There is a reason WHY Sandman still rocks some 30 years later...it might sound simple but it has alot of complex beat tempo changes. Even though he got it 96 - 98% right for gods sake he ONLY listened to it " 1 " time. I cant remember my phone number let alone reproducing a song from hearing it once.
I'm not a drummer, I never touched drums in my life, but still I enjoyed this extremely. I just love to see people who know how to do something to it and break it down. I appreciate you!
My favorite thing about this is how Larnell loosens up and just starts doing these tight fills and his own little kick runs. It's great. A metal drummer would be tempted to use sheer power and timing (which Ulrich does in the recording) but Larnell shows there's more than one way. Music is great.
Yo Jarvis my friend, I love your vibes! Got hooked on your channel through the one and only Harry Mack (GOAT ofc) reactions. Have you seen Larnell's first viral drumeo video? the one where he comes up with the drum section to a song after listening just a couple times? was looking for a reaction to that on your channel a few days ago actually and was bummed not to find it. However, maybe my chances got better now that you reacted to this? :P Cheers from Germany!
Aye!!!!! Appreciate you. I haven't but I'll check it out and post it soon Love his playing and his approach top everything. Thanks for the comment and positive vibes!
I've watched the original video and Larnell is a LEGEND! Damn! To be honest i've never listen or watch Larnell before the original video and right from the start i've noticed the kind of drummer he is, humble, has an awesome ear and the guy is very cool. It's unusual to see black guys liking or even playing Metal music, but he killed it (and no! I don't care if he missed some parts, he just took over and made the song his own and that is awesome!)! LEGEND indeed! 1000% respect!
I thoroughly enjoy listening to Larnell, but really appreciate your reaction. As a non-musician, this is like watching a quarterback be a announcer-commentater for a football game.
This is the third time I’ve watched this on various channels and just noticed that he looks at each component as he hears it- like he’s visualizing playing- awesome
Yo dude, I never heard anyone breakdown the song like that before (also never watched drum videos) and then you are calling it out before him on a few.... thats sick man, you do that in videos? #TheCommentsWillAlwaysLetYaKnowBruh! LOL Ain't that the truth. Larnell Lewis is such a top-notch human being as well as being a top-of-the-world drummer. #Lewis2024 ?! Anyone in the comments picking apart anything that's not precise to the recording *after one listen* needs to re-evaluate their existence as far as I'm concerned btw. This is crazy impressive. :)

He even played with Snarky Puppy. He only had recordings on his cellphone and listened to it on the flight over (8 recordings total). As soon as he landed he went unto the studio and played it. There's a documentary on it. ruclips.net/video/5p5sEewsYNM/видео.html
Just saw you reacted to this. Funny enough, this was the first song I ever learned on drums. Larnell is amazing, so I was REALLY intrigued when I first watched this. Considering he's not exactly a metal player, and never even heard the song before....he absolutely killed it. It was cool to see some of your thought process during the listen through as well. Awesome as always man. Still gotta jump on your recent HMack reaction as well. As usual, much love.
The most fascinating part by far was watching him during active listening. He’s amazing and deserves so much more recognition.. and on top of everything he seems like the most down to earth and humble person.
I don't know if you have ever heard him play with Snarky Puppy, but he joined the band in Amsterdam for the first time for a recording of an album and he learnt most of the songs on the flight over. One in particular I really love is Lingus, what he does in that is mind blowing, working and playing off of Corey Henry in that solo was sublime.
As much as I enjoyed his performance, my favorite part of his video is watching him listen to the song. It felt less like watching him memorize his part and more like he was trying to understand _why_ Lars did what he did. Like the drumming equivalent of method acting. I liked this reaction because you gave a lot of attention to this part and you explained what a push is, and that helps us non-drummers
Larnell fixing his his glasses a half dozen times and fixing the mic while playing and not missing a beat is like pimping the home run trot, or doing the Deion strutting to the end zone.
I am now I love with this song lately. I have watched the original video 3 times now. And am now looking at other people's reactions to it. I play this song daily lately just love it.
I would not want to offend anybody, but he does that at least as good as Lars, maybe better. We have Larnell, we don't have Ediie van Halen, not Freddie Mercury. Who has the bass player?
That is one amazing guy. I have heard this song 1000 times and I couldn't get every part. His ability to listen to songs flying to a studio and then play is wild. I was thinking I would love to see him try Subdivisions by Rush.
Larnell is very impressive. I've watched his video many times. I got even more from your reaction. Thank _You_ for doing this. Small 'nit-picks' about your intro to Larnell at 1:40. It was Snarky Puppy's "We Like it Here" album. Larnell says at the start of his earlier _Larnell Lewis Hears A Song Once And Plays It Perfectly_ that he knew 2 songs before getting on the airplane, so 'learned' (aka composed) drums for, at least, 6 songs on the 7½hour transatlantic flight. Then the recording for the album was over 4 days for 8 songs. Larnell and Snarky Puppy rehearsed during each day (I assume two songs each day), then recorded several takes with the studio audience each evening. Then picked the best for the album. So Larnell and Snarky Puppy ran through his drum composition, and rehearsed every song before recording. That's still ridiculously impressive, but at least it sounds humanly possible to reach the quality they achieved. Best Wishes. ☮
Jarvis, every once in awhile while I was listening to KLOVE a brand new song would "debut" while I was on my drums, so I'd give it a shot, and I was always amazed how close I got to what was being played just by anticipating what the drummer was about to do by listening to the rest of the band. Larnell treated this the same way, counting and breaking it down, even analyzing key changes and solo placement...and of course nailing it with technical proficiency!!!
This is my 3rd reaction watch after watching the original. Simply amazing. It's funny how people say this song is long, which it is, but 'In a Gadda da Vida' is I think twice as long as this.
Awesome reaction video. You catch things before or at the same time. Only just learned of Larnell today, the mans a freak.. I wish I had his talent, very few are so blessed. Most could only hope for such by gods good grace.
The timing on that intro is sooooooo difficult, I was gonna lose it if he nailed that first try. His fills are absolutely insane though, that was dope! (Also, Harry Mack is the goat!)
A very natural, honest appreciation from a humble drummer that has just witnessed a musician that has mastered his craft.. kudos to you mate.. well done.. I dig your vibe…
It's nice to see the positive analysis of Larnell's amazing analysis, itself a pleasure to watch. Your analysis was a refreshing after watching a metal-head drummer's dismissive observation of Larnell's process and dubiousness of that Larnell had never heard Enter Sandman. Ridiculous. Ill bet that same metal-head is utterly unfamiliar with Fusion standards that are classics on the Fusion side. I've been playing music for over 50 years and there's all sorts of things I've never heard. It's a reason to keep listening. Nobody's heard everything. I don't care who you are. It just isn't possible. There's more music accumulated than any one person could ever hear in their entire lifetime even if they never stopped. I like Metal, but some Metal-heads flirt with stoopid too vigorously. Also, the production on Larnell's drums is beautiful.
Is it just me, yet how is Jarvis not impressed with the actual song itself.. if he never heard it or heard it once? I have heard Enter Sandman dozens, maybe a hundred times and even watching various musicians comment on this video, I find the song so compelling even with three layers of dissection; that how good a listen the song itself is seems irrelevant to Jarvis, makes it hard for me to enjoy this commentary.
Bro, watch Junna Japanese girl do cover Dragonforce songs and Babymetal songs, and also watch her play drum with her band TRiDENT-Japan(Kakumei) songs Voltage, No Regret, Utopia, before she left the band... :)
