  • We were having problems at the track last event. Colin thinks its the center differential due to the wheels locking up after we already replaced the rear diff.

Same as my hatch Impreza clunks front and rear on hard turns and today on a rainy morning it would push the front out a bit when going hard un round abouts. Will try LSD additive first and then May order a new one.

No shop yet on the 20x32 pad, so ya do what ya gotta do! Got it up on stands on a toasty Winter afternoon.
So this is the 2004 Impreza NA manual tranny I have with what I thought was torque bind from the center diff viscous coupler. It's still looking like the coupler I guess as the tapping noise while in the air is only for brief moments of gear changes while goosing it. Below is what I found. Have you had similar? I hate throwing parts and labor at anything until I know the actual issue.
Any suggestions to test it while I have it up off all fours?
    1. Transaxle is leaking gear oil where the Viscous center diff output end is, at the very end of the transaxle rear cap near where the rod for the gear shift attaches to tranny. This leak and tapping noise just developed on a recent 400 mile mountain Interstate trip with a full passenger load. Found the gear oil 1.5 quarts low upon return, and oil slung down the center of the car's underbody.
    2. All CV axle ends look/feel fine, front and back.
    3. Rear driveshaft looks/feels good.
    4. Run test: 10 minutes. Some tapping noise between gear transitions when goosing it, not grinding. No tapping or binding or noises from any wheel, axle or driveshaft in all gears up to 3000rpm while steady/cruising, or while turning or braking.
Leak location lost a lot more lube during run test. Sitting leak rate 1 drop every 5 to 7 minutes. Running leak rate 1+ drop every 1 to 2 minutes.
Would you say the center diff is toast and that should fix the tapping binding noise?

Hey there i have a 5-speed manual 2004 Impreza Outback N/A that i bought for my son as a first car. Test drove it for 500 miles and it seemed fine. Tagged it for legal driving and 200 miles later i have some kind of binding click noise that happens randomly, but more often when the tires are operating on muddy snow terrain. I can feel the clicking in the stick shift handle.
The tranny gear oil was about 1.75 qts low. I filled it and sound is a little less present but still present.
Is the center differential lubed by the same gear oil reservoir as the manual transmission?
What do you suggest to do? Thanks!

How do you remove the bearing race that's stuck in the transmission? The race that goes around that little bearing on the shaft

Hi very cool video you got here! I am also getting into subarus right now and I have 07 and 02 impreza Both are 2.5l the bugeye is rs model and 07 is regular. I will be preparing both of them for ice racing. One thing tho I've been trying to figure out but wasn't able to and it's how much power does the center diff sends to the front and how much to the rear. I've spent hours on researching this and was not able to find the answer. Would you happen to know anything about it?

The clunking/popping while turning would be in either direction if its for sure the center diff?

I just changed the center Diff in a 2010 Subaru Outback 2.5L with 6-speed MT. But I didn't know what to use for gear oil. I originally tried two quarts of 75-90 full synthetic with nonslip additive. it wasn't enough to reach the dipstick so I double-checked the manual. I was actually supposed to use 3.9 quarts and one video said not to use additive. So I drained the 2 quarts of gear oil with additive but I think some went into the differential at the back of the transmission. anyways I put in 3.9Qt of 80-90 without the additive. After driving on the highway I still get the torque bind problem. I'm wondering if it might be from the initial additive or maybe the rebuild center diff is no good? Any Ideas?

This is my issue after the 6spd swap. If it’s that easy to do then hell I’ll do it myself. This is the 5spd?

Hello did you find out by any chance? I have a 2020 wrx and I've been told by shop that to replace the center differential I need to replace the whole transmission because on the wrx the center differential is stuck to the tranny.
