Using older mobiles for APRS is challenging, but as you say, fun. There is real need for hams to fill in the map with APRS base station digipeaters and iGates
Thank you Steve. I have the DigiPi and have set it up several times, but I was really never sure about connectivity since Craig generally shows it connected to a 705. You have shown me "the way". I really do appreciate your videos. 73,
Digirig Mobiles are my go-to sound card and PTT control boxen for APRS. Denis's support is outstanding and his products are top-notch, and a lot cheaper than, say, a SignaLink. I buy Digirig shielded and choked cables too. Other than figuring out how to properly configure Direwolf setting up a Retevis RT95 digipeater was almost plug-and-play because the little box and the cables Just Worked.
I have to figure out a good test - I'm guessing in an area where there is no APRS traffic "forever" is a good answer, but we need more APRS usage and its still too difficult to grok for most people.
weird. I wish yaesu would publish parts specs for discontinued models. Check ebay for models from that vintage and cross your fingers. I just had to get a set of rotary encoders for another yaesu radio I'm fixing up. $14 on ebay.
I noticed after you hit Initialize (7:31) your baud rate went back to 115200. I assume that is the baud rate the digirig is configured to work at. Is it 38400 or 115200? Also your Rig number and Device file changed. Could you clarify the setting you used to make the Digirig to work? I have a Yaesu FT2800M that I am considering doing exactly what you have done here with Digipi and all those parts. Thanks again for the APRS content.
Hey Brian, sorry about the confusion there. Those are for cat control settings and this radio doesn't support cat control. I could have been more clear about it, but I forgot since it doesn't apply. The APRS is sent as audio and the digirig injects the PTT for you.
here is what I want to do...use a Motorola vhf mobile connected Argent systems data box connected to a Android computer I have the Jeep wrangler JL doing APRS
"manpack", dude just call it a purse. It won't be dignified but still better than being so insecure you feel the need to add "man" in front of a word to make it sound less girly. Sorry
I didn't invent the term... and if I did invent a new term nobody would find the video... or all the ladies would come and watch and be angry that I stole their word. Its not my language, I just use it.
Did the 3ah Bioenno cost more than the radio? The same Pi gets the same address every time in the shack so I use IP address, not digipi.local, which is problematic. Since the FT90 does not have CAT control, a Digirig Lite would be a little cheaper.
The bioenno was a gift from another ham, but yeah, they are pretty much the price I paid for the radio. Both are examples of being at the right place at the right time and realizing it (aka luck) Yeah, its a DNS problem more than a digipi problem on "digipi.local", IP is more reliable to use, but not as friendly as the name. Yeah, digirig lite would be a great idea - there is a cabling mess in my future that I'm not happy about.
Really cool setup and a cool mini dual bander!! Thank TO
You bet!

Sub $200 is still a bit expensive for my tastes... I'm still looking for "the best way" and having fun trying.
APRS = One of my favorite modes 👍 Great video.
I think we need to do a live stream on it!
Thank you Steve. I have the DigiPi and have set it up several times, but I was really never sure about connectivity since Craig generally shows it connected to a 705. You have shown me "the way". I really do appreciate your videos. 73,
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
I just got my hands on an FT-90 to set up an Allstar link for our clubs repeater using a Signal Link. Thanks for this video.
Nice, let me know how it goes and keep that puppy cool!

I agree, Denis is top notch!
Dude, this *may* just be the solution I need for APRS.
It would fit in your 705 bag!
That's amazing I would love to see the GPS integration into the digipi thanks for the great videos
We did GPS on a Nuggets episode with Craig... that bag is getting full (mostly of overly long cables).
Very cool setup! Looking forward to part 3 ! Thanks TO
Thanks for watching!
That's a sweet little setup!
Stay tuned, it gets better!
yes.. I used it with a kpc-3 and an old motorola GPS in an ammo can for aprs during the 80 mile half iron man bike race . ae4xo
I have a KPC-3 project coming up too! That looks like more "it doesn't have to be fun to be fun" type stuff.
@@temporarilyoffline sweet
Man that's awesome! You do some cool stuff. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and can't wait to see how long that 3 amp battery will last. KO4HPC 73

Cool messaging system, Nice Work, tnx Man!
Its a fun project, thanks for watching!
Nice video! I still like the Vero! 73
Yeah, the vero makes this whole thing much easier.
Great job Steve! 10:47 (I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who says this. LOL) 73
Everyday! Its the only way I know I'm getting the right answers!
My wife says that to me. "Great job honey, now you can talk to yourself on the radio" LOL!!
I need to get into some digital modes eventually.
What radio do you have?
@@temporarilyoffline I have an FT-991A and FTM-200DR in my shack connected to my 12V power supply, and FT-891 and FTM-500DR in my truck.
@@CURTIS-W5CER All of those radios have data ports on the rear. Happy to share some knowledge.
@@temporarilyoffline I'm a network guy at my job, but I have no idea how to even get started with digital in ham radio.
@@CURTIS-W5CER you'll pick it up quick, I've got a ton of videos on it too
Cool. I haven't had my FT90 in service since two cars ago...
Sounds like its time! If not, I know a guy that wants one.
I need to get my FT-90 fixed, it has a bad ext speaker jack, it affects all the audio.😢 I love that little radio...

Yep what I am working on right now
Sweet. Let me know if you need any help with it!
Nice. If ts weren't a one off, it would almost be worth designing a HAT.
Craig and his crew have figured that out: ruclips.net/video/MkEA8i8qyRg/видео.html
Does anybody knows if digirig is compatible with Qyt KT8900D to make it APRS or digital operative?
I believe it's possible, but you might need to make your own cable for it.
@@temporarilyoffline that is what I thought. Thanks.
what handheld is that you are using for aprs?
The Vero VR-N76, I have a ton of videos on that one. Its my new "best bang for the buck" HT

That would be pretty cool! If the radio can transmit on 144.39, the rest is just making the right interface cable
And this is why we don't throw out cables and adapters!
I had to hunt for these, this proves it works, so I need to find the right cables and such
@@temporarilyoffline I believe Anker or Amazon sells a USB-A to Micro cable.
That great ! So much fun you can have with that. You can make your self in China again ! 73

webchat FTW! 😅
Works great
