The actress playing the daughter is very, very good. She conveys disdain, superiority and determination with just a look. No overacting, just ‘knowing’.
And she's so believable. Takes a telenovella type role and makes it uncomfortably real. I've met people like her who just sit on their greed and generational fear like that

Veronica Falcon was amazing as Catherine. Every time she was on the screen she steal the show. Her victorian attire, mexican accent, comebacks that cut like knife & her acting. She's so good.

Her dad pretty much picked up Rita at a whore house while Rita was very young and in the prime of her beauty, and then just married her instantly to bring her home while his daughter was elsewhere doing other things.
So yeah from his daughters perspective. "You wouldn't let me have my handsome but poor man when I was twenty, now out of the blue you marry this very beautiful twenty year old hooker while I am in my forties."

A prostitute. It’s heavily implied. Especially since she says it’s the gutter. Working as a lady of the night during the 1930s was not exactly the most safe nor respectable job.

I can't stand when people look down on women that marries for money when it clear that the dude also married her for her looks. My friend have older siblings who hated his gut for just been out of a woman the father propose after 2 days together, she was like 10/10 and he was a older divorced with teens kids. My friend grown up with his siblings that hated him for things he could not control, until day he was a teen and call his siblings for never judging his father for marrying a woman for equally shallow reasons 😢😢 he grown up very mess up in the head.

Hi. Latina here! Latin women grow up in a standard that anyone who hurts their family will NEVER get away with it. Even when our family has wronged us, there is still the standard of “defend your family”. This also explains why some Latinos like witchcraft : it’s another outlet for revenge. Not justifying, just explaining.
If you watch later in the movie, the daughter explains how she liked her stepmom and they were both friends, until the stepmom decided that she didn't need her anymore.

What happened to them at the end?
