SMT - When I received my Tyco set back in 1973, it had forms for mail ordering Tyco train items. It had 2 lists of sets; 1 list was for sets with a power pack, the other list was for sets without a power pack. Tyco did offer 2 or 3 different separate - sale power packs at the time; the set pack, a pack with 2 speed controls, & a higher wattage power pack with a single speed control. This allowed the modeler to choose a power pack best suited for his layout. It appears Atlas did subcontract their track to various manufacturers. I think the metal power packs that many manufacturers used in their sets were subcontracted by Model Rectifier Corporation.
Hi, I love Tycho .. I had some when I was a kid and they were very expensive for me and thought of as top of the line..You did well getting this ,It s got class..I love the old ones .. I think about the fun had with them ...again , they weren't cheap in that day...Your presentation is real great and easy to listen to ... very smooth and makes sense.
Although this video is a couple years old I just have to comment. I recently set up my 60's era Tyco train set I had as a boy and decided to give model railroading a try again after 50 plus years (had to wait for electricity to get invented!). It still runs fine! The F7 could use some lube and the headlight was burnt out but otherwise it still runs like it did over 50 years ago. The two biggest problems I ran into was the brass Atlas track needed cleaning to remove oxidation and a couple of the lightbulbs on the engine and passenger cars needed replacing. Oh, and those old style couplers are a pain to de-couple and need to go. Your videos have been my go to source for information during this reintroduction to railroading and serve as my inspiration. Keep up the good work!
I had this very set, I got it for Christmas when I was four years old !, Ran great for years!, It came up missing when my mom and dad got a divorce, otherwise I'd still have it, I have all of my old Tyco Trains a buttload of them , All still like Brand New Condition!!, Always took care of all of my trains!, It's All I ever Had growing up!, Didn't have anything else!,
Good point about tightening down wire connections with the turning direction of the screws..something my Dad taught me when I helped him with wiring projects.
i found 3 tyco train sets in my basement a long time ago, there was many different pieces to it that were lost or missing, only one engine and 2 train cars that weren't hurt. i said i found it a long time ago, this was years ago, i just got it out again today to test it again, doesn't work too well. i'm hoping to get some stuff restored, i heard it was owned by a family member of mine many many years ago. i think it's pretty cool to see this stuff, also great video!
Great video and brings back many memories! I remember growing up in the late 70s and these Tyco train sets and standalone accessories were really popular and abundant in hobby stores of the time. I used to buy lots, unfortunately we never had a big house so I was never able to set up a full board layout!
Really cool train set, the locomotive looks amazing and actually works very well for a 60s engine. Can't wait to see what you are going to do with this train set!
At the time that set was marketed the push was on to take Lionels market so sets came without power pacs in order to entice sales of H.O. trains and take Lionels market. Early H.O.sets were of high quality and a good buy.The problem that arose was the difficulty for small hands put those trains on the track. In the end slot cars came along and the kids loved them and at that time they won.My kids had to have slot cars so Santa gave them slot cars.
Early to mid 60s Tyco set. Almost identical to my first set 51 or so years ago with key differences being mine was PRR though I had the gondola (B&O) my box car was the Khans reefer car and my operating accessory car was the B&M dumping hopper car but outside of that identical. Of course dad and gramps couldn't just let it go with a simple circle of track for their then 7 yo ferroequinologist and had a double oval ( no dead end sidings to tempt a junior Gomez Adams) and a complete town and such so I never actually saw how my set looked in the box.
I have that Exact Track brass I love it verses the expensive nickel silver. And I had that controller on an old train set when I was like 3 to 4 years old. I remember the locomotive it was a gp . something and santafe locomotive red and silver. Wish I had luck finding stuff like this. Or even find people give away old stuff like this. Anything I see has a major price tag on them.
I was going to educate you on when electricity was invented but then you said it was a bad joke so I guess I don't have to. I would love to win that set. I have never had one and I am 57 and was born in 64 and it would be great to have one from the era that I was born in.

SMT Mainline the tyco set you have is from the early 60's tyco as well as many other model train mfg. used atlas track this set is a lower cost set that came with just a circle of track & no power pack if you need any help with older model trans please ask as I have been collecting ho trans since the 60's it thanks there is a
Should do An inventory. Well it’s like this 1.how Many Engines do you Have? 2.How much Rolling Stock do you Have. And Last but not Least How much track do you Have?
LOL, 1960s electricity was not invented yet. Most houses had electricity by the 1920s. Back in the late 1890s only the rich had electricity but it was there. Edison made the light bulb around 1880. It is more likely it did not come with a power pack because of costs and weight for shipping.
Still have my Mantua Tyco trains from the 60's running. Those engines aren't really made for easy servicing. Riveted together and impossible to remove the armature. At least servicing the brushes is easy though after grinding out the rivets.
electricity wasnt invented in the 60s ha ha ha you are a funny bloke very suttle joke enjoy your new find cheers by the way we did have squirrels running around a cylindrical barrel once that gave us some electric power until the squirrels got tired have fun mate

That is a very nice Tyco. There is plenty of room to add realistic details to the engine.
I can't get over the set. . so cool.
I'm happy to see that it still works. It's a good find and looks almost ready to be a Christmas Tree display.

Thats actually really cool that a 50+ year old train working like it was just made other than it being a bit loud its still pretty cook
Cool love these old sets! Happy Modelling! Hans ...

Great find! I love the old Tyco Mantua boxes because of the cool railroad pictures on them!
Good point about tightening down wire connections with the turning direction of the screws..something my Dad taught me when I helped him with wiring projects.
Love the colors on the loco!! Sharp!
What a find, it is a classic. Great content and a wonderful gift. 😊

There was nothing quite like the feeling of getting your first trainset running. Thank your for the memory that is now almost 4 years old mate!

The track looks original. I received a Tyco set for Christmas 1966 and had the exact same type of track.
Interesting how they made em in the 60s. Thanks for sharing this find
always fun opening up train sets. great video SMT
In my opinion Tycho was the HO scale version of Lionel operating cars and accessories even had their own lineup of slot cars
I have three TYCO operating cars, with one in box and the other two in good condition.

Great video! Very cool train set as well!
Nice set. Enjoy your videos.
I was looking at a set made by Varney in the 1950s and nearly bought it a few months back. I regret now passing it up.
That's a nice little train set to bring back the nostalgia from the past.
amazing that tyco mantua train set still works :)

I saw that on you instagram, have fun with that.
Very nice 👌👍
Enjoy that train set I love it and i hope you have enjoy it
great set, nice train for the main layout too.jpj
This set doesn't include a "gon-da-la". Those are in the canals of Venice, Italy. This set contains a "gon-do-la". There is a big difference.
Some of the companies did use Atlas track in the sets.
I’m guessing the set must’ve had steal rails. They might’ve rusted overtime and the previous owner decided to replace the track. Pretty cool set
That's very possible, steel rails are really only good for one things *decoration* in an abandoned scene.
I am from the 1960s it was a good joke. I got to remember it.
An excellent video. ♡ T.E.N.
I love what you do keep doing what you doing

P.S.power pacs were sold separately as were Lionels transformers. Power pacs were much less expensive than Lionels transformers.
Its almost as old as me lol But its not. Great fine on that Thanks for sharing
Wouldn’t it be cheaper to mail one of your many DCC locos with sound if we win? Wink wink. Nudge nudge.
Looks like my father's set. Funny how that f series is still the loco in sets today.
Why shouldn't it be? F units are pretty!

In the 1960's Electricity was invented yet. Love that comment
They made things to last back then .Not the throw away crap of today were you have to buy the same item over and over agian.
Don’t go incomplete go Flonase.
Awesome
I remember we were talking about this on Instagram
My dad had a similar train set. It also used the atlas track. Tyco did not make their own.

That's very cool!
You didn't read the instructions. It was intended to be paired with your smartphone. The bluetooth antenna is in the caboose.
You’re welcome buddy
My model train controllers only have ac, both for acsessorys and the trains
Allso my track has 3 rails,
and it is from Germany.
It is Märklin
I said it once and i'll say it again that would make a great give away item and I was right to.

You should add that to your layout
I want that train set
The rail joiners looks “ fat” and may be opening the locomotive will apear a big open motor. Hoooo the light doesn’t work.

this would have brass track
I have that mkt boxcar
I have the set with the same cars and box.
Would it be possible to add DCC to the locomotive?
It might be, what matters is if you can isolate the brushes.
You didn't mention how we win
Video coming soon
atlas made the track in the 60s no engines or cars
Which type of couplers are used in this train?
Horn Hook.
When is your next live stream
I never plan them
Mantua not manua. The accent is on "Man" and the "t" is not silent.
