Learn all about latitudes and longitudes, how to find the poles, the hemispheres, important lines of latitude and longitude, and how to use coordinates to find places on a map!
Latitudes are imaginary lines numbered from 0° to 90° North and 90° South. Important latitudes include the Equator, Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn (also called the tropics), and the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle (also called the polar circles). These latitudes roughly tell us the climate in different parts of the world, based on the amount of direct sunlight each zone gets.
Longitudes are imaginary lines numbered from 0° to 180° West and 180° East. Longitudes help define time zones. Important longitudes include the Prime Meridian, which marks the reference time zone called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). All other time zones are measured relative to GMT
The latitude and longitude position of any place on earth is called its coordinates, with the latitude shown first, and the longitude shown second. Each place on Earth has its own unique set of coordinates, made up of a latitude and longitude, and so if you know a place’s coordinates, you can find it on a map.
So come look at longitudes and latitudes, and let’s find some mystery places using only their coordinates!
