- About the Pub
Closed in 2018 when operators moved to new premises. Site abandoned, vandalised and then fire bombed on two successive nights. Property unsafe and photos of interiors show substantial damage. Planning permission to build a hotel on the site refused in 2021. Future uncertain but unlikely to reopen.
Historic Interest
Originally built as a private residence, said to have been occupied in 1795 by Benedictine monks expelled from France. The building was licensed from the early 1800s, at least since 1817. Listed in Bagshaw's Directory of 1850. Known by various names, Tranmere Inn & Ferry House, Castle Hotel and became the Royal Castle by 1870. Acquired by Threlfalls in mid 1890s and selling Whitbread beers into the 1980s. Later known as Hotel California, Mr Davidson's Bar then Revolver before closure in 2018.
What a shame drove past this the other day and thought what a stunning old building...one of so many in Liverpool...
