Iz's funeral was the greatest turnout for a funeral since the last king of Hawaii. Many celebrities, politicians, friends and fans were there. The Governor was there. He cried.
I was there. It was incredible!
I wish I was born back then so I could've been there

The last part with everyone in the water was his funeral when they scattered his ashes among the surf

Very true. I’m an asshole and ruthless but when my little daughter plays this song and starts sweetly dancing to it I can feel the years of anger and hatred melt away and I have a deep feeling of love and care for others.
I love Judy Garland‘s original of this song, but I have to tell you that Iz’s Version is my favorite! The man was blessed with a wonderful voice. Another life gone too soon!

there's something pure about stripping back a song to just the vocals and minimal instrumentation that makes a really good song shine far beyond what it first appears.
just his voice and his ukulele was all he needed to make what is usually a generously over played and over produced song into something new and beautiful. It gave it more meaning than the original really had, imo.

Thanks for the welcome! (this is my desktop account...actually found this channel watching on Roku). I grew up with this song, as well; Wizard of Oz would usually come on once a year and my entire family would sit and watch. As for Bruddah Iz, I was stationed on a ship in Pearl Harbor for nearly 4-years...fell in love with Hawai'i, the people, the culture, and, most especially, the music.
Love Israel. Most beautiful rendition ever. Love my ukes. I have three. The world lost a beautiful soul.
His voice is smooth; emotionally charged, but subtly so. One of my favorite songs & renditions of said song.

I'm a Vet, sometimes when I get depressed or super overwhelmed/anxious my go to song is this one, his version calms me 🤷♂️ it's his voice or something but it helps.

The first time I heard of him was when we visited Hawaii. I fell in love with his voice and purchased his CD ... that brings back that feeling of peace and beauty! ...

IZ is an inspiration and was loved by all. I was at Makua when they spread his ashes from the Hokule'a. Cars stopped along the 2 lane road leading to Ka'ena bringing traffic to a stand-still. Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. An incredible celebration of life for an incredible man!!

I think having a few lines, and the melody, from the song, "What a Wonderful World" put it over the top. It was a beautiful blending of both songs.

This has long been my favorite version of over the rainbow! So sad to have lost Iz so early in his life.
Iz was scheduled for bariatric surgery but succumbed to pulmonary issues before he could have the surgery. At the end of the clip you see the islanders spreading his ashes in the sea so he'll always be with us. This is played at many weddings!! A wonderful tenor voice lost to us way too soon.
This version of the song is my ULTIMATE FAVORITE!!!! I first heard it when Dr. Green passed away in the program ER in the USA. Then again in the movie Finding Forrester with Sean Connery.

We spent some time on Kauai shooting a couple episodes, The most laid back place in the world! Even the cops flash you a hang loose hand sign when they drive by you! It is one of my favorite places!!

The Wizard of Oz was my brother Craig''s favorite movie and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" his favorite song. He was born with Down's Syndrome. Craig passed of natural causes in 2017. I admit I'm tearing up right now.

The first time I heard this was on the episode of ER when Dr. Mark Greene died. It blew me away, still does!
It’s rare when a song used in the ending episode of some dramatic film or show is as perfect as that. Originally the film “Birdies” (Henry Winkler Sally Field) concluded with the song ‘Carry on My Wayward Son...’. It was like what IZ’s song did for ER. On television in later years the Kansas song was removed entirely. The song that replaced it was a giant let down.
Birdies is a poignant and valuable film. Acting quality is A+ !

@@beedeegee9374CORRECTION...it’s on me! The movie is called HEROES. Character driven, and was made in the 1977.
Main thing is title is “Heroes” with Henry Winkler & the flying nun.
Story opens up with Winkler escaping from some sort of treatment facility, geared for mental health issues.
Long story short, he’s trying to find buddies he served with for his personal reasons. The facility he escaped from was in the east, and he ends up traveling cross country.

This is gorgeous but you also should listen to the version by another singer who left us too soon, at 33 years of age. Eva Cassidy’s version is amazing and it was her own arrangement.

Of interest: Israel’s parents were originally from Ni’ihau, the most northwestern ofthe inhabited Hawaiian islands. It was purchased by Elizabeth Hutcheson Sinclair, a Scotswoman, from the Hawaiian kingdom, in 1864, for $10,000. Since it was already inhabited, she was obligated by the King, to look after the residents. Although it is fairly arid, the residents are mostly employed in the cattle industry. It is the only island where native Hawaiian language is the principal one spoken. (Although it is supposed to be one of the two official languages, most everyone else speaks English.). Israel’s original group was founded by his older brother Skippy, and several others on Oahu as the Makaha Sons of Niihau. So Scotswoman Sinclair has had a crucial role in the preservation of Hawaiian language and culture.
