his glasses off.
    6. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat works every time. Spielberg wanted something earlier because "Bruce" was giving them a hard time
and it would be awhile before he would make his appearance. That's why it took 100 more days than planed to make the movie.
    7. Hooper was right. It was a game fish.
    8. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest ad libs of all time. It was the first time Schieder actually saw Bruce.
    9. The story Quint tells about the USS Indianapolis is true.
    10. Goof: An animal that large couldn't strike the side of the boat that rapidly under water..
    11. I was in the Navy and we were taught to go for the shark's eyes.
    12. My take is that Quitnt's behavior was brought on by PTSD after the Indy story.
    13. In the book not only does Hooper die in the shark cage but he was having an affair with Mrs. Brody
    14. Finally, the only other movie in the series worth watching is JAWS II. It's pretty good. It involves the Brody kids and their friends.
    Including the Mayor's daughter.

With the 3D glasses when the grouper head floated out through the blood, mouth still moving, I started screaming and didn't stop until we left the theater. I will say, however, that the 3rd and 4th films could have been a lot better, but I actually loved the 2nd one. Without giving too much away, the 2nd might be my favorite, due to certain details, especially because of how they ‘deal with’ the shark at the very end.

The reason we don't see the shark a lot is cos it kept breaking down, Spielberg wanted to show it more at the beginning but it would never work so just had it out of sight which actually worked even better as it better to use your imagination in the attack scenes.

Seeing this movie near the sea shore and seeing it in a full house was one of the best theatrical experience I had. The next day my family and I were off Barnegat Bay crabbing and swimming. My mother was unnerved but I went ahead and began writing a sequel to the movie closely mimicking my family vacationing at the NJ shore.
To watch this movie when it was theatrically released in a seashore environment was one of the best experiences of my life. I only wish others who experience this movie later could watch it in the same environment that I did.

Right, now a few words about the much ignored Jaws 2. I was always of the opinion that the coincidences that were required in order for the movie to star Roy Scheider with the same Mayor (yes, he somehow kept his job) in the same place lack credibility to say the least. Once past all that, accepting of the story and suspending your disbelief, Jaws 2 is a well crafted thriller that rightly draws on the techniques (though not all of them) from the first movie and even, in my opinion, outdoes the first film in certain aspects.
Never would there be a sequel that tried harder than this to be as good as the original. It failed, but not by much I think. Roy Scheider acts his heart out, really sells the events to us because it's difficult to believe something isn't happening when he's reacting to it - he was that good an actor. Jaws 3 and 4 were doomed from the moment they decided not to cast Scheider moving forward. To honour the late great Roy Scheider please react to Jaws 2 (2010 and Blue Thunder while you're at it).

The mechanical shark (nicknamed ''Bruce'') wasn't realistic enough so Spielberg keep it's use to a minimum. This actually enhanced the suspense.
This was Spielberg's third feature-length film. His feature-length directorial debut was ''Duel'' (1971) and is well worth a look. My dad made me watch it when I was young to teach me of the dangers of road rage. It made me a better, safer driver.

      Steven Jump,
You are correct about the barrels but incorrect about the dock. The first half of Jaws was filmed without seeing the shark by design. The beach scenes were filmed in May and June 1974 but Bruce was not scheduled to be used in any scenes until July.
The dock scene was filmed in Harthhaven on May 24th, very early on in the shooting schedule. Bruce hadn't even been tested in salt water by then.
The first half of the film went according to schedule in the main with only a few glitches. Non shark related. It was the filming at sea for the Orca scenes where Bruce wouldn't work, taking the production months over schedule.

Once again, I really enjoyed how much you appreciated the acting, and you pointed out the fact that they would have had a boat to film the boat, etc. Great. I'm subscribing! Hey listen: this was Spielberg's first movie. He followed it up with ANOTHER fantastic blockbuster, the dazzling "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind". It was that one-two punch of "Jaws" and "Close Encounters" that trademarked his style and is what his entire reputation and career is built upon, those two back-to-back hits. I HIGHLY recommend seeing "Close Encounters" as your next Spielberg movie. You, specifically, are really going to like this movie, I have absolutely no doubt. After that, you can do all the other Spielbergs in any order you want: but take the opportunity to see these two movies back-to-back so that you can see how Spielberg built his style and career.
