- In this weeks video I continue my solo narrowboat journey through the Middlewich Locks and turn right onto the Wardle Canal and Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal. I was single handing my narrowboat in a heatwave through the locks but kept hydrated with ice cold drinks. The Rum Wench - my narrowboat also had her thirst quenched when the Fuel boat stopped to fill her with diesel once I was moored up.

As I write to you we have heard the news that our old dear Queen has passed away things will never seem the same, I know you can relate as like me you have never known any other monarch. Yanks cannot relate to our feeling at times like this many have little understanding of how we value the monarchy.She was a wonderful and kind woman who led by example and displayed the greatest love and respect for her subjects, she will be very sadly missed. Sorry I'm late viewing - heat and smoke from fires in California USA have made it too hard to be in my office with the computer. Heidi ... You are a narrowboat pirate and you get what you need by fighting for it (doing your own locks - keeps you fit for doing pirating) or trading for it by sharing something you have (knowledge) for something you need (help with the locks). I totally love cruising with you. Glad you are being careful of yourself and staying hydrated - ever considered wearing a sun hat to shade your face. Don't forget to keep a wet towel on your shoulders when it is this hot. The climate has changed and we all have to adapt. Good cruising to you. Arghhhh!!!

Yes it’s been a very hot year this year …. I love the hot weather but would rather be moored up enjoying it than cruising in it 😂 that orange was the only ice cold cans I had in the fridge - it was very thirst quenching 😂😂🏴☠️

Just got home from my first physical therapy thingy and there you are. Pleasant break. Here the trees are turning golden. No frost yet. The music weekend was great. Played lots of music with many good musicians. A great bunch of people. Lots of dogggies to pet. Always great watching your videos.

I’m seeing Puddin and Jax soon, Puddin is doing very well so will be fabulous to see him 😄🏴☠️ Unfortunately Diesel and coal have gone up a lot this year but we need them 😩 it’s going to be a tough winter for a lot of people especially house dwellers as their electric has gone up a lot too 🏴☠️

While we have binge watched all your vlogs I just realised we had liked but not commented. After 50 years of travelling and camping, with a combined age of 171 years we have resorted to armchair travelling. We enjoy your channel immensely as it shows a lifestyle we haven’t experienced in Tasmania nor even Australia. Wow the locks were deep in today’s vlog and in the heat hard work. Oh! Yes Wardle is the shortest but it’s not a stop lock it’s just the length from the bridge to the lock in distance which is about 70 foot long 😂😂

Hi Heidi ,you're looking good despite the heat. Don't complain too much it will get cold soon enough. I'm late again this week as I've had a busy day INR test this morning ,luckily the clinic is very near and the result was excellent so don't have to go for another month. Picked up my new glasses ,sad to say they aren't the Gin and tonic type.This afternoon the wife and I drove to Sussex a Dairytown about 35 miles away, they have a big hot air balloon festival for the first time for two years because of Covid. You can buy a ride if you're brave. I just like to see them above the green countryside, they are all brightly coloured and in al kinds of shapes too. They also have a huge Flea Marketa ,Funfair and lots of Food trucks but as it was warm 25c we just had a chocolate dipped soft ice cream. After driving home I got ready to go to a big reception in the Hilton, lots of nibbles but the Bar prices were through the roof so I just had a local beer. Just got home and watched your vlog .Another nice one darlin, I see your numbers are going up nicely you should be at 10k before Christmas, good to see the Patreon list growing too and the rum keeps flowing all good to see.. Haven't seen any Drone shots lately, is it lost or broken hon?

Hi Heidi. A quirky vlog, as always, and I love quirky. I just had a look on the Black Country Boating Festival website (it's this coming weekend) and by a roundabout route ( no, not the the Curley Wyrley!) found myself on the CRT site and looking at the cost of boating licences. Blimey, it costs quite a bit for a trading licence doesn't it, and even more expensive when you have to pay for a boaters licence as well. And the continuous cruising rules-well, I bet somebody in an office had nothing better to do one rainy afternoon and came up with that lot! Keep up the good work, love Mike.
Yes it’s the Black Country … I’ve done a lot of them in the past… a fantastic festival ❤️ luckily we only need the traders license not both but we do then have to get additional insurance and public liability but yes the continuous cruising rules still apply however we do get an extra day either side on a 48hr is we are trading thankfully 😃🏴☠️

I’m behind with the videos …. I record a load of footage then it takes me ages to edit them so this was about 2-3 weeks ago. I tend to edit Monday and Tuesdays as I’m cruising, making badges and trading as the Pirate boat the rest of the time 😃🏴☠️

We know that Puds isn’t able to be a boat dog anymore but I miss seeing Jax too. I was thinking about them because for some reason I just realized you haven’t anything to keep you company onboard anymore. Do you ever think about getting another pup to keep you company?
I’ve not seen Jax and Puddin for about 6 weeks … they are due a visit, I really miss little Puddin - he was onboard with me for 6 years, but thankfully I get photos on what’s app 😃🏴☠️
Hey I had a kitty that was with me for 18yrs. She was the longest continuous relationship in my life at that point so I absolutely understand missing what is essentially your child. The great thing is that the gods sent me another little girl kitty that is truly amazing. I have Multiple Sclerosis and a badly broken back so I’m usually in a lot of pain, I have a few things that help the pain but the best is my Kacey Kitten especially at night. If the pain I’m having gives me trouble sleeping she will climb on my chest and I stroke her back taking my mind off of the pain for a bit, sometimes I swear my other love Emmylou sent Kacey to take care of me. Oh the other thing I use to avert my attention from the pain is I watch Narrowboat vlogs. Watching you all glide through that outstandingly beautiful British countryside being entertained by such amazingly lovely people like yourself and a relaxes me. Your that friend that takes me away from the desert heat and all of the pain and you’ve got that bawdy sense of humor that as a drag nun I TOTALLY LOVE ❤️

It's been mad weather on the water this week hasn't it ?
Wednesday at noon I was at Barnton Cut in pure sunshine
yesterday thunder and belting down rain and steaming up
the cockpit now I'm in Northwich overstaying Barons Quay
A lot of narrowboats are stuck down with the lift being out
I was told by one bloke that the CRT haven't been checking
but its fair to budge off to let other boaters get shopping etc
I went home by train to fumigate and to get some fresh clothing
after being covered in shite myself wet ropes mud and sweaty
heading back today 0643 to Chester and the 0802 to Northwich
It's nice down there on the Middlewich branch of the "Shroppie"
are you heading for the Llangollen when you get to Barbridge ?
There should be help on hand at Grindley Brook staircase if so

NO I just sold it to a bloke in Northwich the little 21 foot Shetland
sorry to see my little runabout go like any boat but a cruiser is just a
headache in winter unless you can haul it out and store it sheltered
and there's outboard care ice and frost and unable to go anywhere
Now concentrating on the (remaining) canals and narrowboat again
The Weaver will always be special to me since boyhood on there and
I'll be back down there next year when the damn lift is hopefully fixed
Sunrise Northwich to Acton Bridge after another coffee at Barnton
waiting for the lockie to start at Saltersford - then more countryside
It's boss getting up before daylight freshening up coffee & crumpets
heading off like creeping away stealthily a nice quiet four stroke OB
while other boaters around you are still asleep with wood burners on
and cruising gently as the sun rises and a low foggy dew mist slowly
disappears not another person on the water anywhere it's ghostly with
all that history and ICI era skeletons around Anderton and Winnington
Then turning a bend after the old river weirs and into pure countryside
looking behind where you've just been with the rear canopy window up
and a gentle backwash two side sections rolled up to listening to ripples
made by your bow wave and seeing herons statue like all along the way
with the sudden dramatic contrasts of huge disused quays and bollards
then cows sheep birds foxes squirrels horses in fields and endless trees
So sometimes it can be fun on a cruiser I've been on the Manchester Ship
canal years ago from Ellesmere Port I haven't been while the lift is out and
I have a secure mooring only live two rail stations away from Acton Bridge
then bus or bike the train takes 18 minutes after 20 minutes to the station
