Hi, It’s ultimately your choice how about a small terminus and use the other board a fiddle yard, or... maybe a centrally placed backscene board, create a horseshoe shaped layout, so trains come out of a tunnel maybe into the station, then go around the back for storage. The period depends on what trains you have, no point in buying new stock on a temporary / interim layout.
I'd personally try and stick with the era you're with already to save yourself some dosh! a scrapyard or a TMD would be good or how about a small steel terminal? maybe you could even squeeze in a single platform for a Class 150?
I've decided to stay with the same era, that way loco's will be interchangeable. Most likely going for a TMD now I've gone and got some foam insulation today and the way I have it allows for a bridge, car park and small incline road up to the TMD.
What's with the one dislike? 😂 I can't get my main baseboards up yet and I want to run trains, so that's why I'm making this small end to end layout. Wow, didn't know that'd earn a dislike 😂
Very interesting idea, to be honest if I go for a beeching cuts era station and goods yard there'd be a decent amount of steam loco scrap, rails, lineside scrap etc!

Currently got 1980's to late 1990's stuff.
What about a Mail Depot? Could be interesting.

If running diesel then a TMD would be appropriate or if steam then maybe a coal yard or even a roundhouse?
I'm completely undecided, hence the video. It's always good to get outside opinions :)

Go with what Tim said scrapyard, you could have all sorts of stuff in there not just train's.
