Great movie that delivers a sad message about the hopelessness of the parole system of the 1930s. Now, almost 100 years later, little has changed about the US prison system and parole. It seems once in the system, they never want you to get out. Best to stay out of the system to begin with.

Barton MacLane was a very durable actor. He almost always played the bad guy.

Interesting/informative/entertaining. Enjoy viewing the fishing boat/steam locomotive train/inmate uniforms of that era.

"Red" is played by a very young Ward Bond, before he became John Wayne's favorite supporting actor.

Good story line with unexpected plot twists. Usually known for playing gruff, irascible characters Barton McLane shows greater range in his portrayal of Jaquine. He actually did well in playing this lovable character. Who knows where his career would have taken him if he had a chance to play a greater variety of rolls? To show how many people looked at Barton as someone who just plays rough characters a young boy who was being berated by an adult asked that older person "Who do you think you are? Barton McLane?"

Barton McLane was great in the Torchy Blaine series with Glenda Farrell, and on I dream of Jeannie as a general unfortunately he died during the series. Ward Bond 👎 never impressed me.

Is there a reason for those hats, the prisoners are wearing? This is suppose to be San Quentin? Funny, I know (know of) someone who just went to San Quentin, like about 6 weeks ago, to sing and perform for the prisoners. They made her dress up like a nun (out in civilian clothes). Don't think much has changed there in ..... 80 years!!! Wonder if there is still anyone locked up there from 1938? Ha Ha Ha!! One time I tried to research who has served the longest amount of time in prison. I forget what I found out. I think it was something like 65 or 68 years.

@Alverthorpe I may have mistyped something. I was saying this woman singer went to San Quentin to do a show for the inmates. Prison officials made her dress all "toned down" and covered up so as not to be enticing to the inmates. She usually dresses quite revealing. That's the point I was making. That nothing has changed at San Quentin.
