Hello from the Pittsburgh Industrial Railroad!
Roger, The Gateman is a great accessory! My 6 year old daughter has one on her layout, and she thinks its the funniest thing! Thanks!!

Very nicely done, Roger, and a very touching finale regarding that particular Automatic Gateman accessory.
Keep these wonderfully educational and fun lessons coming!

I found a working original gateman and added to my display layout, but activated by a button, not the track. When displaying at a local train show last month, the kids and parents were so amazed that pushing an orange button made the gateman appear. Even in this age of tech/phones/gaming/etc, that nearly 70 year old little gateman practically stole the show...

The original had the crossbuck facing in the correct direction , while all others after the original have it facing forward.
Great accessory though ! That and the milkcar. The boxcar roof walker / telltale accessory is a great one too.

Yes Yes Yes • The gateman in the best accessory from Lionel and I would place the Milk Can Car as number two. Cheers from Michigan.

Pleased to see this new video series and look forward to more installments.
When originally produced, the Gateman was supplied with a section of insulated outside rail straight track. It was available in both O gauge and Standard gauge. THe only difference between the two was the section of track. This was one of the earlier items that used the insulated rail method of activation. The weight controlled contactor came later, but the insulated rail is the better method for reliable operation.
Can't wait to see more in this series.
    Best,
    Bill Schmeelk

One of my favorite bits of trivia about the gateman is that the Soviet Union copied it for use with train sets made during the 50's and 60's. "Comrade Gateman" is virtually identical aside from colors and the little man's uniform.
