In CA with smog, CARB and the police stopping and inspecting, either a stealth build 5SGTE or go to the trouble of getting a 2gr CARB approved. Stealth 5SGTE = 5S block and crank, delete balance shaft and gear, Maxspeed rods for 5S. (Yes they make them) Weisco or Thrum pistons from PSI, maybe add oil squirters from a mini Cooper S to cool piston underside, tidy up the top end, maybe valve springs, a reworked turbo with stock housing aka CT27 from ATS or risk a cheap Mamba turbo, stealth plug and play standalone that fits in the stock ecu box and now you've got an easy 300whp, addlarger injectors and newer turbo, and that's a durable 400+h.p. that rips. Intercooler is unregulated in CA, so feel free to upgrade that without penalty. Absent the obvious turbo swap, that will be a nice setup that will last and still give blow off eargasms.
Pure awesome man glad she is a garage queen they are getting harder to find in good condition. A lot of them have a ton of rust here in the states its just a killer.
The best is subjective> depends on the budget. For a lot of us K series is thrown out the door because it's simply Honda not Toyota. Also a lot of people look at a K series swap as de-valuing the car. I'd do 2GR and then later down the road 2GR turbo all day. But that is a big budget. Look at Kyle he can push the K series but he's on his 10th engine.. I think lol. If you are simply drag racing and don't care about the Honda thing. do K series all day long. People don't understand usable power either.. so your car needs to be setup to use it. I actually have a GEN3, 3sgte that I may use for an AW11 swap that came out of my 93T that's going 5sgte with GEN3 head.. but that build started before the 2GR craze and really the k series stuff was popular or I would have done 2GR turbo.
I agree with you 100 percent!!!!!! Hell yeah man 5sgte in a aw11 broooo that is major power!!!! But yeah 2gr turbo really took off last year so very understandable. The 5sgte has always been my dream build but the 2gr turbo is more feasible in my opinion.
I have a k24 in mine…kinda wishing I went 2GR though tbh. Only thing I like is having the 6 speed trans although it’s not as strong as the Toyota 5 speed.
@@wadadlli on a NA application the 2GR is super reliable. Turbo wise of course reliability declines but is still a new application for us Mr2 owners only time will tell for those who are turbo. And yes no Na 2GR could make 600 But a turbo one will and that is on a stock block…..i like the 2GR on a Na just because of the sound but is all personal preference.
Hey, brother. Been watching your content.I bought A 91M.R2 with the 5S.F.E engine. And the engine has Metal shavings Inside. The Rebuilt here in arizona is costing me six thousand two hundred. Was thinking like you said , If I have low budget money just do a k serious turbo engine. planning to keep the car forever. And pass it down to my son. So I should just save the money and go k swap, huh??..lol Thanks for. Your content!
hey bro thanks for the support!!!!! but yeah 6k for a rebuild is way too much and definitely not worth it. but yes ill save up till I have I enough for a kswap or if you wanna ride and want to take things slow you could always swap in a replacement motor for a few hundred bucks and drive it in the meantime till you save up for the kswap.
@@mr2dailydriv3n I was just telling the wife yesterday, I better check insurance, and make sure it's replacement vale, not "book" value.. Thank you for the comment!
What if you already have a JDM GEN 3 3sgte turbo that runs good but you want a 2GR turbo. Is it worth it? considering keeping the car for the long run.
I personally would wait till you 3sgte goes out then upgrade to the 2GR. It would be up to personal preference i myself like the 3sgte better but that’s just me.
@@mr2dailydriv3n thank for you reply. So forget to mention I bought the car with a bad transmission. So is it worth installing the new e153 (which I already have) on the 3gste or wait until the I'm ready to do the 2gr swap instead of installing the transmission twice?
@justinortiz3448 swap out the new tranny and ride!!!! If you want to really go 2gr then Start piecing it on the side but in the meantime enjoy the mr2 with your new e153z
Seen 2GR stock for stock beat the K24 on track and at the strip. Modded maybe a different story but stock NA the 2GR is king. But respect your feelings.

2gr sounds so nice and just pulls on demand.
I agree my brother 💯 percent i linda like the bov sound more
Hi, I have a Toyota MR2 from 1994 2000, aspirated, 30 years old, always in the garage, a jewel, 161,000 km. Very sought after car!!

Yeah man but dont knock yourself too much the k swap is a good swap. You dont get that F1 sound but very good engine.
The 2gr is a way less reliable engine. U won't get 600hp on a stock 2gr

Has anyone tried the 2/3RZ or 2TR? The Truck motors would make for a nice throttle response.
Not that i know of. The hardest part is being the first one with a unique swap just because the motor mounts would be custom and costly.
I’ve been thinking of the new v6 turbo tundra motors for an mr2.
What about the new Acura TL J Swap from Hux Racing???
Ohhh yeah that is another great swap!!!
I put a 2gr turbo, makes close to 800, and makes power fast, not like a k forever to get going
Dammm 800 that is a ton of power!!!! Congrats bro is it fully built motor on unopened?
@mr2dailydriv3n Well, it was 765, and when my Je pistons and rods came in, we built it. Ran out of fuel , I'm gonna need another pump
@ozziealvarez1971 wow awesome man that is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 do you have IG? will you be taking it to the track anytime soon?
Rough.. I have a 2000 that just turned 64k original. I want more (A lot more) out of it, but only 64K.. FML..
Man you’re sitting in Gold (resale value) especially with that low of mileage. I would just keep it until you have to do a swap.
