I just want to comment and give you props for keeping the show going for so long and still keeping it interesting. I know that is a hard thing to do. I respect the time and effort you put into these videos. Anymore people like James Rolfe just upload any crap to his channel for views. You still have a good interesting show, James Rolfe has been milking one joke for the past 8 years
I think the pc engine probably has one of the most obscure libraries of games out there, but they simply make so many games that would be appealing to my personal tastes. Its very to love the pc engine library but I think I'll simply stick to playing the games that were lucky enough to have a north american release. There are just simply so many games out there I need to manage the time accordingly.
I see no down side to reproductions; nothing wrong with them whatsoever. When people sell them as originals, that is the malicious intent of the seller; not an inherent flaw of the product. Personally I like when repro's have altered artwork to show it isn't original
I love the fact that there is clearly a demand for these repro's and like you said trying to pass them off as real is really low. I fully support and will order some games for myself
For those wondering its around $132-$155 USD depending on currency conversions being high or low. For four games packed the way they are, that is a fantastic price.
I have a strange question that kind of pertains to the subject. Say there is a major Anime released over in Japan that's from 1998. It's been remastered in HD and released on Bluray but not made available in North America. Do you download it, import it or wait for a North American release? Thoughts? Personally I find it extremely hard waiting for these types of things because I'm a sucker for a clearer image.
While I am a huge Shinobi fan I would have been ecstatic if i had had a Pc Engine with Ninja Spirit on back in the day, alas I have never even played PC Engine/Turbo Gfx16 till this day. Luckily I was one of the few who had a good buddy who had a Neo Geo...at least something out of the ordinary. Still loving my Genesis. Cool videos Johnny. Keep up the good work.
Interesting, thanks Johnny for carrying on about the PC engine. I went back to the Wii shop and have been checking more stuff and got r-type its incredible for a conversion and all I am playing at the moment although the c64 versions music is untouchable. Will be looking at more Y's will probably be next.
That ninja game is actually, short, repetitive, and generally pretty boring. Though it gets high marks from people who value rarity over actual gameplay.
Those are some really nice looking repros! I've actually never heard of three of those titles before. O.o I'd love to get my hands on that set...as well as an actual PC Engine Duo R console. Lot of great games that remained Japanese exclusive for it--such a shame!
nothing wrong with repro I like your stance on emulators too like I was once gifted a turbo grafx 16 back in 2017 and I couldnt afford any games so I sold it for $200 on ebay and put that towards a pc rig
Ha ha I almost bought this a few weeks before the PRGE dude but decided to save my money for the expo instead. I'm right there with ya man I too absolutely love all things PCE/TG-16
Hey J, I was just wondering if you had ever played 'Cybernator' on SNES? I know you love Mecha and I love this game and would love it if you would review it .... nobody seems to talk about it ? would be amazing to receive a response :)
What I think someone should do is have a company like say Xseed. To have a separate division and try to acquire licenses for older games and manufacture for that console it was made for. Especially with the love Xseed likes to give to their games, I think alot of people would like to go that route than to risk bootlegs and scams. Or if you prefer to play them on current consoles, then you can buy them from each systems respectful market.
I would really like to find someone who does Turbo Graphix reproductions. I have a weird thing about my collection with trying to keep everything NTSC. I love getting NES and SNES reproductions with english patches built into them. I think they are the bees knees, and if they did things like that for Turbo Graphix I would be very happy. Its good to know that the japanese PC Engine is getting some repro love at least.
johnnyefc123 It has an 8 bit cpu (that has a clock speed *way* over what the NES/Fami or SMS are capable of), along with a 16 bit gpu setup. Hope that helps.
People should know that the guy behind PCEWORKS is pretty shady. Some people object to the idea of him selling other company's games, and some justify in their own way. But it goes much deeper than this. This guy, Tobias of PCEWORKS, actually made bootlegs of Sapphire (an expensive rare game) and tried to pass them off as the real thing. When he got caught, he tried to play it off as they were 2nd runs. He's also taken homebrew and translatons from the community, without their permission or even contacting then, and made reproductions to sell for his own profit. They put a lot of work and time into something, for free for the community to enjoy, and he comes along and just takes it for his own. That's the kind of guy you are supporting when you guys buy these fancy repros. Just know that. It's also hurts the homebrew and translation community, because it's a straight kick in the nuts - and nobody likes that. It makes people weary of doing future stuffs. Just FYI. But hey, those repros are sitting pretty on your shelf - so no worries, right?
As soon as he said it came from Germany, I knew it had to be the same people that produced the KO Sapphires, though I don't know that anyone ever came out officially about that previously. The problem with the Sapphire release is that it's *not* an obvious KO (unless you know what you are looking for), and the market was saturated with these KOs about 10 years ago. It looks like this "PCEWorks" isn't putting up a store (yet), and is only sending out promo copies to RUclips reviewers or by email order only. So I guess that Johnny is doing a free promo in exchange for a copy that he was given. I'm not trying to bust his chops for this, but the whole thing is shady to me. The PCEWorks people appear to be trying to remain as anonymous as possible and want to funnel these games to direct Paypal payments by email only. Anyway. These games are not "The Best of Japan". As a PCE collector, they're actually some pretty average games (as is Sapphire). I'm glad that people are taking an interest in this system and I understand that it's become cost prohibitive for many people to collect for it, but I'm not sure that this is the best example of what we can do for the console. This person, or group, is just capitalizing on the high cost of these games in their original release. I'm not going to get into my opinion of the ethical issues of bootlegs. I know that we all have our own opinions on the subject. However, I'd love to know what someone who's actually purchased this boxed set actually paid for it. But anyway. Don't fall into the trap of believing that these games are the best that the PCE had to offer. They are not, by far. Rarity is by no means a way to measure quality.
As long as they have been given the thumbs up from the original creators it's classed as a reproduction, if they've not got the thumbs up, then they could very well get sued.
Never heard of that company and I'm from Germany :| 120 EUR for the whole set seems like a fair price, I wonder if I get a discount because of national shipping :}
We gotta admit, thanks to the wonderful world of emulation, we cannot, in hundreds of years, afford those games with all those crazy prices, seriously ! There are so many great games out there to discover and play, that sometimes its safer to just stick to the ISOs/ROMs experience Collecting for some systems (like the PC Engine) nowadays is a nightmare !
Another great episode but I have to say you kind of butchered the titles of the games a bit. Faucette Amour-FO-SET AMOOR Kaze Kiri-KAH-ZEH Kiri. Pc engine rules.
I would love to see these games for sale on Gog.com and Steam. If they were for sale from the copyrights owner, it would be a treat to have them in my collection.
can any one help my pc engine wont tune in on RF CABLE, it all blurred and buzzing sound, is this because im in the uk and its ntsc? all my other RF console work fine
I get the appeal of reproduction carts, especially if they have a translation put in and have nice packaging made for it. I don't get buying those loose carts of games that come with nothing else. Instead of spending $40+ on a bare seiken densetsu 3 repro why not just get flash cart and open yourself to a whole world of games that never came to your region? If you're buying bare repro carts then all you probably care about is just playing the game on your console
Just recently bought a pc engine started collecting for it, just need the cd attachment and I will be happy! But these games don't look that good, gameplay wise, silly price tags ey?
I feel bittersweet about reproductions for the same reasons, Johnny. However, I'll still purchase them just so I can have fun playing them...if the price is right.
I am glad they put the notice on there that they are reproduction games. It would really suck to pay $300+ for a game to find out its not the real game. I would buy reproductions without hesitation knowing its a reproduction
There's just one game I am keeping an eye on ebay for but like these games it's expensive it's called Pulseman for the Sega Mega Drive or the Sega Genesis here in America and the reason I want it is because of it's history and the developer who did it. Pulseman was developed by Game Freak and yes that Game Freak the very same one who makes the Pokemon Games and created the franchise and Pulseman was a pre Pokemon game and it was more like a Megaman game so I really would like to have it in cartage form but I don't have the money for it. And I do know about the reproduction carts out there but I will not get it because it's not the original game I wish someone at Game Freak if they are reading this please remake Pulseman please so I could play it and maybe the original game would go down in price.
I know everyone's already gotten on your ass about this, but I feel like adding. So sue me. You can learn Japanese pronunciation in an hour or less -- you can do it, and you'll be happy you did. The vowels are basic, a as in father, e as in pay, i as in key, u as in lute, and o as in own. When you see two vowels together, they are pronounced separately, but so quickly they sound like one vowel.
Okey im not a huge super real deal game collector but I never understand what´s the big deal the have the original game im just glad I can have the game and enjoy it reproduction or not. I collect games I like and want to play and if I can get 10 game for the price of 2 games I dont care about reproduction or pre-owned.
I hate repo carts and bootlegs because When you buy a loose game online you have the chance of it being a bootleg or repo cart!!! And you said that people sell them online but sometimes they dont even tell you, THOSE SONS OF BITCHES!!!
KA (kah) ze (zeh) Ki (key) ri (ree). Kaze Kiri. 風霧. Wind (Mist) / Mist wind, also a twist of words on the main character's name being Kaze. I'm not trying to nit pick. I watch your videos religiously and I have a lot of respect for what you do for the retrogaming community. But for someone with as many views as you get....and for loving Japanese games as much as you do. You should put a little bit of time to learn how to pronounce each game properly before a video. I'm not saying learn the language! Just learn to pronounce Japanese a bit better. Otherwise great video once again!
The only people intrusted in buying the originals of games that cost 500 to 1000 dollars are collector's that don't even play the games they just buy up all the rare games because there rich and see it as an investment so that real gamers like us can't buy those games and actually play them at a reasonable price ! So I support reproductions , home brews, game hacks , system mods , flash carts , emulators and getting free old isos,roms,mp4s ,jpegs ,mp3s , mpegs, avis, wavs, movs, asfs, flvs, pngs ,xvids, pdfs ,wmas, flacs, aacs, aiffs, pcms ,divexs and any other media types as long as its not new and its hard to find or to expensive to buy then I think people with money to burn should pay full price and people on a budget should get it relatively cheep or free the same way the top 1% of the worlds rich people should pay most of the taxes because there company's do most of the damage and they work the least and the bottom 70 % should pay way less taxes as well as the reality poor people should not pay any taxes and get free houseing wile the get free schooling or job training so they they can get a chance to support themselves eventually and possibly pay taxes ! That's why I'm proud to be a Canadian citizen like you Jonny because we live in a socialist country like all of Europe where we help each other and were not afraid of our government or becoming communists and losing our rights like to have guns like Amaricans are so much infact that there country isn't controlled by a government elected democracy it's controlled by capitalist corporations !
I'm sorry but anyone who would pay hundreds of dollars for those games is an idiot. Think of what you are getting for your money. A 20+ year old game that will hold you attention for about 5 minutes. Or you could go buy GTAV for $40 or so and have a whole world to explore.
There really is no excuse or reason for buying illegal bootlegs. You claimed the reason for them is so you can finally play the game yourself. You don't need bootleg to do this. You can either use emulation or use a flash cart. The flash cart will be cheaper and you have the 100% perfect experience, the same as the original. Buying these illegal reproductions is a bad idea because it is supporting crooks selling illegal software, and it takes money away from legitimate games one could otherwise buy with that money. We all have a limited amount of money and if we as retrogamers all decide to really buy into these things and spend our real money on it, that diverts money away from what could go to legitimate products, like flash carts, or new games or whatever. /end rant.
There is no reason to use emulators though if you own the actual hardware. The isos of the game can be just burned to a CD-R and played on the actual system as it doesn't have any copy protection, neither does the Sega CD.
If the game is not the same region as your system you have to either use a flash cart\adapter, or alternatiely you can just use a simple program to patch the iso file to the region of your system and voila. The machines have region protection, but no copy protection like later CD-based system do.
You can rant all you like against repro's, but remember that these are games from the early 90's, the developers don't even exist anymore, and the only people getting money from them are the sellers on ebay. There is no magical royalty fee that goes to the developers if you buy an original for $400. Sure you can play emulator, but a PCE game on a HD monitor looks way "worse" than on an actual CRT TV, even with various graphical filters you don't get the authentic experience, just a super-sharp pixellated approximation that works and plays well, but doesn't look the same, because of the ways "pixels" are shown on a CRT screen, they are little clusters of 3 colors, creating a kind of blur and color bleed effect. Scanlines on an emulator doesn't look remotely like actual scanlines for instance, it's not a static thing on a CRT screen. Flash carts are obviously the best way to do it, but it's no more legal to download ROMs or ISO files either.
I very much disagree with the sentiment that all reproductions are bad for any reason, period. Heck even the most common versions of reproductions are, in a way, original products. Take Earthbound Zero for example. This is a game you pretty much not buy a legitimate copy of at all. There is no way to play this game on an NTSC system without and adapter and you certainly can't play it in English, because it doesn't exist, and good luck trying to get a physical copy of something that doesn't exist. Being able to own a game that would be impossible for North American players to play is one of the great things reproduction and really hurts no one in the end. Its not lowering the value of an existing game, because a lot of translated reproductions are not available to anyone outside of reproduction...and also to hold a physical version of these games in your hand and put it on a shelf is a lot more satisfying than just having a rom on your computer somewhere. To call the people who gives us access to these products "crooks" does them quite a disservice and is a little unfair in my opinion .
***** If you owned a cd based pce system you would know that they are very picky with cd rs,most burned cds will not work. Considering the age of the systems, going for repros that are printed cds is actually a good thing.
I just ordered this one. It is the final one I am ordering. Rounding out the collection.
I just want to comment and give you props for keeping the show going for so long and still keeping it interesting. I know that is a hard thing to do. Johnny makes some of the best RUclips videos.
thanks for the heads up johnny,Going to order my copy now.
I love the fact that there is clearly a demand for these repro's and like you said trying to pass them off as real is really low. I fully support and will order some games for myself

lol at the naked demon at the end!

If it was something that meant something I would buy the original!
I don't care if they are bootlegs, I wanna play 'em too!
Welcome back to another episowwd
While I am a huge Shinobi fan I would have been ecstatic if i had had a Pc Engine with Ninja Spirit on back in the day, alas I have never even played PC Engine/Turbo Gfx16 till this day. Luckily I was one of the few who had a good buddy who had a Neo Geo...at least something out of the ordinary. Still loving my Genesis. Cool videos Johnny. Keep up the good work.
Blazing Lazers, Gate of Thunder, and Lords of Thunder are all I need to get my shooter fix on the TurboGrafx.
Gradius pc engine
Rondo of blood
Gradius 2 pc engine
Super star solider
Ys 1&2 and 4
It brings me back memories
Interesting, thanks Johnny for carrying on about the PC engine. I went back to the Wii shop and have been checking more stuff and got r-type its incredible for a conversion and all I am playing at the moment although the c64 versions music is untouchable. Will be looking at more Y's will probably be next.
That Ninja game looks sooo sweet!
I love your videos regarding PC Engine ^_^ Always such awesome games.
That ninja game is actually, short, repetitive, and generally pretty boring. Though it gets high marks from people who value rarity over actual gameplay.
Zach B
The same could be said about a lot of games that aren't rare.
It reminds me of Shinobi III
Those are some really nice looking repros! I've actually never heard of three of those titles before. O.o
I'd love to get my hands on that set...as well as an actual PC Engine Duo R console. Lot of great games that remained Japanese exclusive for it--such a shame!
Please do a best pc engine games video! I finally got one recently and want to know whats good!
five years later and they are still making these repros...
nothing wrong with repro I like your stance on emulators too like I was once gifted a turbo grafx 16 back in 2017 and I couldnt afford any games so I sold it for $200 on ebay and put that towards a pc rig
those games looks so cool
love ur enthusiasm..love your vids!! :)
Ha ha I almost bought this a few weeks before the PRGE dude but decided to save my money for the expo instead. I'm right there with ya man I too absolutely love all things PCE/TG-16
It’s amazing I love mine
Great stuff!
Hey J,
I was just wondering if you had ever played 'Cybernator' on SNES? I know you love Mecha and I love this game and would love it if you would review it .... nobody seems to talk about it ? would be amazing to receive a response :)
Kaze isn't pronounced like "case"... It's Kah-zseh.
Feigndall
Well you ain't very good at Japanese then lil buddy.
Awsome episode Johnny. Btw why do u use your opening for the show anymore?
Great video. Defenetly gonna check these out. ;)
Keep up tha great work love ur show!!!!!
That's awesome man, pc engine is classic. I agree with you stand point on reproductions
You forgot to put a link to it in the description
For the love of god, Munich Germany is where I live and I have no clue something like that gets released!
Please post link to PC Engine Works!
These are some nice repro games.
Thanks 👍 video is very intresting for me, but where is the sword ? 😎
I really liked your clip
Music from Sapphire. Love that game. unfortunately I only own a bootleg
yeah, Kaze is pronounced "kah-zay". It means "wind".
No matter where I search, I don't find videos of the repro games to compare them to the originals.
+Jammet Leopard You don't necessarily need a video for that, simple photos will easily do the trick since the differences are quite noticeable.
Curious if these are licensed by original rights holder? would make it a bit cooler if so vs true bootleg.
Thanks for the review!
Mr PC Engine FX! been a fan for years Aaron!
Well, the PC Egnine isn't really an 8-bit console isn't it? More like middle ground between 8 and 16 bit as I understand it.
no one i know had a pc engine growing up (in england) so i dont know much about it but i was amazed when he said it was an 8 bit console
Well, I think its capabilities are way beyond the NES or Master System ones, so I always think of it as an 16 bit console.
johnnyefc123 It has an 8 bit cpu (that has a clock speed *way* over what the NES/Fami or SMS are capable of), along with a 16 bit gpu setup. Hope that helps.
Hey John did you hear about the new macross series
I heard one was announced but thats about it?
Not much news has come out but I'm pumped

As long as they have been given the thumbs up from the original creators it's classed as a reproduction, if they've not got the thumbs up, then they could very well get sued.
i think not the creaters but the publishers etc. creators mostly have no rights as far as i know. like in the music genre.
yeah that would make more sense, id imagine finding the original creators would be near impossible haha
Why are you up so late? :)
Never heard of that company and I'm from Germany :|
120 EUR for the whole set seems like a fair price, I wonder if I get a discount because of national shipping :}
Johnny u rule!!!! God bless 👍🏿❤️🤟🏿

to answer your question:
see " Queen's Blade /-Gate " series ( PSP ) or " Senran Kagura " ( 3DS / Vita ) : ) you're welcome.
Sylphia if i may say looks like the Genesis/Mega-Drive game Phelios crossed with M.U.S.H.A.
Sylphia is made by compile that's why it's the same developer of musha.
The boxset in the video costs around 120 euros so in us dollars thats about $410.
U got a new subscriber 💚🎸✊
How much did you paid for the boxset?
I still probably wouldn't be able to afford that box set even. :(

Pc engine rules.
PC Engine look so tiny and little, but i think is really good console like an all games
Dont ignore the translation drama! People aren't being credited or paid for their work!
How much is it? You nor the website mentions the cost. Please tell us. Thanks.
119 EUR including worldwide shipping, it's on the website, but you need to click on "continue reading".
I would love to see these games for sale on Gog.com and Steam. If they were for sale from the copyrights owner, it would be a treat to have them in my collection.

Not really...
he is very nice
are tg16/ pce region free?
No link?
yeah its definitely a Strider rip off but still a great game.

especially those.. ehem... ecchi games... like senran kagura for vita.

Sorry but I HATE repros/bootlegs, its destroying Game collecting. especially for Neo Geo.

If you owned a cd based pce system you would know that they are very picky with cd rs,most burned cds will not work. Considering the age of the systems, going for repros that are printed cds is actually a good thing.
