    Those 4 connections that you trimmed are for the sight glass to see the water level and for a level control to add water and/or low water level cut out as a safety device. Most boiler explosions occur when the water gets too low and water is added into a very hot dry boiler. Even low pressure boilers can kill.

    Jonathan is playing with the crane today! Sounds good to me. At one point when that crane was in the woods you was talking about giving up on it. Now look at how great it is. You can do the same thing with that little boiler or just paint it up and make it look good. Something that can help educate people on what it is and how they worked. Makes me think that the big one would be just as bad or worse 🤔. You've got that industrial compressor in run your steam engine with. The choice is yours and only you know how far you want to take this project. Anyways, thanks again for your time and videos.

  • @TBullCajunbreadmaker

    Jonathan, I just wanted to tell you that you did a fantastic job on that boom. The latticework and the frame is great, I would say that just looking at the boom and the construction that the boom structure itself would be capable of at least 30.000 lbs. The liiting factor would be the sheaves and their capacity and the sheaves axles. The sheaves look like 15-20 thousand pound sheaves at least. Your boom cable running a 4 part line will be plenty of weight capacity and your winch cable should be good for at least 12.000 lbs single line and if you run a sheave and double your winch cable you can pick up at least 15-20 thousand pounds even boomed way out to it's max radius. That is a really stout rig you got there I ran a Link Belt a lot that had a 48ft. boom and picked up 20-30 thousand pounds quite a few times when it was 4 parted on the load winch. Cranes are strong when you set the up correctly and you take care to never put much shock load on a line. Just a little shock load can put many times as much dynamic load on a lifting set up as it has on it when it is static. You ight be picking up 5,000 lbs but if your brakes latch don't catch and you let off and the load falls just a few inches before you apply the brakes again, just the extra force of that short fall can multiply your load by mutiple times. You may put 100 thousand pounds of dynamic load on your lifting set up when you re-apply the brakes to catch a falling load. I have seen two cranes shear off of their pedestals from just this kind of accident. The whole crane fell over a hundred feet, one crane and load back onto a work boat and the other straight into the gulf of Mexico. Both operators dead and there were two deckhands that died in the crane to boat accident, plus knocked out the power on the boat and it almost sunk.

    I’ve worked in building that used boilers this size and larger. When it comes to repairing one vs replacing it, the repair almost always wins. Most repairs on boilers are water leaks. This is a low PSI unit, go ahead and fix the leaks. You can do this job better than most boiler mechanics.

  • @carl4043
    @carl4043 3 года назад

    Hey Jonathan if you decide to fix that boiler don't go in there and replace that section, just cut the entire lower portion off, however many inches up you need to to get into good metal. You are not committed to the size of the boiler so it doesn't matter if the whole thing is several inches shorter. Then, you're just replacing the very bottom strip, which is probably rusty too. If you do this you won't be welding inside a cramped box, it will be out in the open.
    After the repair then you just weld the firebox back on, or you can weld it to whatever you're going to use for a firebox.

  • @jamesneitzel5426
    @jamesneitzel5426 3 года назад +1

    I would take a hole saw and saw through just above the bend. As this area is called a mud ring, that may be the reason that water may have pooled when inactive. You can check the thickness, however I think you will find thin metal from corrosion. Cut that lower angle out the full length on both sides and have a steel fab shop bend up 2 L bends to replace. Stay several inches below the stay bolts on the sides.
    When you think about it 15 psi is way lower than a well water system, so 1/4 wall is way overkill. If the steel is sound I think it should be good for 75 psi.
    Good luck.

    It appears that your leaks are just above the Mud Ring. That's a sure sign that the boiler was improperly maintained. Scheduled and through wash outs are necessary to prevent sediment from water impurities settling there and causing hot spots and erosion. I notice welded stay bolts with no tell-tale holes. These should normally be no problem, however, with such a thin shell and firebox they may be the last thing to survive... lol. Look the boiler over for X X X stamped (usually near the fire box door). That would indicate that the boiler has been condemned by an inspector. BTW pressure vessel boilers generally use a boiler only 11 1/2 thread per inch tapered brass wash out plug. Can't use plumbing parts. I don't want to be a spoil-sport, but I'm concerned about your safety.

    Sorry, that the boiler test did not go well. I feel that it will not be the end of your project, it is just another page for you to turn. The crane restoration worked well. I was told that cranes had superior brakes for controlling loads, but I was impressed how well that one worked. Apparently, a crane is 'kinder' because of its better controls so more suitable for hauling delicate items than a tractor or tug. Your rebuilt crane shows how true that story was, an excellent job.

    Those leaks seem to be from the bottom of the "Water Legs". Most boilers had wash-out plugs to flush out the crud that would accumulate as this was the lowest part of the boiler. It would interesting to know if the boiler was drained after its last use (probably not). Even untreated water can have a corrosive effect.

    That grooving between the staybolts is bad news, this is where a catastrophic failure could occur. Before you go any further I would suggest that you use an inspection camera through all orofices looking for corrosion. May I suggest that the leaks in the mud ring is an indicator that there could be other potential places where leaks could progress. If this was my boiler I would renew the plate above the grooved area between the stay bolts and all of the mud ring. I would also drill telltale holes in the staybolts as any leakage from the telltales indicates a broken staybolt.

    Been giving this some thought since I watched the episode. I think that is a really nice boiler sized well to turn the steam engines w/o a lot of overkill. Yeah, it's a bummer to have to weld in confined spaces, but that is one straight confined corrosion point. If the rest is OK, I think it's worth bending a piece and patching it ...

      I have no doubt that our man Jonathan can repair that boiler to stronger than when it was new in that badly rusted area. I'm just not sure how thick he will have to make the patch over that rotted out section.

    Sorry about the boiler but your crane looks like it is working good. The boom looks great. I wonder what the old owner would think and say if he saw it now...

    Typically that mud ring does rot faster than any other part. Most replaced part on steam locomotives during restoration it seems.
