I'd say this is one of the best episodes in anime history. I'm so grateful to Togashi to make me experience something like this and to the anime producers for making such an amazing job on the adaptation.
All the symbolism with Gungi for their relationship is so perfect. Meruem being Marshal in parallel to his role for his species, and Komugi being the Spy for being inside the enemy's territory without being considered as a threat by them, but yet she is the piece used to "checkmate" enemy's Marshal. Each one is on one side of the board, yet still they can be a positive thing to one another. Komugi finally had met someone who actually values her like the way she truly deserves. Meruem finally has reached the last thing missing for his completely humanization, getting away from ants objectives and persuing something good and special for only himself, not for his colony or species. And Komugi making that possible for him. And both are the light that iluminates one another's life, being the reason for them to resignify the meaning of the other's life. Simply beautiful. And Pouf... poor him, he was destined to fail due to his idealization on another person. Unfortunately (or fortunately for all of us xD) there is no way Meruem could reach all Pouf's expectations, not only because his ideals were very unflexible but also cause Meruem has other perspective in life. All he wanted for his King was success, and all he wanted for himself was something to live for. But he never got a chance...
I'm so happy that people praise the writing of Pouf ! For me he is clearly the best of the three royals guards. His ideals, his power, his mental state, his relation with the humans ; meruem ; Yupi and Pitou... Everything about him is just on another level... We hate and love him, because we understands his perspective even so we know that he is following the wrong path... If we add the writing of Meruem ; Komugi ; Gon ; Netero ; Palm ; Knuckle ; Knov ; Ikalgo etc so MANY EXCELLENT CHARACTERS ! This show is on another level ! I hope that they will continue with the manga because it's also peak !!
I’ve watched HXH four times, and this anime never fails to amaze me to learn new symbolism behind its canonical narrative. Togashi is indeed one of the greatest writers of our time.
Fun fact, when she hold the hand of meruem in the last minute of his life, she understand that meruem wasn't human... and even there, she didn't reject him... What a show, what a storytelling...
the fact that Netero died like an ant, sacrificing himself for his colony of humans. And Meruem died like a human, spending his final moments with the one he most loved.
Netero just decided to pull an atomic bomb out of his ass (Well technically his chest, but you get the picture) as a desperate last attempt to win. The old dude was an absolute demon, I felt worse for Meruem than him😂
Some added details thats clear in the manga is SPY+MARSHAL in Japanese text when combined means LOVE. Also on the topic when Komugi asked 'allow me to join you" pretty much is equivalent to a marriage "I do" in Japanese and they accepted each other as a couple that moment
I still think Pouf got one of the worst, if not _the_ worst, death in the series. He was defeated so utterly. All his ideals, everything he stood for, fought for, every plan foiled, everything ended in failure. Then moments before his death he learns that his ideal king no longer exists and Meruem has become fully human, yet will die soon anyway, as will he. And then he dies alone, like a poisoned little bug in the middle of the street, utterly crushed, with no hope, no future, only despair.
I feel like the short scene showing his corps, the cape getting torn away by wind, is one of the most underrated scenes of this arc, if not the show. It's understandable, since it's a part of *this* episode, but I just can't describe how GOOD that scene is to me, what a perfect, awful death. He's a character that many hate, and of course I wanted him to die when I first watched the show as well... but just that scene made me feel nothing but pity.
@@DemPop yep, he is reduced to a pitiful state, the powerful and mighty royal guard Pouf. I love him as a character. He's such a beautiful depiction of the two sided madness of zealotry and devotion/loyalty, all clashing inside. He's actually the most interesting of the royal guards, because he's far more human than youpi and pitou. None of the royal guards have memories of their previous lives, but Pitou was definitely human before and not produced from magical beasts like youpi. In the end, he served not the king, but his own selfish desires the most. He served his imaginary ideal inside his head of what the king should be, which in the end is just his delusional ego's desire for a perfect king. In a poetic sense you could say that the delusional pouf was brought down by reality itself, something that tends to happens with illusions.
@@DemPop I like the detail that he has a trail of blood behind him. The fact that he dragged himself for a bit before dying in such a pathetic state...is dark.
The order of most undignified death to least goes like this imo: 1. Pouf (unlike with Youpi, the king didn't even know or care about his death when it happened, I mean he knew they would all die but he really didn't give him a second thought after he remembered Komugi) 2. Youpi (only Welfin saw him die like a little bug because of the Miniature Rose, but at least the king got angry about his death at Welfin) 3. Pitou (at least she got to go out with a bang, literally - and she was content to give up her life if it means that Gon would focus all his rage on her and not go after Meruem as well, so she got peace of mind as well) 4. Meruem (for obvious reasons, he got to go out on his own terms with the person he respected/loved most)
Togashi's master move was to make this Nen monster Meruem killed by a Nenless weapon. During all the Journey, there was a massive gap between what has and what hasnt Nen, that was totally unexpected
Togashi did that from the beginning. the idea of what is " power" was experimented on from the start of the manga. Gon won over Hanzo is another first big example. who's strong and who's weak, it's never clear. there's no line in the sands. what is " strong" and "weak" in HxH is what is strong and weak in life. the definition of power depends on each circumstance, it's always slippery, obscured, abstract, and delicate. it's got nothing to do with power, in all shape and form.
Even if it's dark it's the first time Komugo "sees" Merueme because it's the first time she touches him and as she is blind it's her way of seeing people
Damn I teared up again, idk how to explain the emotions that come from that final scene between Meruem and Komugi. It's probably the fact that by the time Meruem found his humanity there was already a countdown on his life, and in that short time he had left as a human he found his happiness somewhat.
Copy pasted comment Moves they play in Gungi signifies more in-depth meaning, read this if you want to cry more: Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that extent. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side.. The black screen/black panels in the manga show that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding"). Touching, isn't it? Togashi is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a masterpiece, a beautiful work of art, a canvas depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding.
I cannot watch this without tearing up. Something about Komugi crying because she is booming with happiness. And later seeing Meruem so vulnerable and scared, looking for reassurance in a blind girl because he himself is blind. That's where my heart breaks... Before that we are looking at thos photon-like En particles floating around are acting like his eyes because he cannot see. So they are touching the surfaces of whenever they land and he can feel it. He either cannot longer feel because his aura is just residual and he is too weak to expect anything from Nen, or his brain is shutting down fast so he cannot process the information. Either way it's heartbreaking. The King depending on a little blind girl at his last moments. It's also a fact that Komugi says something in Japanese that is like a traditional speech formula in Japan for woman to accept a marriage proposal, right after Meruem reveals the truth about his current condition. It's the part she says "I may not be much, but...". This is Togashi telling us that they got married. And then we see both Gungi pieces dancing together in the void. "Oyasuminasai, Meruem" and Komugi is holding his hand, his head in her lap... I cannot.. Jesus this arc is perfect. And this end is so damn sad. Shortest happiness and love experienced by two lovers (platonic or romantic, it doesn't matter) and taken away so quickly by the tragedy of life. Togashi, MadHouse I'm so grateful for this gift. ... Next comes the epilogue where I also tear up a little in a certain moment.
The reason the screen went black little by little till it was black is bcuz the King lost his sight bcuz of the poison and that's way he kept asking "Komugi, are you still here?" he was no longer able to see her... that final match was completely in their heads
An arc that sets up so much expectation, starts so many plot threads and just goes in so many hectic directions as this one - to stick the landing this perfectly. I've already considered it a 10/10, but this conclusion was what made me decide that this is my favorite anime arc, and HxH is my favorite anime. Also I can't watch this shit without *at least* tearing up.
Now read this without the "death" still true Now read this without the "death" and "agonist" still true! Now read this without the "death" and "agonist" and "ant" and it's still true !!😂
I always liked when Meruem starts asking if komugi is still there, because at this point the poison had blinded the king. He was finally able to see the world in the same way as Komugi.
Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that focuses on isolating the King (the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it, just as Netero and the Hunters were planning to do with Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a technique to counterattack it in the middle of a game, which means that the King's piece (representing Meruem) would no longer have to die (since it unexpectedly survived the nuclear bomb). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she develops a "counter attack to the counter attack" ("That move... It actually found a way out!"), representing the King's piece (Meruem), which apparently has to die in the end (because of Rose's poison). However, immediately after defeating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem begin an endgame together, a game they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that effect. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving Meruem's only black piece and Komugi's only white piece on the board, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two have always been united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece on the ground, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die by his side... The expression "Maybe I'm not worthy, but allow me to go with you" is an old Japanese idiom that Japanese women used to use to accept marriages, but since in their case it wasn't really a marriage, it shows their desire to have an intimate connection by wanting to die holding his hand. The black screen/black panels in the manga show that Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can no longer see her. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines on everyone". He even obtained some photon powers related to God's light before his death, allowing him to fulfill the purpose of his name. What's more, as they play in the bunker before his death, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses her reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being much weaker (and blind to life), her light shone much brighter than his. So, when he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing him to finally "see" or know what his face looks like. So when they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness, while she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has always seen, and knows what it's like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows her face, allowing each to better understand the other as they disappear (the soundtrack used during their death scene is called "Understanding").
The king is born as the ultimate monster. Learns about the better side of humanity from a human. Faces the most inhumane side of humanity, the Bomb. Then, finally, dies as a person, a human, in the arms of the one who taught him how to be one. *The more times I watch it, the more it cements my belief that this is the most incredibly written character arc I've ever seen.* PS.: I'm here tearing up as well as I write 🥲
15:30 ''Ok, we just finished... huf man, adapting this part was tedious, i think we do fine, really good, people will cry to this'' ''Yeah, we just need to add the post-credit next episode thinguie and...'' ''Wait, wait, wait!... you can't do that!, it would ruin the whole mood, haven't you seen the episode we just make?'' ''Oh... yeah you right... but we always do that
The parallel story of Meruem and Gon. One lost his humanity in his quest for revenge while the other gained it when he realized what was truly important to him.
I still think they could have done a better job at the episode direction because of that outro and that happy adventurous music right at the end. It would have been powerful to let that scene just sit there. Put credits over the visuals but just stay in the moment. But great episode nonetheless. What an arc for Meruem. Now excuse me while I listen to Kaze no Uta and contemplate. I still look at that as the best HxH song (I just like the music in the 1999 adaptation overall).
wtf dude. I watched this like seven years ago and remember only bits and pieces of the arc. I clicked expecting not to cry. Guess what, I cried. Fking immediately.
You will Summertime Render. It is a complete adaptation (except a few pages), 25 episodes of fantastic story, thrill, mystery, voice acting, animation and writing.
15:33 I love seeing people getting slapped in the face by the outro in this episode. After such a sad and emotional piece, comes the happiest song ever
S+ Tier writing is introducing a mostly cliche villain that literally murders a family including a child right at the start and then 44 episodes later has everyone crying over his death.
Damn, if Meruem was cured of his poison he could have lived the rest of his life living like a normal human just playing games with Komugi. And he could have been a very powerful ally of humanity that came from a certain continent, alongside Killua's sister.
I was ready to be tearing up watching this again, but nope, i literally cried like a bitch, my god the pain this episode brings man I'm sure glad that i waited when i was alone to watch it
Who the fuck mistranslated Komugi's response after Meruem said "Thank you" / ありがとう (arigatou) to her? She didn't really say "You're welcome." She said something along the lines of "likewise" - こちらこそ (kochirakoso) . Basically an acknowledgment and thanking at the same time. Anyway, the death of Meruem is one of my favorite HxH moments. Beautiful, tragic and poignant.
Hands down best episode of the series.

I have to disagree. Episode 145 takes the cake for me. Kullua and Nanika's relationship stills the series for me. Hope its not a spoiler

This has to be my favourite moment in this journey called Hunter X Hunter. It's impossible not to cry.
This is one of the only (if not the only) episodes in all of media that can make me cry every single time without fail
Togashi is such a legend. 😭
Perfect ending to the arc.
*The more times I watch it, the more it cements my belief that this is the most incredibly written character arc I've ever seen.*
PS.: I'm here tearing up as well as I write 🥲
これを見るためにHUNTER×HUNTER見たと言っても過言じゃない
I love how Komugi calls him Meruem at the end instead of Meruem-sama even though she never lost a single match to him.
We are waiting for this 😂
Yes WE are
im glad i got to see yo reaction to this, so genuine! :'(
15:30 ''Ok, we just finished... huf man, adapting this part was tedious, i think we do fine, really good, people will cry to this''
''Yeah, we just need to add the post-credit next episode thinguie and...''
''Wait, wait, wait!... you can't do that!, it would ruin the whole mood, haven't you seen the episode we just make?''
''Oh... yeah you right... but we always do that
The way Komugi immediately smiled when she hears Meruem talking about the poison being contagious😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
The parallel story of Meruem and Gon. One lost his humanity in his quest for revenge while the other gained it when he realized what was truly important to him.
I didn’t realize this till later but I think the orbs in the end credits are Palms palms clairvoyance orbs
What an emotional ending ❤🎉
I still think they could have done a better job at the episode direction because of that outro and that happy adventurous music right at the end. It would have been powerful to let that scene just sit there. Put credits over the visuals but just stay in the moment. But great episode nonetheless. What an arc for Meruem.
Now excuse me while I listen to Kaze no Uta and contemplate. I still look at that as the best HxH song (I just like the music in the 1999 adaptation overall).
Man that hits me in the feels
That cheery "next episode" music never fails to piss everyone off after this episode!!!
メルエムは人間では無いと彼女は初めて知ったのに、彼女は彼の傍を離れなかった😢😢
3:33 This blew me away. Kneeling, that's all it is, but it has a very strong impact.
Damn, this episode never fails to make me cry. In the end, I loved Meruem and loved Komugi. I ended up wanting the King to live.
This was one of the only episodes of anime to make me cry.
Man that last moment really sets the moment 😅
最後の明るい音楽で吹いた
This is why I can wait however long for Togashi to return and continue the manga.
This momnet is one of the best from all animes, even with some bizarre visual ants like a wolf with lingeire but all that arc is epic.
YEP..this moment
Sad face lindsay looks so cute 😊
Honestly I would have been fine with the series ending on this episode. It was perfect
It was really sad and emotional
Thank god for the ending card cuz if it wasn't for it i would've been destroyed for months
here we go
待ってたで!!
I cane here becasuse I wanted to cry😢
I was ready to be tearing up watching this again, but nope, i literally cried like a bitch, my god the pain this episode brings man
I'm sure glad that i waited when i was alone to watch it
Fantastic end
noone expects to cry over a monster villean xD
Who the fuck mistranslated Komugi's response after Meruem said "Thank you" / ありがとう (arigatou) to her? She didn't really say "You're welcome." She said something along the lines of "likewise" - こちらこそ (kochirakoso) . Basically an acknowledgment and thanking at the same time.
Anyway, the death of Meruem is one of my favorite HxH moments. Beautiful, tragic and poignant.
I would recommend HUNTER x HUNTER to a friend because I want them to reach this episode.
However, my personal favorite is the next episode 🤱🐜😢
the next ep preview is just a killer this time lmfao
The last time she touched his face, she knew what Melhem looked like.🥲
First they poisoned him with love, then they poisoned him with a bomb.
oh look its raining again...
Best episode of hxh after Dark Continent Zushi. ❤
RIP Donatello 💔
hi guys from Italy
without komugi they would all have been destroyed
did you react to RE:ZERO Season 2 Part 2?
I’m here to tell you Carlson that you are one hell of an innocent cutie and i want you all to myself so beware lendsay
IM NOT REINA!!
I agree so much on that outro song being there that shit made me annoyed the first time i saw that ep
Cried again...
Lo tremebundo que es este capitulo
I recommend ''Alice In Borderland'' as next show
she gotta be one of the most beautiful girl ive ever seen
that's what i was thinking
peak x peak
nuclear explosion and radiation killed them all
Kamugi died from background radiation that came from the king, right?
Yes.
Después de hunter definitivo bleach
The king became a human and Gon became a Monster
netero too
マジな話、人類史上最悪の次回予告だと思う。
Sorry this might be a very stupid question as I'm a new viewer, but are you guys siblings or partners...?
