      TS9. Kinda disappointed by the OD-3; it sounds thin and messy!

  • @xReisendenx
    @xReisendenx 4 года назад +54

    Hey guys, Just FYI. The OD-3 is not a tube screamer. It's a discrete based circuit more similar to a blues driver in layout (two discrete pampas stacking for gain versus the tubescreamers single stage.
    A better selection from boss would have been the SD-1. The OD-3 is soft clipping symmetrical, whilst the SD-1 and the tube screamer is asymmetrical. Otherwise good video.

      @WeAsACompany  4 года назад +14

      Hi man, thx for your comment. We know, we had a lot of comments about the fact that the OD3 is not the same circuit as the Tube Screamer. We choose the OD3 based on a JHS video where Josh Scott says that the OD3 is, somehow, based on the SD-1. That was probably our misinterpretation of Josh's words. However, we think is interesting to compare the OD3 to a classic Tube screamer circuit since the OD3 is kind of an "evolution" of the Sd-1. Maybe a comparison between OD3 and SD1 would be more appropriate for that purpose.

      Strictly speaking, the only TS here is the TS! But many people will equate TS to any overdrive so the review is still good IMHO.

      @@xRepoUKx I'm honestly not sure about the bad monkey, and I know the od3 is not because I have one myself, but the plumes absolutely is a tube screamer circuit. It is EarthQuaker devices offering for a tube screamer circuit type pedal. But in my opinion it's a big improvement over an original ts9 or 808 because the switching provides loads more tonal options. If I remember correctly the pots on the plumes are also different in that they utilize a much broader sweep, so you end up with more tweakability. I'm not big on tube screamers which is why I own an od3, but if I were going to get a tube screamer type pedal it would either be the plumes or the JHS bonsai. The plumes you can't beat, because it's only 90 bucks. A bonsai and even a genuine ts9 are both more expensive than the plumes, but the bonsai has a mode switch which essentially makes it nine different tube screamers circuits in one pedal. I play a Les Paul through Peaveys and Marshalls though, so mid hump overdrives are unnecessary. Even when I play my Stratocaster through my supersonic 60 I don't want a tube screamer there either. The od3 is where it's at. It has a voice of its own and does its whole own thing, and I love it. When somebody says the word overdrive I think of my little yellow box not a green one 🤘😁

    I have the Plumes, and after threatening to sell it (it sits around a lot simply because i use a different OD on my bass board) I feel a lot more inspired to use it. The amount of low end it retains is remarkable, even more so than the Green Russian.
    People complain that it sucks low end, but they don't seem to get that they can't just crank the tone and expect the low end to come through as much as all the higher harmonics... I perceive almost no loss of lows between tone and min and tone at 12, a perfectly usable range for bass imo.

    I’m an Ibanez guy since the beginning born in 72’ living thru the 80’s had many guitars starting with American Tele, then to Gibson Les Paul Special, then in late 80’s picked up my Ibanez RG 570 and never looked back. I sold the rest and bought more RG’s for my style of playing and Love of Hard Rock sound. On to pedal ; I downsized once my child was born and being from Ms. I picked up Peavey 6505 Piranha micro 20 watt head w/ 6505 1x8” cab for my small man cave and it has exact metal sound I was looking for. I’ve had fender, orange terror, and many Peavey amps but looking for mid/ range, low end boost for my 8” driver in cab. I borrowed the Boss DS-1, Ibanez TS-9, and DigiTech Bad Monkey overdrive pedals. I chose the BM for it gave me the EQ & mid/low boost I needed for smaller cab and absolutely Love it. I know this is long but wanted to describe what I was looking for and why for anyone else. Usual post tell you about pedal but never what equipment they are using. Hope this will help someone starting out with pedal questions.#DigiTech#BadMonkey#Ibanez#RG❤️#Peavey❤️

    I chose the Bad Monkey a long time ago. It had more tonal nuances with the separate bass & tone control and an old EHX Linear Power Boost after the Monkey takes care of any gain issues or need to boost anything for a solo part. It also works well with bass guitar because of the separate bass control and less clipping.

    • @WeAsACompany
      @WeAsACompany  4 года назад +1

      Dad Monkey is great, with the two knobs you can shape the tone way better. However, the lows knob is very sensitive and you have to use it carefully.

    • @kirkbolas4985
      @kirkbolas4985 4 года назад

      We As A Company Fer sure bro. While the bass pot is, as you explained, touchy, that same pot has worked for me well, as-is, when I run my bass through it. It’s much more manageable and I reckon that has to do with interaction with the LRC network that is an electric bass’ electronics (passive). I don’t know the specific kind of impedance dynamics are at play.

    • @AleksP1987
      @AleksP1987 3 года назад

      Bad Monkey is one of the best drives for guitar but unfortunately it is almost unusable with bass because it shapes the lows for guitar by filtering LF below 100 HZ which are main frequencies for bass. But I know some bass players modding this pedal by changing the capacitor in the circuit to prevent cutting lows.

    I had the OD-3 in the past but I sold it. I still have my Bad Monkey because it's much more versatile. I usually set it like this: Level to 3-4, Low to 6-7, High to 8-9 and Gain to taste. That's when the pedal shines. Set like this it's no longer just a tubescreamer but even a very usable overdrive sound on a clean amp or close to breakup

    The Plumes has the most clarity of the four as a standalone pedal but also a lot more transparency. The Bad Monkey and TS9 sound similar, with the former having separate controls for the bass and treble frequencies. The OD-3, IMO, has the splinter-y treble of the Plumes with the muddy low mids of the TS9.

      And of course it’s not as versatile as the plumes… the OD-3 was designed in the 90’s. IMHO it’s supposed to sound like a late 70’s Plexi. I think it works really nice for home practice. I play it on a Marshall JCM 800 (1 Watt) and it sounds great. But in the rehearsal room or on stage the plumes shines.

    Having owned the Plumes for almost a year now, I've come to feel that its not actually a Tube Screamer, and that it more closely compares to the OD3 or the Blues Driver. Your comparison side by side comparison pretty much proves that, but at the point you A/B'd those two pedals you had the Plumes in Mode 1. It sounds much closer to the OD3 in Mode 3.

    Just picked up replacements for my DBM and SD-1. They sit alongside the Plumes and my $30 Centaur Clone (which sounds phenomenal for the price). These give me all the flavors of OD I have ever needed. I have a Big Muff Op Amp fuzz that I use in parallel with my other amp pathways, but tow with putting it up front every now and then. But it’s tight enough for a fuzz that it almost lends a Sunn Beta Lead element to my mix. Nice to hear a side by side comparison of all these variations on a theme. I do have to agree, though that the SD1 might have been a better Boss rep in this comparison. Great vid nonetheless.

      @@199theartist at the point I posted this, I was running the Tumnus cleanish into the Plumes with the gain around 2 o’clock and the toggle on mode 3. I can’t remember exactly where I had the Tumnus set, but it was set just high enough to take the amp from clean to edge of breakup. That setup gave me clean with both pedals off, light breakup with the Tumnus on (and Plumes off), a little more gain with the Plumes on (and Tumnus off), and as much gain as I would ever need with both on. I also keep my guitar volumes around 7 or 8 so there’s always a touch more gain there if I need it. Since this post, I’ve also tried a MojoHand Speakeasy (EP style boost) into the Plumes and got a similar result, but the Tumnus Deluxe had a more pleasant breakup for the first gain stage, while the boost was almost bland in comparison.
      This has been the most useful setup I’ve had on my board, but I’m currently using a Zvex 59 Sound chasing a very specific tone or I’d still be running the Tumnus into the Plumes over a year later.

The OD3 is not exactly a TS but belong to the same wide "family" since it is an evolution of the OD1. On top of that is a sleeper, and we think this pedal deserves more attention. I've owned the each of these except the OD-3, and the Paul Gilbert TC pedal also belongs in this conversation. Appreciate this review, but the Monkey was only shown at full gain, and that pedal's versatility for the $ is crazy. The gain level versatility is important for the Bad Monkey. Also LOVE the Plumes, but the Bad Monkey is my favorite because of it's flexibility and controls. I'd vote Bad Monkey and Plumes as almost a tie, then Paul Gilbert TC, and pass on the OD-3 and TS-9 comparatively. The OD-3 doesn't quite fit here. That said, Boss pedals are SO durable, and that matters. Digitech not so much... just the facts, ma'am.

    Would it be more accurate to say clipping distortion than saying gain?

      In guitar circles it's not unusual to use "gain" to mean clipping, because "gain" is the term most often used for the knob that controls most of the clipping in the circuit. I wouldn't say it was wrong of them to use it.

    • @jefferypallo1950
      @jefferypallo1950 3 года назад

      @@jdjk7 clipping occurs when the signal amplitude exceeds the voltage of the circuit it is flowing through. Gain is another term for volume. Volume can cause the circuit to clip but gain and clipping are not interchangeable. Specifically, in hifi or proaudio applications those terms are not interchangeable and it's necessary to differentiate the two.

    Also: The OD3 is not a tube screamer. The SD1 is closer to the screamer.

      Yes, we know, this is why sounds way better than others ;). We based the choice on the fact that Josh Scott says in a video that the OD3 was "based" on a Tube Screamer. Then we learned that the OD3 has a different circuit. Well, at least is a cool comparison.

    I am not interested in the bad monkey or TS9 at all. They don't sound as good. I owned a TS9 for years and always accepted it as the standard back then. I'm interested in the OD3 and the Plumes. I think that the Plumes sounds best on mode 2 and I disagree, I think it sounds more like the OD3 in that mode and colors the sound less than the two tube screamers. It's clearer like the OD3 but does have more mid-boost sure.

    I have all four of these pedals. Plumes is the one I like least, just can't find a sweet spot at any setting. I mostly play teles through Marshalls or Laneys.
    The best two for me are the Bad Monkey and the OD. If I can only carry one it's the Monkey, cuz it has more EQ control and has mixer out, in case the backline amp fails. I like pairing it with the OD or TS, using either of the latter as a booster.
