what I like most is that Bulma understood that Goku was the key, she knew enough about Goku to know he would find a way to destroy the Androids even to go through all the trouble of building a time machine. The Legendary warrior Son Goku always gave the Z warriors hope because Goku never showed fear but became more fierce and excited during a difficult fight to win or find the way to win even against seemingly impossible odds.

Straight facts. Everyone always calls it plot armor and resort to riding vegetas dick, but gokus the only one who never folds or throws a tantrum whenever an opponent is stronger than him. Vegeta literally enjoys beating on people weaker than him and everyone else really don't like to fight like goku does.

In the end it was Gohan, trunks’ master that actually won the day vs Cell!
The history of Trunks is where fear and a sense of hopeless really set in for me as a kid. Frieza was and is beyond horrible and there were those moments of what if Goku can't win, but with the androids it was deeper. Frieza is an organic being with limitless potential and is as evil as they come however he could at least feel fear. But 17 and 18 were just something else. No fear, no tiring, and absolutely relentless. Seeing how trunks disposed of Frieza with ease in contrast to not being able to harm the Androids at all was just insane. Just to think the twins were turned into that type of threat just by using science and technology. No magic, no limitless potential due to biology and training, just science and technology.
Yeah, they are cyborgs. I think it was an error in translation. This is why they killed their master. If I remember correctly, they never wanted to be worked on - but it happened. I can't wait for when she sees Trunks kill the androids

I love Future Gohan, and the was DBZ Kakarot added the extra stuff before his death, how he didn’t go out without giving it his absolute all, encapsulates this Gohan. He knew he couldn’t win, but he didn’t allow himself to doubt, he fought with the intent of dying. Someone with nothing to lose is always the hardest to beat.

It’s even more tragic in the Manga bc he wasn’t as strong as he was in the anime, 17 kills him in the manga instead of both androids in the anime
Something more tragic about the game version, even if he killed 17 and 18 with that Kamehameha, he probably still would’ve died. He was out of ki and unleashed a massive burst of power, he likely converted his life force into ki the same way Vegeta did against Boo. Gohan knew he would die but still chose to try and die in a way that would benefit everyone
What sucks is Trunks never knows peace for long. Numerous times he has it taken away from him, and he will die for the cause to save everyone. Still in the end he loses everything... such a sad tragic warrior story.

I think what made this scene sad and haunting is that when other characters died, there was a reason for it, like when Piccolo died, it was to protect the son of his rival that later became his friend. There are other countless examples like this with other characters.
But Gohan here... he died for nothing.
It wasn't some heroic sacrifice or sentimental goodbye of any kind; he was just a broken, battered corpse found face-down in a puddle. He was killed out of cold blood for no reason, other than the android's desire to take out their sadistic violent tendencies on anyone they see. Being one of the last ones alive, he gave it everything he had, but they were just too powerful. Stuff is depressing as hell when you think about it. The gloomy atmosphere and music make it all the more emotional.

I wouldn’t say he died for nothing. Gohan knew that there would be someone stronger than him if he dies. Gohan saw Trunks’ potential just like any master would. So yes he died a gruesome death but he paved a way forward for Trunks.
that environment is exactly why future trunks is the best most heroic and most inspiring character besides goku

It’s not the rage that turns them super Saiyan. As in gokus words, It’s the feeling of loss in response to a “need.” Trunks and goku only turned super Saiyan when their best friends died. Vegeta turned super Saiyan because he felt the loss of his legacy, his pride, his destiny.
In Goku's words? As if Goku would know just because he happened to reach it. Explain Gohan, Goten, and Trunks reaching SSJ without loss.
@@deckzone3000 I did explain it buddy. Read one more time. Gohan became super Saiyan by envisioning cell killing all of his friends and family when they were training in the hyperbolic time chamber. Gohan also became super Saiyan 2 when cell killed android 16. Even future gohan didn’t become super Saiyan until the entire earths defense force were killed.

I was watching this episode with some of my friends and from " Yeah Gohan , kick they're butts you can do this " we all turned to complete silence , utter shock and crying and about Vegeta yes he is arrogant and proud but he never once backed down from a fight even when he knew that his opponent is stronger . I don't know how we god Dragon ball super to be so lame compared to Dragon ball z but this is what a lot of us grew up with

When this special came out I had only recently discovered Dream Theater so I was *super* stoked to realize they chose them for the soundtrack, which fit surprisingly well. Really glad you guys chose to upload this one. Definitely a tear-jerker.
Oh man I remember first time watching history of trunks on toonami aired in fall 2003 seeing the death of Future gohan ( my favorite version of gohan) it hurt me inside and broke me when i was 8 years old. Man what a childhood i had to experience it was amazing and i missed growing up in 2000s back then we have everything compared to this shitty generation we have today. Future gohan is such a real hero and sacrifice himself like a real saiyan warrior just like his grandpa bardock. trunks is the last hope for the future.

Everytime I see future Gohan die it's heartbreaking out of all the Gohan's this one may be the weakest but he has a heart of gold .
My all-time favorite character Went Out Swinging as a true Sayain Warrior I don't care what anyone says Future Gohan is the best.
The sad part is Chichi lost her only son I can only imagine what she felt when she found out they never showed that in the movie.
And this is a question I always had I think it still would have turned out the same that Trunks survived.
But when 17 was about to deliver what was supposed to be the final blow and 18 insisted she did it instead.
18 is a little bit weaker i believe not by much I wonder if that made a difference by Trunks surviving.

Or maybe the attack was just as strong and Trunk's will to survive kept him alive this time. Or perhaps he just got lucky. But that ki blast should have been enough to wipe him out. Then again, he is Vegeta's son.
Gohan died for TWO reasons:
👉🏽1_ With one arm, it is very difficult to remain constant against TWO opponents, and sooner or later, Gohan would become careless.
👉🏽2_ Gohan realized TOO LATE that Androids hid their true power ALL THE TIME! And when 17 killed Gohan, he revealed that in all their fights, they hadn't used EVEN HALF OF THEIR POWERS.
Remember that Trunks told the Z Warriors that the Androids of the past were stronger. But that is not true! Both those from the past and those from the future have THE SAME POWER... the difference is IN THE WAY THE POWERS ARE USED. In the past, 17 and 18 fight with much more strength, and in the future they don't use their strength much, as they played with the Z Fighters before killing them.
Trunks never found out this detail, because Gohan died before he had time to tell him.
I feel like the reason Gohan knocked trunks out and went in alone is because I feel that Gohan had that feeling that this was going to be the final fight and he didn't want trunks to die yet like he knew that the Androids were going to kill them if they both went
As well as being confident that trunks was going to be the one to destroy them once and for all one day. Taking his place as the futures’ protector.
Also, Gohan probably knew he would eventually become a burden, for Trunks to risk his life in saving(he did the same for Trunks which rendered him armless), and he knew with 1 arm Trunks would have much better chances than him. So he bet it all on either making a miracle like his father always did, or dying and giving Trunks this final push.
It's sad to know that this was Gohan's original fate. Also, even more sad, is that Gohan never got to see Trunks fully transform into a Super Saiyan. 😞

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the history of trunks, I remembered the story when I played it in DBZ: Kakarot.
I've already seen this movie several times as a kid, but seeing it again through her reactions STILL made me tear up after all these years.
Ppl always say how much future trunks went through , but they always forget future Gohan went through a shit ton too and so did bulma . Gohan lost his dad , piccolo and the rest of the Z crew who he was close with. Bulma lost her parents , baby daddy , her best friend in Goku who’s she’s known since her teenage years . Also history of trunks is one of my favorite dragon ball movies. It’s so well done , but yet is prob one of the more sadder movies in anime and has one of the saddest scenes in the show . I’m a huge Gohan so everytime I see that scene I start to cry
Also future chi chi too damn I forgot abt her . She lost her man and her kid (which to me is the worst thing anyone can lose ) and hell by the time the Goku black arc came around by then she coulda lost her father by then too
Still boggles my mind how Gohan couldn't easily surpass the Androids with over a decade of training and possible access to the gravity machine from Bulma.

@@bipstymcbipste5641 Yeah Gohan at least still got them as a teen in the Buu arc. But after multiple beat downs by the Androids and over a decade of training Gohan was still somehow around as strong as Vegeta and Goku when the Androids arrived in the prime timeline.

@@aidenmeckler193 Yeah either that or maybe the excuse that some people have, the idea that Chichi didn't let Gohan train or fight for many years lowered Gohan's stats from where they even were after Namek and then he only started training again later in life.
I dont think gohan fought as much as people thought he did. Gohan is alot more leveled headed in some regards than most Z fighters. He probably didn't jump in at every attack the androids did because he knew for a fact that he would need to be a super saiyan to even put up a decent fight. He probably only fought the andriods a handful of times and probably bailed out at soon as things got too hot for him. He never fought to a near death point because he knew if he got to that point no one was gonna bail him out
I'm not sure if you will do it but the other movie that hits hard like this one is Dragon ball GT a Hero's legacy, these two specials still draw out the emotions from me and would love to see them get more love ❤️

The History of Trunks is my second favorite DBZ movie. That moment when Trunks goes Super Saiyan for the first time is always a chilling, gut-punching, and teary-eyed experience all at the same time. I loved both of your reactions to it.
The key to Super Saiyan transformation, pure primal rage
It shouldn’t be too much of a spoiler but Goku later explains the prerequisites of becoming a Super Saiyan. It comes to a time of need, not want, and an emotional trigger that just causes you to snap and let it all go (and obviously a power threshold has to be met first above all).
Dragon Ball is pretty crazy anime. Since episode 1 we are actually watching parallel/alternative universe of Dragon Ball because THIS IS the main original universe where everyone dies.. So basically Trunks is the main character of whole Dragon Ball because he is the only one who survived.
Cells timeline is original timeline where trunks use a remote to kill androids and he was about to go to past tell everyone he defeated the androids but cell ambush him and takes his time machine to our timeline
This is the kind of emotion, feeling, tension, drama, action, the awesome fights, seriousness, story telling, filler, music, the group effort and more that is missing in modern DBS. The exception to this is the new DBS movie DBS Super Hero which is heading in the right direction, but as of this moment, there is nothing in the new gen DB universe that tops DBZ. Crazy bc it's "just" a cartoon / anime, but the pain of loss and more can still be felt through its picture.

@@blankblank1257 i mean the Piccolo part can be justified because Shenron is only doing what the Grand Elder Guru did to Gohan and Krillin back on Namek, Piccolo is thousand times stronger than they were and is combined with 1 elite namekian warrior and 1 gifted namekian from the dragon clan the result of that is basically the 2 forms Piccolo got.
The Gohan part for sure had no explanation and it is why Toriyama needs to stop writing movies and focus only in writing arcs and sagas, with Toriyama's style of writing makinng movies don't seem enough and barely have any time to explain things properly
Trunks survived because 18 blew up the nearby area instead of him and stopped 17 from actually killing him.
Fun fact Briefs isn't their last name it's the name of Bulma's Father,they actually don't have a last name.I personally give them the name Garment because all of them have names based on undergarments.

When they said Gohan lost his arm in trunks future it's only up to his shoulder but where his elbow is it's gone
So as for the weather changing. They’re causing lots of explosions and stuff in the air. It changes the humidity levels and when he powered up more the sparks where not from him but a phenomenon called saint elmos fire. Which is basically energy leaking into the air and jumping from atom to atom.
So sometimes when they get serious the weather freaks out. :)

Trunks has one of the most saddest and traumatic backstories in anime. Not as traumatic as Guts from Berzerk tho, he takes the number 1 spot.

Right there. Trunks anguish inside. I cried watching it thinking I don't ever want to feel that pain. Thanksgiving 2016 , my soulmate , the love of my life, my best friend died because his doctors wouldn't listen to us. I felt Trunks' pain , and I feel it every. Single. Day.
Fun fact in the Japanese version the scene where the Androids are chasing down Gohan and trunks in the theme park and the one where they take Gohan's arm, the Androids are completely silent for that entire like 2 minutes. Really emphasizing their Terminator inspired characters. 18 doesn't even say a word when she blows up the theme park. It's not until the dust settles before they speak again. Sorry I had to come back and edit it cuz I also remember the fact in the English version you only hear them talking during that scene while their back is to the camera.
The man that was on the phone at Super World was Sean Schemeal the voice of Goku and King Kai so he was still present in a way.
If this girl was a saiyan, she would have become a super saiyan alongside Trunks.
You know what is even sadder than this, in Cells timeline Trunks gets ambushed and killed by cell after returning from the past to deactive the Androids, that means theres literally no warrior left, everyone is dead including Trunks. But this Trunks manages to get the time chamber power up and forsees what Cell is going to do when Trunks returns to his time, only this time Trunks is ready with the power up an destroys Cell easily.
I forget that Cell voice actor is voicing Gohan in this movie because of all the video game i thought they use Kyle Hebert like in the Buu Saga i did not see this movie in a very long time !!!

This is just so depressing, the way things turned out, in Trunks timeline. All he had to go through, the countless suffering, the tragedy of destruction, that he had to endure, for years upon years of his life. Losing all the Z fighters, and all his friends, and then getting attached to Gohan, being his master and mentor, having to see him dead lying in the rain. This awakened, what was always deep within, Trunks. He became what Gohan had spent years, trying to train him to become. But even this wasn't enough. So Trunks had to go into the past to learn from Goku, how to become strong enough to defeat the Androids. Trunks would have never strong enough to stop their years of rampage on his own.
One thing I don't like about the English dub, although the voice acting itself is really high quality, it's that the directors just can't let a scene breath. They seem to feel the need to CONSTANTLY have someone talking. There are a lot of times where they fill silence with dialogue - any time the character's mouth isn't on screen, they slap in a line of dialogue because there was this prevailing attitude in Western studios that they would somehow lose the attention of the audience if someone wasn't talking.
When the androids approach Gohan in tandem before the final showdown, there's no dialogue. And when Trunks walks towards Gohan's body, it's supposed to be silent until Trunks start screaming. Silence has WEIGHT and drama to it, and I really wish the EN director understood that. We don't need the character to speak to know what they're thinking.
Ah well, at least we've come a long way from the days of 90s English dubbies, where the voice actors didn't even sound like they knew how to emote.
And the soundtrack of the English dub is also cool !!

everytime i see future trunks finding gohans dead body it makes me tear up because of just how sad trunk's voice actor sounds like and how the animation goes with it and how the music gives off a futuristic vibe with the guitar but also such a sad vibe with the other instruments used.
After Gohan got injured he knew he could no longer be the hope for the future that the world needed. Instead of delaying and hiding he chose to fight one last battle with one arm knowing he would probably go down. By doing this act, he sacrificed his injured body to help push Trunks over the edge and become the next super saiyan that the world and the time lines needed in order to survive. His time machine has hope written on it for a reason.

Old but gold, Dragonball Z has always fascinated me because of the seriousness of the characters' facial expressions, always frowning, spiked hair, their character posters, the video cassette picture has bad picture and hissing sound, crabs, mothers, toys...Ahhh, when I think back to the fact that I really liked to draw because of this anime

I know that they did a redub of this scene in the DBZ Kai version, but it pales in comparison to the scene of the initial dub they have done. The music, the eerie atmosphere, and the scream of sheer pain and agony of trunks. The screams of somebody who has pretty much lost everything near and dear to him, it is not shown too clearly, only some glimpse here and there, but something this traumatizing affects you in so many ways. There is a reason why Trunks is not like his father or the other Saiyans. It is crazy that he still had hope inside of him after all of this.
The music that plays when he finds gohans body is the best piece of music in the full dragon ball series

I was watching the Cell Saga the first time it aired on Toonami in college and when I checked out this film I was shocked to hear the soundtrack was mostly from the Dream Theater album Scenes From a Memory that came out a couple of years prior. It was like a double fanboy joygasm to see my favorite band and anime (at the time) merged.
Man, the Gohan scene brings back memories.. it was right here where Trunks officially became my favorite character and carried on all the way up until now. Dude has the most tragic story out of any DB character, almost making you feel hopeless until he finds a way to fight through it. Trunks is the only character that has single handedly made me both cry and jump out of my seat, even within the same episode sometimes. I usually don’t get emotional while watching anime but this franchise has had a fuckin choke-hold on me since I was a kid bro😭

Yeah what I like about the Androids is in the future they were ruthless, but when trunks went back to the past he changed it enough to where the Androids weren't as bad and mostly fought Vegeta because he instigated it. But they weren't really into going around killing people, they just went after Goku because they were like well we ain't got nothing else to do. So at the end of the day trunks still made the future better for that timeline considering he made the Androids less ruthless.
