Barefoot fans hate these because they're not barefoot enough, supper padded fans hate them because they're too minimalist. Personally I love them. Originally I used them mostly for training runs, say 10K. For races (ironman) I use Hoka Rocket, which have a bit tiny bit more support. My trail glove 5 I started just wearing as a general leisure shoe, oh and I also wear them while sailing. They really are a superb generalist action shoe.
I tried these in store and couldn't believe the excessive arch support. It was so uncomfortable and not what I expected in a minimalist shoe. I quickly placed it back on the shelf!
Hiked the long trail (272 miles) in 13 days with this shoe. It had enough support between my foot and the ground to allow me to average 20ish miles a day while protecting my feet but still giving me good connection to the ground. Am thankful I went with this shoe for the job!
I've just picked up mine this week based on your review, it had all the information I needed to know. So far I took them for one run and I am already excited to wear them! Thank you so much for providing quality content!
Really wish Merrell would listen to their customers. The trail glove 4 was PERFECT. Had I known that they were going to jack this up with version 5 and now 6, I would have bought 10 pairs of version 4.
The two's were better. They exploded in popularity with the barefoot stuff and then realized they could make more by moving into the mainstream nike market. So they are watering down the barefoot branding with these. Oh well. Just get Xeros or something.
I agree! Amazing shoes, stripped down, minimal-ish, very secure fit without the “squish”, heel, or point, roomy toe section….super nice, but I wish there was a little less arch support. Not 100% barefoot, but a really nice in between shoe. A bit less “aggressive” arch (even though it feels nice) would have been perfect for me. Still…I think these are great, and will get a ton of use.
Thank you for coming up and saying more or less these are NOT barefoot shoes as they completely are NOT. They do look awesome, but they also have a foam midsole s that zonks them from being “barefoot”. Great video. The new Vapor Glove looks like a great update as well.
Completely agree that the biggest problem with these is the aggressive arch support. I've been running in them for about a month, and I'm getting used to them, but i wish that high arch support wasn't there.
Although this is not a barefoot shoe. This is a great transitional shoe. Like myself going from 8-10mm heel drop. Using this zero drop shoe with that little bit of midsole and arch support makes it easier to get used to "barefoot". I brought the vapor glove 4 and it's to much to soon I think. I'm not used to all that lump and bump feeling just yet. That being said I am using the glove trail 5, not this 6th version. I would avoid 6, get a 5 as this arch support looks much more prominent and aggressive than the trail 5.
My favorite shoe is my Trail Glove 4s. They are getting pretty worn and I don't use them all the time. But I haven't found anything else I like as much. I wear them for trail running and for track running. The arch area looks very similar to the 6 but it doesn't bother me and my arches are pretty minimal. I wear them in an 11, which is my usual size. I live in Japan and it's hard to find a pair of sevens in my size but I'd love to get a pair.
I got mine from sports basement, I didn’t read any reviews first, but I’d have to say despite the shit reviews this shoe has it has been a bigg help to me, I’ve tried a few dozen brands and styles and they’ve always ended up causing me pain at some point. But so far this has been incredibly easy to wear as a casual everyday shoe. Very happy with them. Wear 9.5 same as most brands
I love my Trail Glove 4. They are falling apart. I Iove my Trail Glove 4. I wish I bought 10 pairs. Merrell has absolutely lost their way. Coming from the Trail Glove 4....the Trail Glove 6 is absolute trash.
The "arch support" in this shoes is absolutely horrible. It's like having a huge stone under your foot. Simply standing brings me pain. I'm wearing them first day so I hope it'll get better but holy shit, even thinking about wearing them makes my feet hurt. I'm considering throwing them into garbage bin.
Seethi, we know what you mean. It kinda felt like that at first for us (well, maybe not THAT bad...), but we did find that once we wore them around a bit, we kind of got used to it as we broke the shoes in. That said, not all shoes are right for all feet!
yeah I tried before the merrell trail glove the first generation since im a runner, but its a little uncomfortable shoes, they think that it will make your feet feel like natural but its not, its not natural to have support in your arch
Great, review! How does the arch support compare with the Trail Glove 5? The Trail Glove 4 was my favourite shoe with no arch support. I got used to the arch support in the Trail glove 5, but now I am wondering about the Trail Glove 6, and whether it is even more than the 5. Thanks!
It's even *more* pronounced in the 6 than it was in the 5. Unfortunately the 4 was the last one that was any good as far as barefoot feel and benefits are concerned. They are a decent transitional shoe for someone wanting to do so, but they are *not* NOT like the Trail Glove DNA of the past. The are also narrower, with a rather rigid midsole and heel - which feels weird because the toe box, though narrower, is still quite flexible. But that arch, like they mention here, is AGGRESSIVELY awful -- to me it felt like standing on a broomstick.
These are the last pair of merells I'm going to buy. This doesn't qualify as a barefoot shoe at all - stiff sole, narrow toe box, and super high arch. I'm going to have to switch to a company that actually knows how to make a barefoot shoe.
I like barefoot shoes. Even considering I live in NYC. I remember I used to wear my water shoes every summer just to get adjusted wearing with them. I have a Altra Lone Peak 4.5 which are my only trainers considering its a minimalist shoes I have. Any keywords or suggestion as to taking care of my own calves here? Great video by the way.
And the toe box on this version 6 is narrow. So very noticeably narrow especially compared to their prior version 4, the best of the entire Merrell Trail Glove series. The TG4 has been the go-to minimal trail shoe for me and so many others
Do these fit exactly like TG4? Its annoying when companies suggest to go half size down. Well, they don't make half size down from 15us! Really freaking annoying. MTG4 size 15us was too big, and size 14us was too small!
Great Q! I personally prefer Xero shoes, but I like a true barefoot/minimalist feel. If you prefer some arch support and a snugger fit, then you might like the Merrell better!
@@espacesX thats what i was actually asking not stating ... im new to trekking on foot in the back country for distance hikes... i grew up in colorado and all ive used are not so lite hiking boots but want a better lighter type of hiking shoe that gives good traction in wet or sandy trails

The previous model, Trail Glove 5, has that horrible arch plate as well. It completely ruins the shoe.

Totally agree
Replying to boost this to hopefully get more attention from Merrell and correct this mistake

My first barefoot shoe I've ever bought picked some up today for $45 clearance 🙃 love a wide toe box since I started wearing crocs
Trail Glove 2 was the last trail glove without an arch. TR 5 had a very high arch these look the same. I keep trying to find TR 2 in used sites.

yeah weird arch 'support'. you get used to it though. i use this in rotation with proper barefoot style and midsole style
How does it compare to the previous Trail Glove arch plate? I couldn't wear those it felt like a rock digging into my arch.
I love aggressive arch support...I have a relatively high arch and need/want that secure support.
That’s because you keep wearing shoes that support that arc…
If you never wore shoes ever, you wouldn’t have that much of an arc or at all
Omg I think I bought these from you today brand new! Lol can’t wait to try them ☺️
Lol. We ended up with a few extra pairs! Hope you're enjoying them!
was the shoes nice???
Not a barefoot shoe, no matter what their marketing says.

Its not barefoot with arch support
They got rid of the wide toe box... It's a horrible shoe!
Thanks for the video
Yup. It’s pretty claustrophobic. You bet!
Think I'll pass, thanks. I want a shoe where I can't feel anything. I run only on gravel roads.
How about water crossings. Do they drain water and dry out well? How's the grip on slick rock?
The minimalist design helps with drying out. The mesh offers decent drainage. Haven't had issues with rock (like on creek crossings).

Vivobarefoot Magna Trail
Correct! The Magna Trail. We also reviewed it and love it.

The merrell trail glove 6 or xero hfs 🤔🤔

Ridonkulous arches are why im kimda stuck wearing merrels, i have absurdly high arches
Not good for all terrain hiking
What's good then? E.g. ...
I would rate the Outsole as ATR. ATR is "Street to Trail", which usually does not incl. muddy conditions.
