Slight correction, skateboarding was added to the Olympics in 2020 at Tokyo. I watched it then and it was so cool, and mind blowing that all the athletes are like, in their teens or younger. This year one of the Chinese park skate athletes is 11! And Sky brown bronze medallist for GB was 13 in Tokyo! Though, it was only this Olympics where it became a core sport, in Tokyo it was an optional sport, so technically correct in thag it was added to the core Olympics curriculum this year, but yea, it’s debut in Tokyo was amazing. Japan scored gold and silver in the women’s street skate this year

And one of my favourite moments in the Olympics is after 64 years GB won not 1 but two medals at women’s diving 3m springboard synchro and 10m synchro, and that pistol shooter from Turkiye in the mixed pistol doubles who, just showed up without any gear, no eye shield no glass nothing and they managed to get silver

That’s why they have 5 new invited sports in LA instead of the same but with Breaking instead of Karate

the cardboard beds thing is misleading, albeit funny. It was the same in Tokyo, they had the same beds. The reason doesn’t actually have anything to do with preventing banging (in fact the olympic village provides condoms for free to the olympians), it’s entirely because of the cost of buying/dealing with proper beds

Stephen was also the only American male gymnast to qualify for an event final, for which he won bronze. This also isn’t the first time the US has had a specialist on the team, McKayla Maroney only competed vault in the 2012 team final, resulting in her iconic perfect stick on her vault. the fact that I’ve seen like almost all the TikTok’s you showed just tells me how much of the Olympics I’ve been consuming through TikTok. One thing I love is the fact that we’re seeing a whole different side of these athletes on TikTok vs them competing. We see that they’re not stone cold athletic machines, they are human. They’re funny, joke around a lot, do reckless dumb things like breaking cardboard beds, get starstruck for other athletes, and so much more.
I think one side of Olympic TikTok you haven’t mentioned is the pin trading. Some of these athletes are getting really in to it trying to collect as many as possible. It’s a whole Olympic event in itself.

My favorite moments from Paris 2024:
    • Natalia Escalera competing on the asymmetric bars being injured (Mexico is not a powerhouse in artistic gymnastics like the United States) and the Mexican team had to drop out of the competition.
    • Prisca Awiti's first ever medal for Judo in Mexico, she won silver.
    • Osmar Olvera winning the silver medal in the 3 meter springboard along with Juan Celaya, he had to open an OnlyFans account to afford the expenses for international competitions due to problems with the Conade which is the National Commission for Physical and Sports Culture in Mexico.
    • Alan Cleland becoming the first ever Mexican surfer to compete at the Olympics.
    • Uziel Muñoz finishing among the best 8 in shot put.

Context for those who are not Mexican:
In 2023, the National Commission for Sports and Physical Culture suspended the delivery of scholarships to Mexican athletes in aquatic sports due to problems with the now extinct Mexican Swimming Federation and World Aquatics. The form president of the extinct Mexican Swimming Federation, Kiril Todorov, due to mismanagement, embezzlement and being investigated by the FGR for diversion of resources for around $150 million Mexican pesos, for which he was linked to the process and World Aquatics promoted the creation of a Stabilization Committee. Meanwhile, Conade initially gave its support to Mr. Todorov and refused to provide scholarships to athletes who joined said committee, arguing that it was not a valid legal entity to provide resources for athletes.
