I have no idea why I find this content so interesting, because I have never even seen a paramotor up close. But man, when watching your videos it seems like such a great passion to have in your life!
Why wouldn't you have a reserve? Seems like no downsides to me, other than having to pay for one and maintain it, which seems minimal for something that could very well save your life.
I give you a lot of respect for making this video. This right here is the main thing i think about every time I watch you fly. It's incredible, majestic, and awe inspiring and yet seeming fragile and tenuous. Send it.
As one of those amputees mentioned. Here as a non vet but to support the Resurgence PPG cause. The sponsorship of the veteran candidate here at AviatorPPG was a pleasure to be part of. Hoping more people realize the beneficial impact of the program. Was nice having a chance to meet you Tucker and Jaclyn. Also meant a lot to me to have you there for first flights. Awesome video as always too!! Thanks for the inspiration!!!!!!
I can't thank you enough for your generous support and sponsorship of Sean-Michael. You have given such a great gift to a vet and the PPG community. Thank you.
Thanks for the video Tucker. I was taught one final step after the "Throw". That was to haul back in on the bridle lines...it was to accomplish two things. First, "IF" the reserve did not come out of its container...time would be saved hauling it back to you for a second attempt. and secondly...if the reserve container did release, the pulling motion would serve to open the reserve chute a little sooner, thus saving valuable time between Earth and you. I hope this helps., Thanks again for all your videos...they are fantastic and very informative.
I love it! VERY useful....great vid! That's how I pack mine as well. Those steerable ones are different and NOT easy to do right. I'd have those professionally repacked....but these are both great reserves and are easy to repack. Good stuff!
I did a repack clinic with a local PG group which was very valuable for the throw and repack. I'm due again as well. I have an Ozone Angel 140 which is amazingly large for how small it compacts.
Sorry if these questions have already been asked/answered but didn't want to read all 214 comments.... 1) That caribiner... is that REALLY all there is connecting the reserve to the weight of the paramotor + human + G forces as the reserve opens and pulls against those weights dynamically pulling on it? 2) The pack didn't open when you threw it... you said it would have if it had been actually up in the air... is that because the wind whipping it around would open it?
Hey Tucker, Thanks for the great information. If possible, I'd like to see the parachute pack, unedited in its slow, regular speed format so we can see in detail the steps you're taking to re-pack. Cheers fella.
Good vid, T-Bird. I always wanted to repack my reserve, but I think I will leave it to the pros until I can get some formal training, which I hope I can get during SIV this May.
Your videos are therapeutic in a way, I can see how paramotoring might be something a vet might want to get into, as I plan on buying one ASAFP! I wonder if a dirt bike exhaust would be mountable to the two stroke behind my head too. My old Yamaha always did sound better in the air :P
I’d definitely pull by hand the last elastic ring section - between the actual parachute and the white lines… After seen the vid where the guy just throws it and it doesn’t open. Fortunately his second reserve did open. I get a feeling that sometimes the airstream is not strong enough to open the chute.
On repack you also need to check the lines to the parachute for being tangled.....just pull them apart before you start the folding and "fluffing" process....sometimes those lines stick.....and that last fold of the parachute before stuffing it, do it the opposite way...let's the parachute open more quickly.
Out of curiousity are there any reserve toss clinics ? Maybe a day event somewhere where you get in one of those gyro chairs (3 axis jobby) where your buddies give you a good spin and then someone randomly calls out “toss”. Obviously using a dummy chute or one that’s tied off. Video it as I’m sure everyone can do a deep analysis after whilst watching and drinking a few brewskies !!
I was taught velcro's grip can get tighter and tighter over time, so release and reset it occasionally. Then It may not take as much force to seperate when you do need to use it.
30 years ago my chute throwing was done in a gym being thrown around by a couple of attached ropes . simulating severe disorientation . Then afterwards was chute repacking with new rubber bands .
Hi Tucker You're right about having to disable the wing. However, trying to do a B stall when you're in that kind of a wonky situation is not a good idea. Best is to concentrate on only one side and grab the wing to you as fast as possible.
Nice video, my reserve needs a repack soon. Never fly without mine. Loved your podcast. Anthony is such a nice chap and I saw that you finally met at AviatorPPG yesterday..
A good argument to why not have one is: It can happen that you throw it unintentionally. Like during a launch or something when your wing is perfectly inflated. Then it can be a serious problem. That being said, I defenatly preffer flying with a reserve :-)
GREAT ! ( Just finished another comment to you. And found their info . Super.) YES, now this ol Navy Para- Rigger (59-82 ) is now convinced- I will get a reserve ! SO - You are saying pull down on brakes as to totally collapse the wing , Right ?! ( I am flying a Grashopper cart from Air ParaMo from Inst Mo Shelton in Maricpo, AZ. Good friend, great family - I gave his super kids some survival training skills. ) Mel Mel - Deweese in.G. Jct., W. Co.
Good morning tucker. ( 630 am right now, here in Nova Scotia. ) I know your always looking for new video ideas. How about a detailed video explaining the difference in hang point set ups and there affects. I am new to the sport and cant seem to find a lot of information ( from anyone credible ) on this topic. Thanks in advance, and keep up the great work and sharing new info as you get it. I believe you are bring the sport mainstream and attracting a lot of new people to the sport.
"I won't even try to tell you how to fly a paramotor but I will vaguely teach you how to pack an emergency chute (that could save your life,) that leaves you confused.." -Tucker Gott
@@BasketCase Yep, seen that.. But I'd like to see something a little more like a long distance round trip planning with winds at different altitudes etc..
Did you see how hard was to pull the reserve out of the container? Our friends at #BaiucaSports have figured out a new container with zippers that do not get harder to open with the time. Also, as a skydiver and pro packer, don't you find it weird that the lines are folded inside the bag and not outside? Keep the sweet videos coming
In Europe maybe in US too,we have great parashute with the small rocket " its heavy and expensive but it can save you life at even 20m high, about 30/50feet...wana get that soon but its like 1500dol...
Good Stuff! I re-packed my reserve a couple of weeks ago. I cannot say you did anything wrong, however I suggest tossing in an open area. Your garage is nice, but it is far too small. My Paraglider club hangs from basketball hoops for a toss. We then pack as a "Party". Not this year, but most years. :) Having it fully deploy is important to know your technique is good. If you can chuck it far enough to get it out of the D-Bag, you've had a good toss. I love your content, and your merch. Keep it up! Blue Skies & Fly in Peace (>*
Tucker, do you carry any type of survival items in your kit? Some of your videos are over some remote terrain and just curious if you had to do an emergency landing in a non-ideal location.
Dude! Let’s Talk a little bit about that awesome coffee machine. When you make it back down to central Florida, hit me up and we can do some Sailplane flying out west of Disney. Great job on the video. Safe travels.
So when I was a kid, I had some of those plastic paratrooper toy soldiers with the little 12" vinyl "parachute". About 50% of the time after I packed those little guys and tossed 'em off the roof, they'd stay gift wrapped all the way to impact in the sand box or next to the parked bicycles. Should I just send mine out to a pro?
Official reserve procedure: Decide, Look/Reach, Pull, Look, Throw. In a situation midair/weather/fire can be disorienting: Once you deploy, you lose control, so decide: Wait? Over water/powerlines/altitude: make a firm decision; may benefit from a delay or may require immediacy. You may be in an unusual attitude, so visually locate/grab handle. Commit to using necessary force to remove diaper from pack. Look for clear air: you may be spinning/tangled (another wing)/inverted: find or attempt to predict a clear throw toward outside of rotation. Throw hard/pull on bridle again if necessary, to separate diaper/facilitate inflation. Hang glider pilot since 1972 speaking.
Hey Tucker Great to see the video on reserves. It is a topic not often discussed. If you and Jacqueline need a break enroute to Winterhaven, stop by Wildwood. Id love to take you out for a meal. PM me.
You you cut your hair?! I think I'm having psychological dissonance...the quantum flux of possibilities that make reality just inverted! "It's full of stars!"... Tucker's hair, proof that other dimensions of reality exist.
A reserve might not work in some situations, but not having one means you don't have that out in any sitution. It should probably be mentioned that if you have to use one, it doesn't mean you won't be injured when you land, it means you'll probably live when you land. The few times I skydived we were told that even if we did everything right, should we have to use the reserve, we would likely end up with a broken bone or two.
As a skydiver for 20 years I've never heard or observed that. It's nonsense. A skydiving reserve is just another parachute much like the one that is malfunctioning. It flys and lands the same. So no injuries.
I have a reserve on the left side and I throttle with my left hand. Loved to see your steps for tossing with the throttle hand. Should I take the time to kill engine and drop the throttle before tossing? Or, just grab and throw as soon as needed?
I have no idea why I find this content so interesting, because I have never even seen a paramotor up close. But man, when watching your videos it seems like such a great passion to have in your life!
Had an "Oh shiiiii..." moment when I saw your title - pleased to see that you were at such a low altitude
huh? he was high,in order to have time to deploy the reserve if his wing did not reinflate,,,alititude is your friend in an emergency
