I think it is great that in both Czech and German, GLaDOS uses a formal way of adressing you. It really emphasizes the "uncaring corporate atmosphere".
In russian too!
@@user-wm3ff7rl2g Weirdly enough in russian GLaDOS actually uses informal way
@@kmesh9 No, at first - During the first two acts of Portal 1 she uses the formal way, up to the point where she no longer needs to find her true intensions (Although she mistakenly refers to player with male pronounce, since the localization team didn't had the context of what gender the player's character is.
There is Czech dabing?
@@kebab2275 Sadly no, but there are subtitles which are translated perfectly.
The Oracle Turret explained exactly why she wasn't dubbed and spoke English compared to other turrets.
"I'm different."
15:43 Damn, you got me there. Love the fake voicelines though. I somehow immediately fell in love with them- lmfao
Good! Because that's my voice.
@DeificTable6933 yeah, thats what it gave it away
@@GermanPeter In russian dub they completely dropped Aperture.
@@GermanPeter A side note, there were actually going to be human test subjects for COOP. This would've been Chell and an additional character named "Mel" (who is actually the main character for the mod "Portal Stories: Mel", which pretty darn cool).
Off the top of my head, I can't remember the exact reason why they changed it to robots, but I'm 99% sure it's because players actually felt bad if they accidentally killed their "Partner in Science."
Quite frankly, knowing this fact made me believe this for a few seconds, so good job, ya got me!
@@SuperGamersgames Mel and Chell gamemodes were made not for cooperative testing, but for a cut sport type gamemode using portals and a sphere like volleyball. The Cooperative Testing Initiative was conceptualized post Core-Hub Era of development (in fact the Coop hub is the direct evolution of the core hub) which is way after the Mel/Chell Gamemode was cut (do correct me if I am wrong)
Man, I wouldn't mind learning German from this glados

The two portal games are by far the best translated videogames by Valve. One of my bucket list items is to one day meet Gertrude Thoma and tell her, how much her work on this game influenced me.
Make that two of us!
@@GermanPeter Hey ! Enough your bull sh*t german videos and crap Valve german versions!
A fun thing about the accent scene is that every language uses a unique accent. For instance, in French he speaks with a Quebec accent, and in Spanish it's Mexican.
The Spanish dub is actually in an Argentine accent and German dub uses either a swiss/Austrian or Bavarian accent.
@@NisarKhan-jm1uh Ah my bad.
@@Kirbman No problem and your welcome.
It's not the case with Russian. The only foreigners average Russian citizen sees every day are from post-Soviet states like Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan etc. Imitating their accents can be considered racist because Russia has very serious problems with migrants (in 2022 there was 12,78 millions official migrant workers). If you want to know more, there is the Wiki article about working migrants in Russia, although it is only available in Russian: ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Трудовые_мигранты_в_России
Accents of Caucasus region and Southern countries don't fit either since imitating them is also could be seen as mockering due to past (and current) violence and terrorism problems (e.g. Second Chechen War). Accent of Mongolic languages from regions like Buryatia doesn't really work with Russian to create a comedic effect, and many of these people can speak Russian without accent anyway. People from Slavic countries like Ukraine and Belarus also can speak Russian without accent. And Ukrainian accent was mostly a part of racist anecdotes long before the war. So, there is only one way: use Russian regional accents. The problem is… they either too subtle to make a difference (and often the only difference is the lexicon, not a pronunciation) or would sound strange, like Vologda accent. But maybe the dubbers could have used some regional accent with significant pronunciation changes from average Russian since this speech of Wheatley is a very small part of the game
@@criminalbird9138 It seems that Russians are pretty sensitive in mocking people of certain backgrounds or accents in a unflattering way.
Since neither Wikipedia nor the game nor the internet holds the entire casting list of Portal 2, I've went ahead and researched them and compared voice demos to get a "definitive list". Thought it would be a neat thing to drop in here:
GLaDOS - Gertrude Thoma
Wheatley - Tobias Meister
Cave Johnson - Rüdiger Schulzki
Announcer - Mark Bremer
Adventure Core - Erik Schäffler
Fact Core - Oliver Bötcher
Space Core - Tim Knauer
Turrets - Gertrude Thoma
I'm working with the German dubbing industry and was able to personally verify most of these roles already, so I'm pretty confident in it.
Oh wow, the Announcer and Space Core aren't one and the same? That's interesting!
Also thanks for actually telling who was who instead of going "Hee hee we don't wanna spoil anything so we won't tell ;)"
Fact Core wurde vom Tim Knauer gesprochen, nicht vom Oliver Bötcher. Oliver hat die kaputten Turrets gesprochen.
@@GermanPeter I think the problem back then was, that Valve did not compile a casting list for their credits and media, so the article you found could only go off from the general press message from EA, who published the games in Europe and listed off some of the cast.
@@dantubehds Are you sure? I've been in contact of both managements and Bötchers management confirmed to me that he spoke the Fact Core. The recordings (compared to audio demos from 2010) also sound fitting.
I'm still impressed Thoma straight up does just sound like "GladOS but German". Though honestly I actually quite enjoy when dubs diverge from the source material, putting their own little spin on a character.
GLADoS was some massive shoes to fill and, honestly?... Thoma smashed it! Definitely a different performance than the original, but incredibly well done
45:17 I actually like the fact that every instance of "The part where he kills you" is written in a different way. It makes use of the many ways you can say something and i love how the Achievement and Chapter name sound more like the game telling you that you die. For those wondering the achivement name is "Hier werden sie getötet" which would translate to "Here is where you will be killed" or "You will be killed here". Also the achivements all use the formal version of you.
"Defense Grid" also has GlaDOS with German voice acting! The mission where she appears is called Divided Attention, "Geteilte Aufmerksamkeit".
Not aware of that, that's cool!
Having GLaDOS' German actress redo the lines just shows how much CDPR cares about properly localizing their games. BTW she also voiced the fixer portrayed by Nina Kravitz in Cyberpunk.
Also about Cave Johnson in Lego Dimensions, to me he sounds like the same voice actor as in Portal 2? His voice is a bit different but it still seems to be the same actor.
Oh, the Nina fact would have been interesting to include.
Also no, it can't be the same Cave. I thought the same at first but he sounds too different and pronounces all the words differently too. Going from "Apertshure" to "Apertiure" is too big of a leap, in my opinion.
@@GermanPeter Hm I've been going back an forth in your video comparing them and to me they really sound like the same person. And as you pointed out everyone is pronouncing Aperture like this in the Lego version so I wouldn't count this as evidence imo.
CDPR cares so much about properly localizing their games, but doesn't care enough to actually finish Cyberpunk 2077.
i wish they cared about gameplay and open world immersion/details as much as they care about graphics and localization
@@scoundrel8440 You do realize CP2077 had a major comeback last year and it has been in a pretty finished state since then?
As an english speaker, hearing 43:41 just feels so surreal.
55:55 - 56:09
I actually kinda like this, in a sort of weird way. It feels like either GLADOS is less concerned about everyone else and focused on Chell, since she's the main test subject of the Portal games and a bit of a high priority, or she's talking to you. As in the player. It gives that weird eerie vibe to her that is pretty interesting to listen to.
That could actually be the case, since the chambers are almost definitely designed around using different abilities that logically should not exist in the world of Portal. So maybe she's breaking the forth wall when she says "I believe you cheated".
ahhh yes! chell. obviously her german counterpart is superior.
EDIT: Portal 2 might have the best german dub out of all the valve games. great video!
There are some quirks in the Spanish dub of Portal 2:
- Similar to the German dub, there seems to have been an error with the Oracle Turrent lines, but instead of using the english voice clips they use all the generic Turrent phrases (even though the subtitles display the correct dialogue)
- Cave's "life give you lemons" phrase was changed to "to bad weather, good face" which works better idiomatically but really breaks the whole "combustible lemon" rant later on, instead saying he's going to "burn the forecast map" and make "isobar-based fuel" (which makes no sense)
- None of the Perpetual Test Innitiative lines were dubbed
- Wheatley is voiced by the same actor as TF2 Spy, which is a big coincidence when you remember the Ap-Sap! (sadly, undubbed), and Cave Johnson is the Medic and the Heavy
- Both GLaDOS and Cave's VAs do reprise their roles in LEGO Dimensions and Cyberpunk, but not Wheatley
"I wouldn't do it with a robot, would you?"
Don't judge me!
I'd be a hypocrite if I judged you 😔

The russian dub for portal 2 is AMAZING
It's one-to-one in terms of voices, and it's ***perfect***
Go make a video about it!
@@GermanPeterthat was a bit rude
@@fosforum1 How?
@@fosforum1 I know that tones difficult to convey through text, but how did that sound rude?
@@OpheliaTerat "go make a video," Peter seems to be saying "so make a video better than mine, that the Russian dub is great." Although I found couple videos where you can hear the difference in voice acting in different languages in some episodes, including in Russian
Portal 1 came out when I was taking German classes in high school and I played through it a couple times with the language set to German and the delivery/voice was so spot-on to the English version that it was almost invisible to me, and I actually thought it was the same VA. I didn't pick up any subtle changes between the two versions, but my German was good enough that I could tell that is was basically the exact same lines said in German, which was pretty validating at the time as a new learner
I’m a Swiss-Texan, and I laughed a little too hard at 44 minutes. Danke Peter!
If I had to guess, the reason the "blood" in the German version of Portal is gray and not just removed in the Orange Box version is because Portal 1 shares quite a fair bit of Half-Life 2's assets. You can especially see this if you go into the developer console, enable sv_cheats, and type "impulse 101", you'll gain all of the weapons Gordon Freeman has access to in HL2. The shotgun, revolver, crowbar, and even the gravity gun. This is also why the turrets in Portal have nearly the same AI as they do in Half-Life 2's Nova Prospekt, only the ones in Portal die for good once they shut down.
I’ve played portal 1 so many times. I never knew you could flush the toilet in the beginning room.
I always thought that the "Oh no, i'm one of the bad guys" line from the turret was a fourth wall breaking joke. As in the turret was so broken, i realised it was designed to help the antagonist of the Game
i just adore how incredibly sarcastic and condescending Thoma's GLaDOS sounds, it's like a perfect mix of seething hatred and fake politeness
also 33:33, strangely fitting analogy. now i kinda wish for a dub where the turrets are voiced by Julia Stoepel
If a german uses the formal you they either really respect you or they hate your guts
I actually really want that soldier coop now. That seems like such a fun idea. Just these two hecu grunts forced to solve puzzles and getting progressively more angry that they can’t just shoot the problem.
"Yeah, maybe. All I know for sure is she's been testing my buddies. >:("

33:20 Fun Fact: The subtitles from that poethic turret are translated, but the voice is not. So the script must've been there but somehow they have overseen it to be voice acted. Seen that in an old Domtendo let's play.
Seems to be the case for the added unused voice lines in L4D2 as well. There are subtitles, but they have never been dubbed, which is why you will still hear a lot of english when playing L4D2 in other languages besides it.
In this case, it does make sense, as they were not going to be used anyway.
Man I'm right on time.
Fun fact I never played German Portal in my life.
The reason for that is that my sister brought it back from Brittian after an exchange month I didn't understand you could change the language.
I do find it very strange and interesting that the Oracle Turret(the one who talks about Prometheus) doesn't have her/their lines translated into German. I guess that they didn't have time to translate those lines even though they are something that foreshadows future events in the story.
Tobias Meister (Wheatly) is a fucking beast. He is so good in transforming his voice to a certain role.
The character development shown by the uses of Sie and Du is amazing and a kind of subtlety you just don't get in English
Finally, some love for the German localization!
(Also, based on my SPECTACULAR knowledge of German voice actors, I think Tim Knauer to be the most likely to have voiced the Announcer. He does sound a bit different than what I'm used to, but it sounds most like him, and ESPECIALLY the Space and Fact Cores sound a lot like Knauer)
Tim Knauer also voiced characters in both Left 4 Dead games, so it'd make sense for him to be in another Valve game.
22:18 Wheatlys turn is so impressive in this language. The laugh. oh my god the laugh. Thats REALLY good. Also, you absolutely got me with the co-op soldiers. I was getting ready to write a message to my server about it. Hats off to you.
*Edit from 17.06.23:* a lot of people have mentioned that the GLaDOS easter egg in Cyberpunk IS the same lines as from Portal 1 & 2, just with a different voice filter. I can absolutely hear that, and I suppose they're right. It's still impressive they went through the effort of contacting Valve to get the original (unedited) lines, when they could have easily dubbed it themselves.
Here's the other "Quirks of German X"-videos I mentioned in the video:

There are no german glados voice lines for portal 1 on theportalwiki
Hmm. Dude. As fellow german, wasn't the "Hero Turtles" thing not from the uk and we just took that in germany?
Great video!
In the French dub of Portal 1, instead of saying "weeeeeeeee" French Glados says "Noooooous", like "we" as in "all of us".
did germanpeter just open his video with "TW: German" 💀
When I first played Portal 1 and 2, I played the German dub and really was surprised about how natural it feels. Even without lissening to the original voices, I knew that this was a quality dub.
Du machst immer die besten Videos!
The german space/fact core is also the same german voice of Ellis from left 4 dead 2 and adventure core 'rick' is Nick
nice to see you here
That's great to know, thanks!
I played the portal games when I was 11, which was in like 2014. I still remember exactly how shocked I was to see blood in a game, since that usually shocked my parents and they didn't care much anymore xd
But both games are master pieces to this day and I gotta say, as great as the english voices are, which inevitably I grew to love ofc, since I interacted with the fandom, this game would have never been the same for me without the german voice actors.
Be it smaller roles like the cores in both games, or main characters such as GLaDOS, I thought the voice acting was amazing
Also I love that GLaDOS goes from refering to Chell with "Sie" to "Du" between the games, showing they're much more personal now and she doesn't feel the need to respect Chell anymore. I don't see this used often, the only other example I know being titanic and honestly I think it's something that really makes the experience that slight bit better.
Thanks a lot for making this. It's been like 5 years since I last touched portal and 8 years since I even cared and you really sent me back in time with this
Honestly with your presentation and all I'm always surprised you have so few subscribers, great video as always
Another great video! I hope you do a video on the quirks of German Left 4 Dead next, especially knowing how heavily censored Left 4 Dead 2 was. Also, Wheatley in the thumbnail with the German hat is honestly adorable!
Another fun fact about Portal 1 translations: On the spanish version they literally just use a Text To Speech software for Glados (They used "Loquendo")
Great video as always petes
Gonna rank the cast right quick.
GlaDOS/Caroline: A - A solid substitute for Ellen, however, to me, it feels like a translation more than a localization.
Wheatley: B - Not as stellar as Stephen, but I do get something out of the Swiss accent that actually got a chuckle out of me.
Cave Johnson: S - Being a disembodied voice, it's nice that the team working on the translation got to stretch their legs a little and do something different with Cave. I'd even give merit for it being an unintended effect of rewriting lines.
Turrets: C - Perfection it may be, but somehow I feel like a new game would have meant new opportunity. Especially with the Prometheus dialogue.
Announcer/Emergency AI/Defective Turrets: C - I haven't played Portal 2 in a long time, so I can't say much. I think it's technically better than the original since none of the dialogue comes to mind other than the 'smooth jazz' line.
Chell: ß - No kidding? I think they did better than they did with both Gordon Freeman (specifically in Episode 2) and Adrian Sheppard. A vocal range like that is just unheard of and I'm happy to see how much they improved since the 90s.
I love your videos, they just have a certain honest charm others don't capture.
The grey blood in the original Portal is such a weird choice. Black? Sure, you can re-contextualize it as like, oil for the robots. Grey though? It just looks like grey blood.
Just a leftover from the Half-Life games on the same disk, I suppose.
For the Chell part at 11:27 , I thought you were going to show gameplay of Chell damaging herself and emitting the same hurt noises as the HL2 female citizen, revealing either it’s still English HL2 or carried over from German HL2.
If you didn’t know about that fact before hand, well now you know. I’m still curious about that.
Definitely gonna watch this whole thing hell yeah
I would love to see a Wolfenstein Dub analysis
This series has now become part of the long-videos-I-watch-while-on-a-roadtrip list, formerly only housing Ross's Game Dungeon videos because they are eternally rewatch-able .
GladOS sounds like one of those people who read out safety instructions on the plane…
I love it
Portal is what got me into gaming properly. And hearing it in german now is so funny to me as a dutch person. Love this video
The turrets "Auwauwauwauwaueauwau" always gets me smiling.
I don't know if you have any experience with those games, but a "Quirks of German Command And Conqiuer Generals" video would be fun.
It’s still so nice watching your Quirks videos after all this time. I wonder if there’s any Funny German Versions of Sonic games, that I wanna find out for myself.
41:46
i felt that viscerally, just that little shake of the mouse
You got me wanting to replay both games now!
thx for telling me that this vid contained spoilers for german
was able to finish my own version before watching it
Hearing German Wheatly after watching the german dub for Bullet train, I can't help but see Brad Pitt. (They're voiced by the same guy in the german dub, and they sound pretty much exactly alike, the characters are kinda similar too, in terms of speech patterns)
33:33 Soundling like Fluttershy in a metal shell. I have never thought of this. now I will never be able to get it out of my head.
59:01 Nice little detail with the subtitles! ;)
I will say, the Intro was rad xD
Awesome!
I loved it ! Makes me wonder about making the same video, but with the French version instead
"...no, I wouldn't do it with a robot, would you???"
*YES.* *I. FUCKING. WOULD.* GHEHEHEHAHAHAHAHAHA
What a great intro!
fyi, glados also speaks spanish when bugging out at the beginning in the english version too, but i feel in the german version it's a lot clearer and almost doesnt even sound like she's glitching at all
Another weird translation thing I noticed is right after the part where he kills you. When you go back after Wheatley kindly asked you to, he talks about all the stuff that''s waiting for Chell down the pit. Glados then says in the English dub "I can't believe you came back!". In the German dub she says "Unglaublich, du bist zurück" which just doesn't really fit the situation. I feel like the translator didn't have the full context for all the scenes, thus they came up with this? Same with the "Dort!" thing you mentioned. It doesn't make any sense in context. But maybe they thought Glados wanted you to look somewhere (since she says "Look...") and turned it into this "Dort! Sieh nur!" thing instead of a "Hör mal,..." or something.
Anyway, really enjoyed your video!! I love the German Portal dub (not just because I'm German but also because it's really well done) and like how you showed differences or things the German dub did better.
I'm not going to lie, i don't understand German, except for basic things, like nien and ich, (no clue if those are spelled right) but this was still a great video! Thanks!
Great voice acting for the morality core !
Amazing work as always Peter

Umm... Actually... 😳
Gutes video❤
You honestly could have convinced me with the soldiers in Portal 2 bit cause Valve as a whole seems like they were having a bit of a "moment" the whole time during around 2008 to 2011
I don't kniw why but for some reason it makes me smile that you used Domtendo's footage
To be fair it my eyes it makes sense that a post Portal 2 Whietley sounds more reserved

A little death fight brings people closer together.
The best "mistranslation" is when you slide down the chute in the beginning of portal 1 and instead of saying "WEEEEE!" as in an exclamation of fun for the activity, glados goes "Wiiiiiiiiiiir" as in the personal pronoun. Someone used a translator for that, I cannot imagine otherwise.
2:35 "Momma"?! Mommy?! Sorry, Mutter? Sorry, Mummy? Sorry, Mama? Sorry, Mommy?"
Saubere Arbeit!
did not know that they changed the Babe Ruth fact to a Michael Schumacher fact but as a fan of Formula1 racing I kinda wish that was the fact we got over here. Michael was my favorite lol
German glados in portal 1 is so different sounding from english glados and i actually really enjoy the way she sounds.
Hallo Bruder. So cool how you perfectly explain the quirks of German voices in English. I love all of them! Been stuck in my head since I'm smol.
And I also think they sound more serious, and in English more exaggerated. It's pretty much the case in most German dubs when I hear them. Maybe it's how our language sounds or maybe it just sounds more serious to me because it's my native.
Interesting to see history repeating itself when German Glados started to talk about filling rooms with deadly gasses.
Interesting vid! Although I can't understand a word of German, the voices seem to fit. It's interesting how GLaDOS switches between formal and informal pronouns in German. In my native tongue French, she always uses "vous" when adressing you (as about everyone else does), being the formal (or plural) version of "you".
Want some fun trivia about the french dub of Portal 2?
Cave Johnson's whole "combustible lemons" rant was entirely changed, as the idiom "When life gives you lemon, make lemonade" doesn't really have a french equivalent. Instead it was translated to "When life knocks you down, you've got to get back up", which kind of fits the vibe. Here's the full french rant translated:
Cave Johnson: "Welp, I've thought about it a bit... When life knocks you down, it's not enough to get back up..."
PotatOS: "Yeees..."
CJ: "You've gotta smash this old hag's kneecaps! An eye for an eye and A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH! Try to get back up NOW, YOU TRAMP!!"
P-OS: "Yes! Yes! Come on, smash its kneecaps!"
CJ: "I swear, Life will rue the day it tripped Cave Johnson! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I'm the Big Bad Wolf who's going to knock your house DOWN!!"
P-OS: "Do what you want!"
CJ: "I'll have my engineers build kneecaps to YOUR HOUSE, JUST SO I CAN *SMASH THEM!!!* " _Coughes his lungs out._
P-OS: "Break a leg!! He's saying out loud what everyone else is thinking!"
PotatOS has such a giddy voice during the rant too! It's so funny when she happily cheers Cave to smash Life's kneecaps XD
That actually sounds hilarious and perfectly fitting for the characters! The voice acting was really good too after watching it.
As I only played portal when it was released on switch I didn’t know what the game on Germany thanks Peter!
Another epic German Peter banger? JA!
Geeze, the Announcer sounds even _more_ like an airport announcer.
That the voice of wheatley is also the german voice of Jack Black is just beautiful!
'schwabel zum Aufzug' fucking got me good, god damn thats a funny word choice
A really really interesting quirk that you missed in Portal 1 is, that in the german versions, the Turrets don't scream when you set it on fire. Not even Schnittberichte mention this fact
Glados in german: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
glados in english: AEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAE
OOF L O U D
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I never knew about this, cool video idea. I always find Valve's antics to be.. interesting.
Cool video !
I played the french dub and its really great !
The GLaDOS "cameo" in cyberpunk rly took me by surprise and got a good laugh out of me! ^^
The no blood removal change makes sense since then you woundn't have to make as many engine changes if you did a soft reset to other games k'now
For some reason that intro sequence really felt like it's straight out of the Traveller's Tales LEGO games
For the voice of the Announcer, try finding out who the voice of the explanations in the ARD television show "Wer weiß denn sowas?" is. He's definitely the one doing it.
