What's more is that this song has a story people can relate to. The narrator goes to California with all the hopes and dreams of making it big mainly due to stories he has been led to believe. However, once he is there, he finds that California was not at all what he imagined. Hence, he leaves disappointed and disillusioned.
Got married in a castle in Salzburg Austria and went to a hotel looking for some place to have dinner...I asked the waitress if she could dedicate a song to us...it was an all German Band, men wearing Lederhosen and women dressed in traditional dresses..I thought they would play a nice German song.....they came on stage and dedicated this song and sang it perfect...my wife died at 47 years old but i will never forget that night RIP Terry

@Matias_V , For many people including myself, the song brings back memories of hearing it when I was a kid and the music is happy sounding. However, I totally agree with you. When you listen to the lyrics, you find they are not happy at all. The narrator goes to California with high hopes and dreams of making it big only to find out it was not what he imagined. Therefore, he is homesick and wants to go home to his hometown.

Haven't heard this for a long long time. Oh, how it reminds me of my youth growing up in Southern California. It was so much different back then, so much different. Gonna be 60 in a couple years...God I miss those days. At my age, you do a lot of harking back, especially considering the state of the world right now.
Our cleaner at work just casually mentioned one day that a friend of his had a gym in his house. Quick investigation and it transpires that his friend was Albert Hammond. He even had the pics to back it up. Said he's a lovely guy.
I can honestly believe he is a lovely guy....he interacts so naturally with his audiences...I saw him live in 1975 and he was so natural...almost humble, but with a great empathy with his audience. He is so successful and talented, yet never clamours for the limelight. Albert Hammond, thankyou from the bottom of my heart, for the decades of joy your music has brought me and millions of your fans worldwide. God bless you. We love you. ❤❤

My teen daughter asked why so many old songs are about California. I told her California has not always been a dump. Not too long ago it was a dream for people all over the world to live there.
One of the greatest Pop songs ever. It is timeless. And I love the melody, the lyrics and above all the voice of this talented young man from Gibraltar.( U.K. territory in Southern Spain ).
He wrote the Air That I Breathe that gave the Hollies a big hit, To All The Girls I've Loved Before and other songs recorded by Tina Turner, Chicago, Starship and others.
The melody of this song is truly beautiful. I danced this song many times and still do. Reminds me when I went to California many, many years ago. I was in Los Angeles when California was a beautiful state to visit. Love this song, it is very pretty indeed.
Thanks for everything Albert. You brought beauty and happiness (even with a sad song (Hey, that sounds like a great song title!)) into a lot of peoples lives.
1972: Hammond, with co-writer Mike Hazelwood, wrote a number of hits for various artists in the 70's and 80's. The Hollies "The Air that I Breathe" was likely the biggest. But this one Hammond did himself and hit #5 with it.
Been to many parts of the country and lived in many of them. I have to say it rains in all of them no matter how great they seem to be before you get there. Love this song.
@@michaelkoszowski3716 , Actually, when you think about it, this is song is not really about it raining anyplace. Rather, it is about someone who goes to California in pursuit of his dreams of making it big. However, when he is in California, he finds it is not at all what he was led to believe. Hence, he became disillusioned and wanted to go home.
Jimmy B others are correct here. You totally missed the point of this song. The title is sarcastic. It Never Rains in Southern California is part of the fake picture painted by Hollywood and many people about the beauty, glamor and weather, etc. It's ALL an illusion, just like the movies, the plastic surgery done to make people look "perfect" and all of the other hype about California and Hollywood. He didn't find it to be true because it ISN'T. His dreams were shattered and he realized the truth in the most painful way. This song resonates with many people because there are so many things in life we can be disillusioned by.
Many years ago I walked into a bar in San Francisco singing this song, after escaping from the torrential rain outside, hoping to impress/make the barmaid laugh. She wasn't at all impressed and told me very clearly that SF wasn't in southern California, I just had a beer.

I remember California! USMC San Diego! 1967..... Beautiful weather and girls!!!
I love this song.❤
Got on board a westbound seven forty-seven
Didn't think before deciding what to do
Oh, that talk of opportunities,
TV breaks and movies
Rang true,
sure rang true
Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California,
but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours
Out of work,
I'm out of my head
Out of self respect,
I'm out of bread
I'm underloved,
I'm underfed, I want to go home
It never rains in California,
but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours
Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?
Had offers but didn't know which one to take
Please don't tell 'em how you found me
Don't tell 'em how you found me
Gimme a break,
give me a break
Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California,
but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours
Thank you
@@danielwasierski7836 welcome!
Still love this song after all these years..
This song WAS the 70s! A CLASSIC BY A GREAT TALENT!
Seeing his appearance and hearing his voice really reminds me of the time when I was young with him, thank you
Haven't heard this for a long long time. Oh, how it reminds me of my youth growing up in Southern California. It was so much different back then, so much different. Gonna be 60 in a couple years...God I miss those days. At my age, you do a lot of harking back, especially considering the state of the world right now.
Better "over the hill" than under it, bro. I'll be 60 in January. But birthdays are a gift denied to many. 😎
I can relate. Born 69’👍
A well crafted pop song that still sounds brand new even after all these years... & it tells an interesting but sad story.
I can see why this GREAT TALENT is teaching music! AN AWESOME TALENT!
Another one of those great 70's songs. The greatest decade in rockn roll.
Nostalgic Albert Hammond videos are rare and good
I love this track and it never gets old !!!
My favourite as well. 👏👏
Folks, as I'm sitting here watching this, I can't help but wonder if today's kids will ever look back with nostalgia on the music they're growing up with
I don't think they will.
IS THAT WHAT THEY CALL IT NOWADAY'S ,,,,,,,, MUSIC? I HAVE OTHER NAMES FOR IT!!.
What’s to look back on? We have a generation of writers who took Frost and Shakespeare, who got replaced with a group with studied poetic illiteracy.
I was 9 years old when this came out , definitely remember hearing this on the radio in NYC .
I was five when it came out & I remember listening to the 45. It's a great song!
👍👏👏👏✌️🎹🎶🎼🎵🎤🎸🎺🎶🎼🎵🇲🇽
Such a sad song. He brings out the emotion.
It’s amazing MR. Hammond is a great songwriter and talented singer.
Agree. 💜💜
i keep listening even now 2024
Really love this man's voice. A great song for a great singer.
love this song, never gets old!!!
My mom had this song on 45 record, she played it until she wore it out , I learned it I love it
Our music teacher would come to our school once a month, or so. She would bring her guitar, and we kids would all sing. I still remember singing this song. It was probably 5th grade, or so.
Grew up hearing his music. 🎸🎸🙏🙏🍀
boy I wish I could go back in time.
Albert, when I was a kid,.. My family in Tijuana we lessening your music, late 70's. We just live by the Beach. Good memories!... Thank You,.. for your music.
I love Tijuana. I miss it so much.
My mom introduced me to this song when I was little, I enjoyed it ever since
songs had meaning,if you like the 70s tunes, you will just do fine in life...
Listened to this song a million times brilliant
Probably the best song from the 70,s
Tony Kulics also sings really good in Spanish Lolol- 😆👍
Tony Kulics there’s so many to choose from, born in 59. 60s 70s best years of my life, miss those days dearly.
The 70s had alot of gems. Shame I was born in '76 and not in '66: would have really gotten into the groove going from elementary into junior high.
Stumbled upon this song quite by accident, it's before my generation but i love the lyrics and generally it's a lovely song, thank you ♥️
👍👍👏🙌✌️🎤🎸🎺🎹🎶🎼🎵🎹🎶🎼🎵🇲🇽
Fell in love with you and this song back in the 70s when I was a teen 😊😊❤️❤️❤️❤️
My teen daughter asked why so many old songs are about California. I told her California has not always been a dump. Not too long ago it was a dream for people all over the world to live there.
New York and California are the Best states to live in. The nicest and smartest people in the U.S.
Still lovely for me
@@scottross6404 The massive population exodus from both states say otherwise. Smart people know to leave.
@@scottross6404 I wouldn't live there if you paid me to!
Still is "the dream" for many. Just depends on one's attitude. I loved the years I lived in California and I still like to visit on occasion.
50年前中学生の時初めて好きになった洋楽です🎉懐かしい限りです😂鳥肌がたちました‼️
1960년생쯤 되셨겠네요. 건강하세요. 저는 1967년생.South Korea.
It is sad they don't make music like this anymore.
All "music" is SOLD today! I HATE THIS!
TOTAL TALENT!

One of the greatest Pop songs ever. It is timeless. And I love the melody, the lyrics and above all the voice of this talented young man from Gibraltar.( U.K. territory in Southern Spain ).
I thought i am old at 80 but there is someone here who is 84. Good luck and excellent health for you.
I'm 60 and you will both out live me.

He is also a brilliant songs writer
Free electric band,
Down by the river.
He wrote the Air That I Breathe that gave the Hollies a big hit, To All The Girls I've Loved Before and other songs recorded by Tina Turner, Chicago, Starship and others.
He writes great song
🥀Beautiful Song Brilliant lyrics, vocals and music🥀✌
The melody of this song is truly beautiful. I danced this song many times and still do. Reminds me when I went to California many, many years ago. I was in Los Angeles when California was a beautiful state to visit. Love this song, it is very pretty indeed.
Albert's indeed the icon of early 70's pop music. Love his music to bits!
Never underestimate the power of a smile! Or ANY facial expression; especially whilst performing?!!!
Thanks for everything Albert. You brought beauty and happiness (even with a sad song (Hey, that sounds like a great song title!)) into a lot of peoples lives.
I love this music ❤🕺💃
1972: Hammond, with co-writer Mike Hazelwood, wrote a number of hits for various artists in the 70's and 80's. The Hollies "The Air that I Breathe" was likely the biggest. But this one Hammond did himself and hit #5 with it.
Albert Hammond's music is well known throughout the Universe.
Grew up in the 70-s--so glad! Beautiful song.
Been to many parts of the country and lived in many of them. I have to say it rains in all of them no matter how great they seem to be before you get there. Love this song.
Interesting observation . 👍
@@williamlandolfi7858 ..yeah , especially when that mortgage bill came in . 😖
You missed the point brother, he sings about the beautiful picture they paint about Hollywood to young aspiring actors and actresses
Great Song 💖🎶🎶🎶
Many years ago I walked into a bar in San Francisco singing this song, after escaping from the torrential rain outside, hoping to impress/make the barmaid laugh. She wasn't at all impressed and told me very clearly that SF wasn't in southern California, I just had a beer.
