Love this pedal, apart from the fact I nearly lose my vision everytime I lean over to adjust the nobs due to the need for a fusion reactor to create a mini sun to signal I'm in distortion mode
Freaking eye damage! The only bad thing i can say about these incredible pedals. They should have connected the bypass light with the knob lights. I have 4 of these awesome pedals and I covered all them with tape. These young kids dont know the damage they are doing to their eyes staring at these LEDs. Us older guys eyes are really sensitive to these lights and smart enough to know these will cause permanent eye damage down the road.
I've had this pedal for a couple of months now and it's more and more my go to for so many differnt sounds. So much more than a distortion pedal. Stacking is amazing for cleaning up a tone and the blend does so much for dirty stuff. Can't say enough about this little golden sound machine.
I'm still diggin this pedal. I've decreased the OD on the right side and increased the OD and volume on the left. So, the left side knobs are both at 3, and the right side tone knob is 3 with the gain at 11. My blend knob favors the left at 10. Thanks for replying.
But the whole point is that the pedal is a blend of the two sides; there is no A or B "channel", just a balance between the two. Seems like there's plenty of options out there if you only want a dual channel kinda thing.
So far I like, the market is so saturated with OD and distortion pedals that you have to stick out above them all. Your pedal got my attention and held it there. The Fender name holds a ton of weight & persistence in its products, so therefor I have trust. Great demo of the Pedal and can't wait to try it out myself and use in my next sessions & gigs. Thank You in advance Fender, your more than a pretty trophy, your my family.
Hey there How does this Pugilist sound with the reverb? And does it add any noise to your signal? I have the marine layer as well as the bends comp and was thinking about adding this distortion to the mix. I’m hoping to replace my boss BD-2 with the Pugilist. Seems like it can do overdrive and distortion so one less pedal sounds good to me. Thanks for the feedback
@@brianrollins7275 I play on a strat and a tele, both with single coils only, so yes, If I crank up the gain on the pugulist, there is some decent hum, but even in this configuration I haven't got any nasty noise problems. Sounds great with the reverb. Marine Layer for me is that "always on" pedal and I tend to use it on higher levels - still great tones with distortion.
@@maciejzygmuntowski6748 Thanks for the reply. I don’t use a lot of high gain and I do use a boss n/s noise suppressor so I think I will give the pugilist a try. As long as it’s not a ridiculous amount of hum and noise it should work good for me. Not looking for heavy metal type gain, just enough for blues and rock. I love the marine layer reverb and the bends compressor so hopefully the pugilist will play nice with the rest of my setup. My marine layer is an always on pedal for me too. Thanks again for your feedback
I just got this pedal and I'm using it though a fender deluxe reverb. It's really good. I put everything at 12:00 and it sounded great! I like it better than my tube screamer or tumnus. Great rock tone and feels great. Try it!
So l tried this pedal today....it’s an interesting pedal. I think it works best in front of clean amp. I don’t think it’s particularly great at pushing a dirty amp. You can do the no gain and dime the level. But doesn’t add enough saturation or sizzle for my tastes and truly take you to high gain levels. Will give you solid rock tones. The second channel should have more distortion IMO. The one thing l did not like is the hard foot switch. Should have the silent soft switches that you find on some of the newer pedals. But other that this is a pretty good pedal for the money and considering it’s a fender product. You do not associate fender with distortion on any level. This pedal will surprise you in person.
I have it and modded it to a 2 switch pedal. Switch 1 one replaces the blend/series and the other is switching on/bypass. Pedal makes way more sense now!
I just got The Bends after having the Marine Layer Reverb for a while. Now I’m going to get this Pugilist. I already have a delay which I’ve had for a few months now. It’s the Boss DM-2W, I was into Boss and not looking at anything else until I came across these Fender pedals. I’m sure the Mirror Image is a fantastic delay pedal and I’m sure I’ll add it to collection sooner or later.
In series mode with all controls set at 12 o’clock…awesome pedal. And it does sound better with a battery. To my ears. The tone is more like a heavier overdrive than a distortion. Glad I bought it.
@@jasonlee8497 Exactly! I have it in front of my Blackstar Studio 10/6L6 with the reverb on 3 and its music to my ears! Plus the compugilist. I also have the marine layer in the effects loop. Desert island rig.
Was looking for this and it was sold out all over Tokyo. It's not even available in my home country... but by luck I saw it in a shop selling used stuff and got it at a bargain price. Really sick and fun pedal!
Prefer this to the Santa Ana which, despite the innovative features, sounded to me like just another hot-rodded tube screamer. I really like this distortion, and normally I don't like distortion pedals at all! I use a RAT and a Caroline Wave Cannon, but those are more like Fuzztortion/Overdrive+ pedals.
I love the RAT. It cannot be denied. No one ever talks about how great the sustain on the RAT is especially when mixed with a TS9 or 808. But I’m really digging these Fender pedals especially this one
Do you think it would do the same for a telecaster with 2 single coils? Can you get some overdrive and still retain some clarity on a or b side? Fattening sounds good to me but without getting muddy. I’m hoping I’ll get what I’m looking for from this pedal. Fingers crossed 🤞
I bought one of these a week ago. Love it but there should be v2 or deluxe that has switches for each channel so they can be switched on independent of each other or together in series or parallel . I'd gladly pay a premium for that option.
Good Vid, thanks !!! I bought 1 used thru ebay. I'm constantly changing my drive pedals, i've easily had 2 dozen that i've re-sold after a short time using them. Like in the video, this one gives more tonal control. I've got a Blues Jr and a Super Reverb. It works ok with both.
The pedal sounds awesome, and the two sides are great. The only thing this pedal is missing is a Expression pedal output so you can cycle through all the great sounds in between. Such a missed opportunity...
Good god anyone else think that Telecaster is pretty damn fine?? And pedal sound great too, single coil or humbuckers and all. I thought the Sta. Ana OD was the one I wanted, I was wrong...
As great as this pedal sounds, I think it would’ve been greatly improved by the addition of a second foot switch, to change from blend to series on the fly.
@TheJofrica - I own the pedal, and I would say yes to both, but the clean tone isn't quite the same as bypassing the pedal. You'll need to test it for yourself, obviously, but there are a bucketload of tone variations in this pedal.
Yeah, distortion is what makes electric guitar to another level. Like the notes separation and two different kinds of distortion in one box. You can make this same with two separete distortion boxes but not quite same ? Or can you ? Pugilist name is punch on your face or in this case distortion. Flexible box I think. Only one complaint why ever numbers on these ? Because you can make your best sounds and write them down.
Jason Maarsseveen well I play on a shitty 10 watt and I’m probably gonna upgrade soon because it’s a beginner amp. I’m hoping to get better tone out of a Fender mustang 40 but idk. Stage equipment sounds pretty cool, do you play in a band?

Ya can't beat "free"! Just use your Marshall! And, I understand that $ is tight when you are a student. I get that. Been there. But, if it takes 8-9 gigs to get $100, then you need to demand more $$$!!! A big reason musicians are being underpaid is because they will accept gigs paying $11-12! That and damned dj's...
As a student this was ideal to get away from my DS-1 (yay for volume drops on low-output pickups). I appreciate that $100 is a lot, but it's ultimately worth it to upgrade (you can also probably flog the DS-1 for a bit to offset the cost). Also, as has been said, you need to up what you are asking for gigs. If I'm not putting on the show (in which case I'll take breaking even), it's got to be at least £30 to pique my interest. If it costs you more in petrol to get to the venue don't do the gig.

So to get to "B", you have to bend down and switch it manually? Fantastic sound, BUT why not just put 2 buttons on it to allow quick switching?
