I was stationed at Fallon 92 to 95, A.I.M.D., loved watching these little rockets take off and land. They were part of the aggressor squadrons there and they were awesome. Hard to believe something so small could be so damned fast. And nevermind the agility these things had/have. Insane little jets.
The two seater is "Frankentiger" They took the nose/cockpit of an F model added to the rest of an E, former Swiss Air force. I fly R/C versions done up as VMFT-401 and VFC-13. Never get tired of the F-5!
At WTI in early 1980 I had the opportunity to look at an F-5 up close. I thought if I was a Tin Hat 3rd world honcho I would want F-5's and A-4's for my Air Force. Both beautiful, proven and easy to maintain.
The T-38, F-5 was built with the Soviet mindset... Build it strong and reliable, easy to maintain and make it inexpensive, so you have build millions of them. Id rather have 200 F-5's than 5 F-15's... Numbers baby, wins EVERYTIME
@nathanairchimesP135R They are Aggressor Squadrons, so they try and be the bad guys when practicing dog fighting. They are painted up that way so you can tell they are aggressors jets and not some one from your squadron
The nose-gear extension @2:55 is nice have not seen that before. the F-5 has such a long nose and small looking inlets. The red stars on the tails where odd.
Everyone thinks Lockheed-Martin cheats or buys their contract wins. When they joined KAI to design a new trainer & fighter they used the F-5/T-38 as the model to replicate. The Marines are trying to buy all the working F-5s they can find, and L-M/KAI knew that. The new FA-50/T-50A are the new replacements with the same speed Mach 1.5 and it can turn on a dime. Northrup pulled out the competition I think as much as someone beat them to punch than not have a capable design. I saw their prototype and it looked so much like the F-5/T-38 it was almost the next generation. The Marines and Navy design most of their planes to have a pilot and bombardier navigator, and FA-50 is the child of the F-5 with stadium seats. Oh yeah Iran bought these planes instead of the Russian or Chinese counterpart. That says much about the capability of the new plane.
No. It's only symbolic, and nobody at the squadron would call them aggressors. It is or was "fleet advisory squadron" now it is composition squadron. Oh, how do I know? I worked there for 10 years.
But I still take it the idea is to make them look like Soviet/Russian aircraft and play the part of an enemy aircraft in training exercises? How else would it be 'symbolic'?
These F5 serve in the Adversary Program. They simulate Russian tactics for to prepare other squadron for war dogfighting. The red star symbolize the Russian adversary.

+Jake Kellogg The number 1 plane on the first landing purposely landed a little further down the runway not knowing how close the number 2 and 3 planes were. I've had controllers tell me to land short and get off the runway as quick as possible due to someone being right behind me.
Final approach speed is 155 knots when you have 1000lbs fuel or less. Every 100lbs over 1000lbs fuel they must add 1 knot. Usually when they land, fuel consumption around 1500-2000 lbs. 1gallon JP4 = 6.5lbs. Internal fuel 583 gallons, centerline tank 150 gallons
ahahaha, look at the Ruskies... This is crazy... War exercises against the "Russians." BTW, I know for a fact that many so-called "enemy-nations" use the F-5 as their primary fighter.
The F-5 never gets old. Very cool to see our Navy and Marines keeping this aircraft alive.

Never get enough of the F-5's. Greatest little fighters ever!
I had the privilege of flying in 00 with VMFT-401 back in 2002. What a sweet ride. The things those pilots go through is crazy. My hat is off to them.

Hey! Same birds and paint scheme as in DCS World! Love it! Best bird for me in the sim.
@336kgf The 2 seaters are F5 F models
I love the F-5E! It's like a sports car compared to the bigger jets.

An agile and impressive aircraft, now used for USN-USMC air combat training
F-5 is a legend. Very good looking aircraft really
F-5s may be old but they still look awesome.
The F-5 is hot chit... Cheap to fly, cheap to keep... Plenty out there to buy up from allies, before they realize the true value.
that tiger B still is one of the top sexiest most gorgeous fighter planes ever.
great video as always sir! I never knew about the nose gear raising before take off..
1:30 at the back seat of VMFT-401 bird you can see guy called "Coochie". He is one of the pilots in great documetary called Speed and angels.
I thought they weren't flying F-5s anymore. Or am I wrong? I think the 2 seater is a T-38.
All my buddies work that plane! Rah.
What's the 2 seated F-5 doing along with the two 1 seated F-5s ? I was expecting each F-5 to have a single seat.
2 seats for training
@nathanairchimesP135R They are Aggressor Squadrons, so they try and be the bad guys when practicing dog fighting. They are painted up that way so you can tell they are aggressors jets and not some one from your squadron

How do you know all this...is it because parts and maintain is less money
Fantastic alas volantes
Beautiful, I lovethe F-5. Put two aces in a dogfight against eachother. One ina an F-5 and one in a SU-27. Who wins? Exactly...F-5 : )
Jeremias Drumond
F-5E has radar, SU-27 doesn't.
So dogfight won't happen. The F-5 fire the sidewinder and turn around.
thanks for the info
how did you get so close???
It’s called zoom
Not quite. Same basic airframe but F-5 has more powerful engines and the ability to carry weapons and drop tanks.
Why the red stars in the tails?
Fernando Mendes Aggressor training? Makes them look like old Soviet fighters?
No. It's only symbolic, and nobody at the squadron would call them aggressors. It is or was "fleet advisory squadron" now it is composition squadron. Oh, how do I know? I worked there for 10 years.

@CAPTJACKAUBREY69 to be fair, they're based on the same design and look a hell of a lot alike :P

I noticed that the second F-5 has two seats.
