The .338 win is a great all round cartridge for deer,elk,moose,black bear and grizzly especially if you're a hand loader. In the 22 years I guided hunters I've had more guys show up with the .338 win mag than any other caliber.

.338Win mag. Very versatile. Can be easily loaded to .338/06 levels or ramped up to full. It’s my fourth largest rifle.

Flinching is all about timing.
The hunting cartridge of the two, the 300 Winchester Magnum over the 338 Winchester Magnum. A diary left by hunting guide for grizzly bear/ brown. The 300 Winchester Magnum did better in stopping a brown equally effective, the 375 HH Magnum. Additional: The story titled “Lessons From 85 Dead Brown Bears by Layne Simpson. One-Shot Kills .30 magnums 25%, 338/340 magnums 17%, 375 H&H 25%. Cartridge Efficiency: backup .30 magnums 35% (average shots 3.75), .338/.340 66% (average 3.44; combined average), .375 H&H 38% (average 3.44; combined average). This amazing story was published in April 2002 ‘American Hunter’ NRA publication. Here's what it says on page 41, “Sixty-five percent needed no backup shots when taking their bears compared to a much lower 34 percent for hunters who used the .338 and .340 magnums. On the hand, with a 62-percent average, hunters armed with .375-caliber rifles virtually matched the records of those who used .30-calibers. I kept this all these years since I live in Alaska. My first hunting rifle Remington 700 Classic chambered in 300 Weatherby Magnum 24” barrel; sold later after buying a Weatherby Mark V SS 300 Weatherby 26” barrel. Deadly accurate and very powerful. An American Bison felt the power! One-shot One Kill in the neck.

Well now that was a interesting video and my thoughts of the 338 win mag is too much gun. I personally just don't need that much mojo because I don't hunt any dangerous animals or anything that big mostly just whitetail but it is nice and it will get the job done.

Anytime you have a large caliber and a plastic stock it’s got a punch. I had a MOSSBERG 500 12 gauge with a plastic stock- was skeet for shooting, by the end of the day I had a bruise on my cheek and I was flinching because the light stock made it feel like it had more recoil.

When did the .338Win stop being mainstream?
I have a Winchester Model 70 in the .338 Win Mag. Great Elk Gun (maybe elephant too). Boy does it reach out there. Kicks like a mule and takes a few rounds to get comfortable with the anticipation of the kick. Sighted in (Nikon Monarch) @ 200 yards, slightly over 2.25 inch grouping. Min wind. Someone steadier could do better I am sure. I love it.

Its actually a three position safety. All the the way back locks the bolt and the second position allows the bolt to be operated but wont let the trigger go off

That’s a great deal WTW! I can’t believe you got it that cheap. Those rounds are a beast man. I shot one a few years ago and I swear, I dont think it kicks any more than a .300 win mag, myself. I have a 338 win mag in the Howa which is a sister company to the weatherby both have same bolt styles . It's a bit heavy but when your poor like me you have to figure it out. Thanks for any info about the 338. It is a power horse. Just needs help being accurate with the heavy recoil. But for a brush gun out to 300 yards it will put the smack down.

Pull the safety lever back one notch (half-way between full safe and fire) and the firing pin is locked and cannot fire, and you can open the bolt safely to unload, or load, the rifle.

The ammunition manufacturers should hand these out for free due to the price off ammo. Not to worry about the cost of ammo as you can not spend more than your monthly allowance as there will not be enough on the shelf to do so

You can open the bolt when it’s on Safe you have to put it in position 2(in the middle) it’s a 3 position safety

Many moons ago, I had a pair of Ruger 77 MkIIs, one in 300 Win Mag, and one in 338 Win Mag. They weighed within two ounces of one another, and the stocks were identical. With 180 grain bullets in the .300 and 220 grain bullets in the .338 (pretty standard weights for those cartridges), I found the recoil of the smaller bore to be sharper and more painful.

i just took out my 338 win. in the out dated A Bolt for the first time . old but new to me. just put on a new vortex 6x24x50 and did a quick site in just to get it going at 75 yards . had it in in 6 shots . wow !!
cant wait to get to the range . was my first shots in the 338 win . and was not to bad . about like the 444 but not as hard as the 45 - 70.
I have the 300 Win mag and a 300 Weatherby mag. both rounds slam whitetails to the ground with a fist sized hole when bullet hits a neck bone or the skull. Come to think of it my 257 Roberts does it too!

Stars and Bars! Right on. Nothing relieves stress like going to the rifle range and feeling the recoil of your favorite rifle. Stress is coming home from the gun shop and working up the courage to tell your wife you bought another rifle. I figure my rifle costs to be double. A $1000 rifle equals a $1000 shopping trip for the better half.

I didn't read all the comments, but if someone else hasn't already mentioned it, the Compass has a 3 position safety. The middle position is on safe and the bolt is unlocked. It's the same type of safety that I believe was originally pioneered by the Win M70 rifles.

One of my hunting buddies years ago bought a Winchester mod 70 tricked out awesome rifle he developed a Flench from the recoil missed several big bucks until I talked him into getting a ruger m77 in 7 x 57 he was happier put me to shame.

My Grandpa recently passed and but before hand I was able to put a couple rounds through his Mossberg 4×4. The only other bolt action I've shot was a Savage .22lr a hour earlier 😆

Tried to buy the campus 2 couldn't find on. Still got a 338wm but it's a savage110 bear hunter and you are Wright about the price diff. 980 from Kentucky Gun Club. Love the gun. Can take a hog a grizzly an elk or moose or just the good old whitetail.
Picked up a TC Compass 2 in .308 recently from Academy under $300 plus $50 mail in rebate, I was pretty happy to say the least and pleasantly surprised at the quality of the rifle and the great trigger.

I came very close to buying a. 338 Win Mag. But the ammo was hard to come by. Also read that the. 300 Win Mag pretty much replaced it.

One big caliber. I pulled out an old Mod 60 22 rimfire I've had since I was knee high to a grass hopper, looked it up online and found a Mod 45 for sale with a long magazine. Man they wanted 800 bills for that. Hooooey! And you paid a 1/4 for that 243? Good deal man. Looking forward to the grouping vid.
I got the same gun and I'm guessing from the same place. Mine came with the vortex crossfire scope. Really was a good deal.

I got a Thomas Center TCR22. It's a clone of the Ruger 10/22 and I love that little rifle. I put a 18.5" carbon fiber barrel on it and it's a tack driver.

Since it has a threaded muzzle i'd get a brake for it to tame that recoil a bit so you can get some good tight groups

I have a 338 win mag in a savage and it doesn't kick that bad I use it in michigan I just bought a compass 2 in 308 with a 4-12 scope for $415 and they have a $50 rebate through the end of the month
