Wise clarification, Cam! Appreciated your politeness to both of your guests in letting them speak freely. As Dr. Alexander was a first time guest, it showed mature restraint for you and Dr. Habermas to let him speak fully without feeling the need for constant rebuttals or trigger warnings.

A wise statement especially concerning reincarnation which has been also refuted by others who have investigated nbes, because they have found out later that those who believe they had a life before this one found out that it was memories of a book they read years ago and had forgotten things of this nature, also in certain scientific magazines written accounts of those who have received body parts hearts especially, from organ donors, who have woken up with memories which do not belong to them, and there are a couple of cases if not more where the doona was actually murdered and they actually captured the murderer through the memories of the one who received the organ, which is a very interesting thing to say the least.

Very interesting conversation. As somebody who is currently researching NDEs I am surprised about all the scientific literature on it. The veridical part of it where the people who have experienced it have been able to recount what happened while they were unconscious is remarkable; these accounts happen to children, adults and people across all faiths even atheists recalling events or objects that are beyond the scope of the environment where the body is located. The most famous atheist NDE is probably that of AJ Ayers although nothing in his specific account was veridical.
I never thought I would actually come to this conclusion but I am convinced that this is good evidence that the consciousness survives beyond death.

Great man, great conversation! We need more people like him to come out and tell their stories. Most people prefer to keep this stuff to themselves out of fear of being ridiculed or called crazy. That what happened in my case. I had a very similar experience when 18 years old. I was so amazed and shaken by it that I was eager to share it with all my friends. The best reaction l got was disbelief. The worst was a friend of mind who got angry at me , saying that I should get serious and get on with my life instead of making up stories like this! @@Gatorbeaux True, Lazarus, and others that have been raised from the dead were exceptions to this rule. That is the nature of miracles. The Universe operates under general principles and laws that govern the natural order, whilst miracles suspend these laws or principles in order to bring about something that is out of the ordinary.
If the general laws and principles did not exist, then we would be unable to distinguish when Miraculous events occur.
So for example, in the case of death, if the rule was not that a person dies once, and then faces judgment, then people might come back to life randomly all over the place, you'd never know whether to bury a loved one or wait a few more days or weeks or months, etc, in case they randomly come back to life. Furthermore, when someone did come back to life, you'd have no way to know if it was a miracle or just one of the many random resurrections.
Instead, what we see, is the general rule and the miraculous exceptions go hand-in-hand to both confirm the other.

I think NDEs are great evidence for the existence of consciousness beyond death, however, when folk like Dr. Alexander speak of all of the love, and acceptance, etc. that they encountered, and then go and tell people that there is no reason to fear death. They are ignoring all of the NDEs where the person didn't experience love and acceptance, but darkness, torment, hopelessness, etc.
Then of course there are all the NDEs that begin in the light, with the overwhelming love, and then the person realizes that they can't stay there, and they begin to "fall" into the darkness, the torment, etc. And realize they missed the opportunity to receive that love, because of the things they did in life.
The fact is, that these tiny glimpses are enough to tell us that there is life/consciousness, beyond death, but they are by no means enough to build our worldviews off of. Especially since, whilst they share many commonalities, they also have many differences that are at variance with one another. They are subjective glimpses of a reality beyond the material universe, that should provoke us to seeking the answers, they are not, however, the answer in and of themselves.

1:18:08 to 1:26:00. The FAQ responds to lawsuits, noting that they were settled (lawsuits usually are, particularly when it's not a close call) but doesn't respond to the e.g., the doctor's testimony against him. The NDE article he refers to is apparently "Eben Alexander's Near-Death Experience: How an Esquire article Distorted the Facts" by Robert Mays (a guest editorial) That article does not interview Laura Potter, the key physician witness of the Esquire article (apparently she was unresponsive to telephone calls by this person). The article does claim a quote by her nonetheless supposedly issued to the Associated Press which if veridical would seem to cast doubt on the Esquire article, but I've been unable to verify the veracity of the quote (a google search turns up nothing solid).
One of the reasons for suspicion is that at the time Eben Alexander had a far higher than normal lawsuit load against him, something he left out in this interview when he talked about his lawsuits (settlements are the norm, not the exception, and are usually done when it's not a close call about who would win). The Esquire article reports (p. 95) "By the time all pending cases are resolved, Alexander will have settled five malpractice cases in the last ten years. Only one other Virginia-licensed neurosurgeon has settled as many cases in that time period, and none of settled more." He had a powerful motive to acquire cash (settlements aren't necessarily cheap, especially if you undergo them far more than usual as Alexander did). Alexander had his alleged NDE when there was a $3 million lawsuit pending. He made a lot of money with his NDE, selling webinars and even co-founding an organization called “Eternea” where (at the time) if paid $1,200 a year or more, you could qualify for a membership status called “archangel.” There was also a "Guild" in which membership dues began at $10,000 per year. Lifetime membership was offered to anyone who made a major lump sum gift of $25,000. To insinuate that there was no financial gain here (1:25:36 to 1:25:59) strikes me as somewhat misleading.
At 1:23:51 to 1:51:55 he says the Esquire article author (Luke Dittrich) was "obviously blackballed" by the industry, but the evidence he cites for this (not having published an article in the press for several years) seems insufficient, since it's unclear that writing articles for newspapers and magazines is his intended primary source of income. However, Alexander's claim that some 200 scientists questioned Dittrich's book appears to be factual (one can find it reported in Scientific American) to at least some degree; there was dispute about Dittrich's characterizations of an MIT neuroscientist. I'll link to it in the comment below this one.
I'm not saying I know for sure Eben Alexander is a grifter, but I think some amount of skepticism is warranted.

When I listen to Eben, I feel like he’s speaking on par with what could be described as the Christian understanding of the One World religion set for the times known as the tribulation period.

I think Gary was spot on when he said it's the interpretation of NDEs that's important (once we're granting these.. which Eben's experience seems virtually irrefutable, tho some say that an NDE could be the creativity of a dying brain) However, given NDEs, what do they show? Eben seems to be a pluralist or Chrisitan universalist whereas Gary is a conservative Christian (inclusivist or exclusivist I cant tell). NDEs appear to support a sort of Perrenialism, where a lot of reliogion are touching on the same reality of god but interpret it differently and have different takes. Differences in NDE imagery are connected to what most helps us process the experience, ie god communicates to us in a way we can understand. Some NDErs are even told these things in their experiences. It seems to me that this is the most rational perspective of NDEs. A perusal of hundreds of NDEs strongly suggests the view Habermas is wrong.

Very interesting. I have a totally different world view of what comes next. Orthodox Christian. Testimonies like this sure are nice to listen to, but my opinion is that good doctor has been deceived. Reincarnation, absence of both Christ and the demons, I just don't believe that the reality of the soul after death corresponds to his description. I've had two near death experiences myself, and if I went on to describe it I'm sure most of the people that read this would say they don't agree with my experience. Nevertheless I will say that the demons are ever so real and deceptive, a person must spend their life in repentance seeking Union with God through Jesus Christ, or that soul will be lost after death. Nobody wants to hear that but it's the truth. Thank you for this discussion. ☦️

NDEs are paranormal, but highly diverse, inconsistent, and subjective. (I'll cite some sources with documentation below.) I think the most likely explanation is that NDEs and some other phenomena are a dreamlike state the soul enters when prematurely separated from the body, which gives us only minimal information about the afterlife, an afterlife that's significantly different than what we see in NDEs. The dreaming we experience in our everyday lives gives us a precedent, though NDEs are different than dreams in some ways. When the soul is released from the restrictions of the body in an NDE (and in some similar experiences), there are improvements in sight, hearing, what information the soul has access to, etc. Thus, NDEs have their vividness, access to information we don't normally have access to (e.g., knowledge that somebody has recently died whose death we wouldn't know about by normal means when the soul is embodied), and so on. As Stephen Braude has argued in a chapter in a recent book, a soul separated from the body would have to utilize things like telepathy and clairvoyance in order to have experiences analogous to sight, hearing, etc. (Dangerous Pursuits [San Antonio, Texas: Anomalist Books, 2020], 199-215) So, it's unsurprising that the disembodied soul would sometimes gain access to information the soul doesn't have when embodied. But none of this changes the fact that NDEs are highly subjective. They're subjective within the framework of the soul's knowledge that it's left the body, thus explaining the focus on the afterlife in NDEs, but what occurs within that framework is very subjective. There's some degree of objectivity, vividness, and paranormal knowledge, but the experiences are nevertheless largely dreamlike.
For some examples of how subjective NDEs and some similar experiences seem to be, see Gregory Shushan's Near-Death Experience In Indigenous Religions (New York, New York: Oxford University Press, 2018). The indigenous experiences he discusses there are significantly different than what we typically see in NDEs reported in some other contexts, like the United States. Todd Murphy wrote an article you can find online, titled "Near-Death Experiences in Thailand", and it has some relevant content. It focuses on the Buddhism of Thailand, and it provides examples of how non-Christian religious themes are present in these NDEs in a variety of ways (beliefs about monks and temples, the role of Yama in the afterlife, etc.). There are explicit references to Buddha, Yama, reincarnation, Dharma, Indra, Brahma, etc. Allan Kellehear wrote, "Finally, these NDE reports [from India] included observing religious figures and deceased beings in a supernatural world with features that resembled the traditional view of the 'other realm.'…the figures observed in this world are those suggested by traditional Indian or Chinese mythology." (in Janice Miner Holden, et al., edd., The Handbook Of Near-Death Experiences [Santa Barbara, California: Praeger Publishers, 2009], 140) Yet, other NDEs are explicitly Christian (e.g., the NDE of one of Maurice Rawlings' patients, which got Rawlings involved in NDE research). Ken Vincent wrote: "I personally have met two Jews who saw Jesus during their NDEs; one converted to Christianity, and the other was thinking about it." (May 8, 2012 post in a thread titled "The Buddha in hell" at Nancy Evans Bush's Dancing Past the Dark blog) Bruce Greyson's recent book includes an account of somebody who met Jesus and heard him talking about dying on the cross, so it clearly wasn't a matter of interpreting an ambiguous being as Jesus (After [New York, New York: St. Martin's Essentials, 2021], approximate Kindle location 2470). There are reports of encountering figures we usually associate with fiction or mythology, such as the Grim Reaper (Patricia Pearson, Opening Heaven's Door [New York, New York: Atria Books, 2014], approximate Kindle location 1425). There's a low double-digit percentage of reported NDEs that are negative or hellish rather than heavenly (Janice Miner Holden, et al., edd., The Handbook Of Near-Death Experiences [Santa Barbara, California: Praeger Publishers, 2009], 70, 81). Given how many people who have hellish NDEs don't report it (because of the shame involved, for example), I suspect the actual percentage is somewhere in the 20s. People sometimes go back and forth between heaven and hell, within one experience or from one experience to another, sometimes with no apparent reason for going back and forth (ibid., 65, 76).

    • @Gatorbeaux
      @Gatorbeaux 3 года назад +5

John Burke’s book on Heaven/ NDEs said the hellish experience is around 18% so your % was spot on. The experiences that were most like the Bible describes heaven was almost or around 50%. The rest were either neutral or the patient didn’t have clear recollection. This stuff is fascinating and I’ve spoken with 2 friends that had them and both met guardian angels and spoke with Jesus and both had life reviews. One was dead 15 mins the other 1 hour and had been pronounced dead and was prayed over as a last effort and came back..

This has been argued by top New Testament scholars such as Dale Allison, EP Sanders, and Bart Ehrman. If someone believes in that and also in the resurrection (such as Allison), they will probably think that God raised Jesus from the dead in order to vindicate Jesus’ message of love and surrender to God, and also to kickstart the Christian movement-not necessarily to confirm everything that Jesus said. I personally am more open to things like pluralism or at least inclusivism when I hear about experiences in other religions (among other things).

That’s actually not that challenging of a question.
A worldview that posits a soul, is either going to be idealistic or dualistic.
Meaning there is the soul, and it is interacting with the body in some capacity.
The brain is an organ of the body. And one in which a presumed soul, or the self, deeply interacts with and is dependent upon for engagement on this side of reality.
      Brain damage effects personality.
There are well known and well
Documented cases of tumors causing psychopathy or pedophilia for example. Conversely we have evidence of the alternation of brain chemicals on personality.
All that to say, if you understand psychopathy and sociopathy as damaged or underdeveloped brains, then when the soul or the self is no longer bound to that biological interface, it will now be able to see and act more clearly.
And so in some sense, and ironically, these might be the souls which feel self condemnation the most, as it might be like waking from a bad dream and they instantly realize what they’ve done.

But knowing how consciousness work in the stream of time, the coma may have carved a deep gap in this stream that his brain filled in later on. Now in his healthy mind, he looks back at the time of his coma, and perhaps perceive that his strange out of body experience happened during that gap in his consciousness. In reality, it was filled in and recreated after he revived.

When I was about 14 I took very potent LSD and had an intense trip, but fell asleep about halfway through the trip, and had a "dream" where I didn't have a body, and I was in like a giant vertical tunnel of human faces that we're all sad, and up through the middle was a "pillar of fire" that went on forever in both directions, up and down. And the I felt a powerful presence. I immediately knew it was God. Everything turned black/dark. Suddenly it was just God and me there in this void. We were both invisible, and so there was nothing but the black void. Then, I asked God "Why?", And that was the only word I said, but he knew what I was asking. My question was "Why is there existence, why life, why something?" He said, "The boredom of nothingness".
After a long journey of life - going from pantheist, to theist, to atheist, to taoist - today I identify as an agnostic with atheist leanings, but I think about death a lot, and how many atheists say "there will be nothing after we die" or "nothingness", etc. Over the last 3 and a half years I have made it my mission to combat the idea of there being a "black void of nothingness after death", as it is not compatible with the naturalistic worldview that brains cause or do consciousness. Myself and a philosopher named Tom Clark are spreading the word about something he calls Generic Subjective Continuity. You can learn about it from my videos. I have made several about it, and Tom has an essay on it called Death Nothingness and Subjectivity on naturalism.org - Tom also made a video called Transforming Consciousness which is here on RUclips. Most atheists tend to react harshly when I try to discuss this, because they insist on asserting that "nothing happens after death". Richard Dawkins recently said, in a praise piece for Katie Engelhart's new book called The Inevitable, that death will be "Peaceful oblivion", which contradicts the idea of no longer existing - how can one experience peace if they don't exist? Many atheists resort to nonsensical language when talking about death. My point is that, no matter what *actually* happens after we die, the one thing that cannot follow death is no experience. If you'll watch my videos or read Tom's essay, you'll see why. ... I really do hope that what you say is true. I do sometimes speak to God, but I never hear him talking... That is why I am still agnostic.

41:30 yes this conclusion has always made no sense to me and people like Daniel Dennett makes this claim that consciousness is merely an illusion from physical processes in the brain, as if its an immergent property.
But the logical dilemma is... you have to use your alleged illusory consciousness to even think about the claim that consciousness is an illusion.
If you're using an illusion to claim your illusion is an illusion? then? just...
Its obvious consciousness must be a real manifest state of existence in order for anything else to be real or true. You cannot claim consciousness is an illusion by using that same purported illusory consciousness.
Like all atheists commonly held beliefs and ideas, this is inconsistent and self refuting.

    NDE CONTRADICTIONS
There is objective evidence to show that NDEs are real experiences so we are left with 2 options that can account for why NDEs can be different and even contradict.
    Either:
    1. There is only 1 objective truth and therefore spiritual experiences that contradict that truth, even NDEs that contradict that truth, are likely the result of spiritual deceptions. This does not mean that all spiritual experiences are a deception... but if there are contradictions among these experiences it does mean that spiritual deception must be a true reality we must consider when people have these experiences even if we experience them ourselves.
    Or...
    2. Everything is true and therefore nothing is true in any objective sense. You can't accept a reality where logical contradicts exist and still hold a position that there is objective truth.... once you accept this option everything breaks down and logic and reasoning become pointless.
Option 2 is not only unreasonable but it requires you to give up logic and reasoning to even hold this position. Therefore we must accept the reality that spiritual experiences and even NDEs can be a deception... but to what purpose other than there being spiritual forces that desire to keep us away from the objective truth and are willing to show us anything they think we might believe (even partial truths) as long as it leads us away from the full truth they wish to keep us from.
I have researched testimony after testimony of people who have encountered spirit guides, gods and goddesses, inner self's , aliens, angels, etc and through each ones journey for truth found that the spiritual beings they confronted did not want them to know about the "biblical" Jesus Christ because they want them to believe anything but the truth that can save them. In one case these disguised beings revealed their true nature to an individual when she saw someone's testimony of being spiritualy decieved by demons and pushed the spirits to then tell her who the biblical Jesus really was. The beings then changed to their true appearances as demons and attacked her. In another case a woman said In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to reveal yourself to me, are you a demon? and for the first time they had to answer "yes" because she commanded them in the name of Jesus Christ and they had to obey. In many of these cases when the demons would turn on the individual, the individual would often call out to Jesus for help or rebuke the demons in the name of Jesus Christ and the demons would flee.
It comes as no surprise that most people are ignorant of the fact that all of this that I am sharing with you in this comment is actually warned to us in the bible.
For those who are truely open to discerning objective truth still, here are some of the scriptures that warn us about the war and deceptions that we should expect in the spiritual realm and the truth we see before us and experience to testify of:
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
    John 14:6 NASB
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
    EPHESIANS 6:12 NASB
They sacrificed to demons who were not God, To gods whom they have not known, New gods who came lately, Whom your fathers did not dread. You neglected the Rock who begot you, And forgot the God who gave you birth.
    Deuteronomy 32:17‭-‬18 NASB
What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.
    1 Corinthians 10:19‭-‬20 NASB
No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.
    2 CORINTHIANS 11:14‭-‬15 NASB
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.
    1 John 4:1‭-‬3 NASB
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow , of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
    Philippians 2:5‭-‬11 NASB
It is because I have looked into these matters openly and found that all roads point to Jesus Christ that I don't want to share all this with those who may read it without saying the following...
I invite anyone who wants to have a true relationship with Jesus Christ to pray and invite Him into their hearts as their Lord and Savior. The Bible teaches us that we have all sinned and that our sin has a cost, and that cost is death. Our sin defiles us and seperates us from our Holy God but Jesus who is God, and lived a perfectly sinless life paid for that sin himself of his own free will so that we can come home to Him... but we must first accept that sacrifice and give ourselves freely to the Lord. There is not much to this... it just takes repenting of your sins to God and believing and receiving that Jesus paid the sacrifice "for you" and to follow Him from this point on. We have hope in his ressurection because as he rose again to be with the Father, we who place our trust in Him will do likewise.
    The bible tells us this:
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
    Romans 10:9‭-‬11 NASB1995

Does he not understand that these same bodies will be resurrected to eternal life? Of course, they'll be glorious and incorruptible bodies, but they'll be glorified physical bodies nonetheless.
Greek philosophy has done much damage by separating the sacred from secular, and physical from spiritual. Let's remember that our faith is Jewish. We serve a risen Jewish Jesus. And Jews never viewed our bodies, souls, and minds in the way Greek philosophy does.

This was honestly a bit awful.
Eben tended to ramble quite a bit. And there towards the end it was a long tangent claiming libel.
But I think one “doth protest too much.” It’s interesting that his entire response was ad hominem. Directed at esquire and the author. Seeking to attack the man to discredit the article rather than the points in them. And the constant protesting and repeating - It seems very telling.
If it was such a clear cut case of libel, he should sue.
And then Gary, just refused to engage in any meaningful way.
Clearly with NDE’s and Christian belief, there is a big issue and question at hand.
    - If NDE’s are sufficient evidence of an afterlife, then this means we believe they are actually experiencing said afterlife.
But if they are actually experiencing the afterlife, then what does it mean when their experiences contradict each other or more importantly contradict Christian dogma?
If Eben’s experience was real - where was Jesus? And why was He absent from paradise? And why was his great lesson reincarnation?
Why do most NDE’s lead to a Unitarian type belief?
To bring any of that into question, is to bring the experience itself into question. But if you bring the experience itself into question, then the idea of NDE’s being evidence of an afterlife is in question.
All of this went completely avoided and unacknowledged. As he refused to engage in the issue of reincarnation or any points of disagreement.
