  • The Zoo Atlanta family is saddened by the passing of Ivan the western lowland gorilla, 50 years old and a cherished member of our collection since 1994.
Every life at the Zoo is a story worth sharing, but his story was once told so widely and passionately that it ignited a national movement that touched two coasts. From the jungles of Africa to the shores of the Pacific Northwest to The Ford African Rain Forest at Zoo Atlanta, his life has been a symbol of the way animals shape our lives -- and the power we have to shape theirs.
Ivan's story is one of Zoo Atlanta's most memorable happy endings. Born in Africa in 1962, he was captured as an infant and sold to the owners of a department store in Tacoma, Wash., where he lived for nearly three decades in a solitary indoor enclosure. By the mid 1990s, the silverback's living conditions had inspired a highly-publicized movement for his relocation, prompting Ivan's owners to donate their celebrity tenant to Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo. Leadership in the care and study of western lowland gorillas were already trademarks for Zoo Atlanta, with the world-class Ford African Rain Forest having opened to national acclaim just six years earlier. Recognizing the importance of giving Ivan the opportunity to become a social gorilla and with the recommendation of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), Woodland Park Zoo placed Ivan on permanent loan to Zoo Atlanta in October 1994.
Despite numerous opportunities to share his habitat with female companions, Ivan has never followed in the footsteps of his prolific fellow founders, having sired no offspring to date. Although he has now been part of the Zoo Atlanta family for more than 15 years, his friends and fans in the Pacific Northwest have never forgotten; of our more than 1,500 residents, Ivan is the most asked-about animal on the Zoo's Facebook profile.

Ivan and I were the same age. I remember seeing him many times at the B&I store in Tacoma WA. I'm happy that Atlanta took such good care of him for the 2nd half of his life. It just wasn't right for B&I to house him the way they did. It looked like a prison cell. It was easy to see that he was bored and unhappy. Ivan is a success story. RIP Ivan!

Not sure if anyone will see this comment, but I think it’s a cool memory to share. The elementary schools in Atlanta used to take kids to the zoo a lot in the 90s. It was an annual field trip. I’m not sure if they still do it but it was always a great experience. Shitty sack lunch. Anyways, I had a cool isolated moment observing Ivan. Everyone was crowding the window area to see Willie B and all the younger gorillas. Somehow I stepped aside to an outdoor area and saw Ivan by himself. Thinking. I swear he looked at me and I just have him the smallest wave. I feel like we had the briefest moment of understanding each other as introverts. He was in his life staring off wondering as was I. Cool moment.

I remember going to see Ivan at the B&I in Tacoma Washington as well and it was disheartening to see him living in such drab conditions. I was so so happy to learn that he had been donated to Woodland Park Zoo and would no longer be living at the B&I as it had truly been a terrible place for any animal to stay, even the pets. I am so sorry for his loss, however I am completely delighted in the fact that he at least got to live out the remainder of his years in peace and tranquility. Thanks ZA!

VzGamer You forgot one other essential item: enrichment. Enrichment provides the animal with physical and mental stimulation. It can really be anything though AZA accredited zoos often make sure that the enrichment allows the animal to mimic what they would do in the wild. For gorillas, enrichment would include: toys and items that can withstand their strength like plastic barrels and boxes, hiding food around the enclosure so they can forage for it, and even ice treats on hot days

I feel guilty ever knowing Ivan. I used to go see him at the B&I, mostly to try and give him eye contact with some sort of "I'm sorry you're here" look. Not realizing my pure existence of being there is pretty much what kept him there. He at least had emotion on his face while at the B&I, in this clip I only saw emptiness. Maybe he missed his trainer or the children that came to see him everyday. Maybe the constant annoyance of banging glass or his surprise hits on the window that would send people running. Maybe he missed all the daily routine of him being waken and admired by the hoards of people that came to see him.. IDK, Not sure why, but he just didn't look as healthy and as beautiful as I remember. Yes, he is gone now, but I am glad he was able to live out his life as a Gorilla should in an open environment, with grass under his feet! I miss you, Sorry

Livia in HI yes, as I watched this again, I was not thinking how big his surroundings were compared to him. He was so large in my eyes, King Kong was modeled after Ivan. Now watching him in his wide open free roam lets me see the truth of what captivity has done to him. His thin unmuscular limbs from lack of everything known to make him the true beast he was really supposed to be. That look of emptiness that I thought I saw wasn't emptiness at all. Honestly I have no words for what it was...I'm teared up again thinking of how such a beautiful beast endured so much.
I rallied outside o the sidewalks of the B&I the moment I knew they were protesting to get him out. I didn't go to see his goodbye, But I watched on TV when he took his first steps outside.
I'm glad you got to see him. I hope he was a beautiful to you as he will always be to me.

good bless zoo atlanta for giveing ivan a good life that he did not get in tacoma at that hole in the wall b&i he was never happy and it was just wrong to do ivan like that for all those years,in this video he looks like a true king of the jungle that he was, ivan came through so much his mother and father were murderd then he was kidnapped and put on display in a concrete cell with bars and glass, this brings tears to my eyes that he left this world happy and free,we love and miss you big guy.

Ivan’s life became much better when he was given to Zoo Atlanta. They gave him the life he should’ve had. AZA accredited zoos take animal welfare very seriously.

As a military brat stationed in Ft. Lewis WA, I remember my mom taking me to see Ivan in the early 70’s. I was only about 5 or 6 years old, but I remember looking at him with such sadness. The next thing I knew, a tire hit the window and I was screaming. Fast forward to 2019 pr 2020, I’m sitting at home with my granddaughter and she wants to watch “The One and Only Ivan” on Netflix. So we watch the entire movie, and I tell her about seeing the gorilla as a child. At the end of the movie, they start talking about the REAL story and it hit me like a brick wall. I was bawling like a baby and my granddaughter asked what was wrong. I had to tell her that the story that I told her about seeing the gorilla behind the glass, was the real Ivan. I never knew what happened to him, I had forgotten all about it until going to the Detroit zoo with her a year or two before watching the movie…. I’m so glad that he had some semblance of a normal life in the end…
