[REMASTERED] Portal's 'Still Alive' Played by a Fiber Laser in 4K!

- Опубликовано: 25 окт 2024
- During the long holiday weekend I was able to borrow the laser and re-tune and re-time it to make 'Still Alive' a little more pleasant on the ears.
'Still Alive' by Jonathan Coulton played by an Automated Laser Corporation 20 watt fiber laser on a steel plate.
Background tracks from Xusder: • GLaDOS - Still Alive (...
This is glorious. As a musician, as well as one who admires technology this is SO gratifying. What were you able to do differently this time around to adjust the timing, versus your first video on this?
Thanks! The timing was mostly just being more careful about where the rectangles were placed in relation to each other. The first time around I wasn't really trying to do an awesome job, I didn't think many people would see it anyway, lol. I did also do a few quick cuts in editing to fix some of the longer gaps between musical sections - I don't think the software "counts" long pauses very well since sometimes they would be too late and other times too early. I think there is a little bit of an element with Windows controlling it and not being a 'real-time' operating system. But mostly it was just being more particular about adjusting the timing.
And if others are wondering, the tuning the first time around, was working in thousandths of an inch increments for the rectangles that make the notes. 0.010" would be too sharp and 0.011" would be too flat; there was no in between. Later on when I did the Megaman video, I found the software had a measurement system called "bits" (which I still don't know what that is) but it is a finer control than just one thousandth of an inch at a time.
I admire your work.
This is true art. And after all this time you have come back.
Even if it's just for a bit, just a remaster, I don't care.
I'm happy now.
thanks
I'm gladOs this series is still alive.
i get it
Chris DePrisco So the software probably has a minimum distance increment it works in that doesn't mesh well with inches. It then stores the amount of increments up from zero as a binary number, the smallest unit of is called a bit just as the smallest unit of our numbers are called digits. When you increase by thousandths of an inch it probably is just going to the nearest number it can actually store near it. So by working in bits you are working with the actual increments the machine works with. You can look up binary to understand more of what bits are.
Wait...fiber lasers use ablation...so then it’s actually “I’m still alive” played by explosions

This is really quite a feat, having it both make the right frequencies at the right times AND produce a discernable (and relevant) image. I've been thinking for a long time if it would be possible to program gcode for my 3D printer that would play music and print an actual object but it seems quite tricky due to the 3 degrees of freedom. Here you are basically in 1 dimension for each line so it makes it a lot more feasible. Congrats man, this is very impressive.

This is possibly the nerdiest, yet best thing I have seen in my entire life.
I work with lasers at my job (yag, fiber, and co2) and I was so excited after seeing your previous video that I started showing it to everyone at work. Then my coworker said they had a sample program that did the same thing. I forgot which song it was (classical), but it drew the sheet music, notes, and clef. I looked at the programming of it and was astounded.
You sir, have a lot of patience. I'm glad you got to fiddle around with the laser one more time for an awesome remastering of the song.

“Yo what instrument do you play?”

The sound is coming from the ablation, not the laser, otherwise the pitch and volume would remain constant, since the laser isn't modulating. I think people don't realize that ablating the material actually causes tiny explosions at the surface, which is what causes the noise.
EFormance Engineering the laser actually does have a pulse frequency that you can modify. Source: worked with a few laser engravers
My mother was a laser.
You mother was a loser
right, that is a pretty common feature on almost any laser machine - usually you'll have to configure a speed, power and ppi setting for common laser engravers
the speed just controls how fast the laser head moves on the axis, the power determines the wattage and the ppi (pulses per inch) setting defines the resolution, so how many pulses the laser makes
Either way it's cool. Music with explosions or music with lasers, both are cool.
I noticed this was made on my birthday. But anyways amazing work!!!
... which happens to be a day ahead of mine...
Happy birthday!
@@BroItsBTC happy birthday!
The cheap Chinese lasers with a 20W emitter are fully capable of doing this - it will be just a little quieter, as it seems that the model you have has a higher pulse energy(going off the max pulse frequency of 20MHz listed).
+Spirit This one uses a 5kHz pulse but it also has multiple waveforms, some sound much better than others. I'm just afraid the cheap lasers will be so quiet I won't get a good recording over the fan noise. I'd love to try though!
Damn, am I interrupting your nerdy conversation?

Is it ironic that I'm eating cake while watching this?
I don't know why, but this game series has some strong sentimental value to it, and anything I see or hear about it gives me a happy/sad feeling. I bet most of this feeling comes from the fact that I watched my dad play bits of the series every night on his old Dell desktop setup running Windows xp or something from around that time, with my sisters about 10 years ago. Those were the days, little to no stress, lived in my old house, parents were together, dogs/fish were alive. I miss those days, and this game helps bring a part of it back.

Your first video and a lot of others out there similar to it are what inspired me to start manipulating technology to get things never intended to play music to play music. I think it's awesome that you went back and revisited this. It's a shame you haven't been able to really capitalize on it, but it is totally understandable. I doubt your company would be very happy if they knew you were faffing about with a no doubt expensive piece of equipment of theirs for some silly videos.
If you like doing this sort of thing (just the general act of making things play music that are not instruments), getting electrical motors to do it is fairly easy actually and is super cheap. There's something really spectacular about it that just draws me to it.
The nostalgia
:0
Music on things that are not meant to play music is always so awesome. It means someone who understands music and the tool they are using to make it is behind it all. No fitting song other than this one either. Great work!
