The Book of Mormon begins with the prophet Lehi being commissioned by the Lord to preach repentance to the Jews in Jerusalem. The populace of Jerusalem believed itself to be the chosen people of the Lord, but they failed to keep the Lord’s commandments. They rejected and sought the lives of Lehi and the prophets, many being tortured and put to death. The Lord warned Lehi to flee into the wilderness and eventually covenanted to him a promised land (eventually known as America). The Lehites were guided there by the Lord-founding one of the greatest nations in the world’s history on the teachings in a book of scripture known as the Brass Plates.
The history of our modern civilization is a perfect parallel. Our history begins in the blackness of the Dark Ages with great men and women of character standing for ancient truths found in scripture. They stood alone, sustained by the Lord, against an apostate religious darkness that had covered the earth for centuries and claimed to speak for God.
These Reformers were hunted, driven, and martyred for the testimony of Christ and His Scripture. Groups were led by God to the New World and given direction to keep the covenant of this land, which is, that all those who possess it will serve the Lord Jesus Christ or they will be swept off. These pilgrims, refugees, and covenanters founded one of the greatest nations in the world’s history upon the teachings found in the Bible.
Learning the true stories of men and women who laid down their lives so we could have the scriptures today gives us a deeper appreciation for the records we have!

My 4 th great grandparents were the Waldesians that fled the armies of the King. Refusing to convert they were known as “ Keepers of the Word” They fled with the written gospel to the mountains of Piedmont Italy. My husbands 4 th great grandfather was the first to be baptized by Lorenzo Snow. He came directly to my grandparents and they were baptized. They left Everything to come to Utah. Sacrificed in so many ways so I have the blessings to raise my family here in the west surrounded by followers and defenders of faith.

I think some parents don’t want their kids to know all the graphic, ugly, uncomfortable stuff that so many people went through. Parents want to protect their kids from those things. I am one of those parents. My parents were the same way with me. My grandfather, who served in WW 2 was the same way. He wouldn’t talk about his experiences in the war. He actually hid it from us. So I get how important it is to help our children know that freedom isn’t free. But how much of the gory details do they really need to hear about? It may just scare to no end.

It may be tough to explore, but freedom matters! The details help me to better understand what is going on now.

How can your children possibly appreciate how blessed we are because of the incredible sacrifices thousands have made for the faith and to preserve and bring us scriptures if they don't know these stories? I think too many of us take the scriptures for granted.

Play the game, "A Plague Tale: Innocence" on Xbox One Playstation 4 or 5. You'll get a sense of the terrible circumstances of the 14th century in France, the plague, the inquisitions, the 100 Years' War with the English... death and misery and disease everywhere. I can't imagine how it must have been.

What can be gleaned from the learning of the Jews in the fight to obtain the Jewish scriptures?

    • @GMMXX80
      @GMMXX80 8 месяцев назад +3

I'm presently studying the Deuteronomists and the time of King Josiah and how the doctrines had been changed. That there potentially could have been a Jewish belief in multiple Gods that King Josiah saw inevitably as Paganism he tried to flush out from the Church. He wasn't a religious leader but a political leader and by his order had gotten rid of the shady beliefs creeping into Jewish culture and teachings, but in doing so lost important things. I think Lehi had access to the scripture of that time but knew where he was leaving to start a new world, did he want to take that corrupt teaching with him? So, once they've escaped the city of Jerusalem that wants Lehi murdered, Nephi and his brothers are sent back for what? To obtain the brass plates from Laban, why? For two purposes:
      1) Its going to influence how the Nephites are going to keep their record. They're not going to record on parchment paper that's going to decay, they going to scribe them on brass plates.
      2) Those brass plates had been in Labans greedy old hands locked in a Treasury for how long? Did you ever notice how specific the Book of Mormon is and how those who don't agree with Latter-day Saints in the authenticity of the Book of Mormon because it mentions Jesus by name and has similar passages to the New Testament in Nephis day? While doctrine is being flushed and scrubbed away from Jewish teachings that had been corrupted, Labans had these dusty old plates locked up in a Treasury, for exactly how long we dont know. We only know that Laban was greedy and really well off, that he had them and they were needed to take to the New World. They were untouched by reforming hands and kept unaltered for Lehi and his family to take with them to teach their posterity with. Laban and Lemuel were obviously religious men, but what, let's call it, denomination of Judaism did they follow? They believed anyone that believed contrary to the Judaism Lamen and Lemuel knew should be put to death and Nephi was acting contrary to the God they believed they knew.
There was a LOT significance for obtaining the plates from Laban, even to the point of taking his life to obtain them, they were uncorrupted and unchanged and God could start a new and give attention by eventually sending out missionaries to the lamanites (broadly speaking) to preach the gospel from a pure Old Testament book up to Isaiah. There's a lot of significance in understanding Jeremiah and King Josiah and why they're mentioned in the Book of Mormon and the study of the Deuteronomists people are thinking is critical to understanding that time. There's a lot in that first chapter alone to explain a lot of the issues of Judaism in Jesus' day and why he had the complications he had and why Christianity is so messed up today and Judaism is struggling now. The devil has an immense amount of power and has done quite a number on the Gospel and crushing and shattering it as Adam originally knew it. So much so that as Elder Uchdorf has taught, the Restoration is an ongoing process and that's the result of every time Satan causes an Apostacy, he really shatters it. We're facing Apostacy in the Church today, but may not have achieved that Great Apostacy status that had the prophets and apostles killed in Jesus day

Laman and Lemuel would have subscribed to the mode of thought reformed by King Josiah that brought the the Kingdoms in a monotheiatic viewpoint. The Book of Nephi clearly seems to argue against that viewpoint as does the Book of Mormon when it describes how Jesus is the Father and the Son, which at first glance sounds monotheiatic, but isn't, especially when Jesus arrived in 3 Nephi as The Father introducing the Son, the Book of Mormon doesn't teach the Trinity or Monotheism

Great insights on the importance of the brass plates. One nuance I noticed recently* about the brass plates is that they were a current and presently maintained record of the people at Jerusalem.
Nephi tells us that his father left Jerusalem at "the commencement of the first year of the reign of Zedekiah" in 1 Nephi 1:4. Nephi also tells us in 1 Nephi 5: 11-13 that they included "a record of the Jews from the beginning, even down to the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah." So the plates were a scriptural and historical record that was currently being kept up to date.
It seems that the Lord preserved these plates, not just so Lehi's family would have the scriptures and a source of written language, but to save these priceless scriptures themselves from alterations being made (or from being destroyed when Babylon pillaged and destroyed Jerusalem). And, of course, so some of them could come forth to us in the Book of Mormon to teach us about Christ.
      * I learned this nuance from An Engineer's Journey Through The Book of Mormon (@AnEngineersJourneythruth-xz6bw). Highly recommend checking out that channel, not enough people have seen it, and it's a great way to approach studying the Book of Mormon.

You bring up a great question, what is the point of Mormon giving us an abridgment of information for us in the last days?
I think the reformation period can be seen as a definite type and shadow, but by the time the Book of Mormon gets revealed those events are already “well-known” and 400 years old and even older in our generation. So to liken the scriptures to our day, but only apply it to events 600 years ago, I don’t think was the primary intention of why we are given this story.
If we understand the Book of Mormon tells the end from the beginning there are many clues that point the true intention of the scriptures were meant to describe characters and events that would happen in the last days.
For an example, you had a great slide on how does the BoM begin. I might add temple worship was a huge idol among the covenant people as well and by all accounts, Laman and Lemuel believed the people of Jerusalem were a righteous people, because they followed their leaders and kept all the laws, etc.
In short, events kick off by many prophets rising up (including Jeremiah) who testify that you aren’t as good as you think you are and even though you are the chosen people, if you don’t repent you will be utterly destroyed. Jeremiah debunks their temple worship when the Lord tells him in Jeremiah 7, “2 Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord. 3 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. 4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these.” And Lehi clearly is referring to it when he uses the great and spacious analogy. Then several families wake up to their situation, and commence on an exodus to the promised land. It is my belief from my studies that this is a future event that we will see - our end from the very beginning of the BoM.

@JosephSmithFoundation it's difficult to share something so general. I was very surprised to hear the claim that this history has been hidden. It simply hasn't. I wasn't meaning to insult American education but I was merely concluding that if it's hidden history there, that's down to the system there.

@@JosephSmithFoundation The reason this history has been de-emphasized in American education was the institutional power the Ellis Island people got after WW 2. They wanted and have succeeded in de-Anglo ing of America. The same was done in Canada, hence their flag change in the 80's.

You worry me. You keep surmising things that aren't supported by The Book of Mormon or other scripture. There is no indication that Lehi told his sons to barter the family wealth for the brass plates. Granted, it's possible, but the record equally implies it could have been Nephi's idea.
You lose credibility with your audience this way.
    Millions murdered? That's an exaggeration.
