I've used regular totes and for the bowing I made a wood frame that I made to fit around the top under the lip. I used 2x2 boards to make the frame and just screwed it to the totes, No bowing.
Nice!
I use these and love them! The 55 gallon bows quite a bit and I havent had one explode on me, but I know someone who has and I've always added a cheap brace around the edge. That being said, the easy fix is spending $3 on lumber and screw together a basic support frame around the top edge just below the lip. Friction from the water keeps it up, and makes it sturdy! The one I have on my porch I made a nice "Decorative" wodden "box" it sits in, and the entire pond setup with the decorations ran me less than $100.
Thanks! I’ll be actually updating this soon because it is bowed out quite a bit.
I think the 38 gallon tote would be a better option since it is smaller and a lot shorter and that one wouldn't bow as much and still relatively big for guppies. Slightly cheaper too.
What I did to stop the bowing is use cheap ratchet straps from harbor freight, one towards the top, one middle, and one bottom ratcheded to its pre filled shape and no bowing.
That amount of bowing won't matter much. But I think I'd use the lid it came with and cut the middle out then use as a top frame. It might help quite a bit. If you can get the diffuser grid in black it would be less susceptible to mold. Thanks for video 🤟
I could paint it if I cared, but I don’t lol
I will watch the bow and decide if I will make a change.
Michael's Fish Room I think it's going to work fine as you have it. You have me excited for next year. Btw, thanks for the recommendation on Can Of Cyclops. Tiny can, but it's actually a lot of product. Something the size of a bb is way more than you'd ever think. I'm freezing it in these little silicone candy molds since it says to use in a week.
Love that stuff.
I saw someone use two tubs to keep its structure and stop it from bowing
$25 for the tub & 16 for the light diffuser = $51????? I love you, man!!!! Keep up the info. My tub is fish ready and order on its way.
Thanks Jeff! Hope you like it!

, you added wrong, it's $41.00.
As an accountant... I think he rounded up as a lot of people do.

Oh, one more thing... do you run airlines from downstairs to the outside ponds or do you use a different air pump?
You clearly did not watch the video. That makes me sad.
@@MichaelsFishRoom I commented before the end of the video. My bad.

What’s not to like - cheap, quick and easy ! 👍🇬🇧💚
I know right!
Not today Rona...not today...he's fine🤣😁 thanks for all the amazing tips... Now folks get your guppies 👍🤣😁🐟 I need to go find me a snack I've been too busy doing water changes! I guess the water from the siphon hose might be considered a beverage! Everybody have a great day!
Full of nitrates! Lol
@@MichaelsFishRoom 🤪🤣
You need to build a 2 x 3 wooden frame around the Guppy Pond which would add an extra $20.00 or so... That's what I did anyway! It keeps the sides from Bulging out even more after a while! Then you can also put thin sheets of mat or sheet Insulation between the wooden frame and the tub. My two ponds have been running for over 3 years now... And my Guppies are Humongous!
Great idea!
Do you have size for each wooden frame so I can make it my own? screws? or flaps?
@@TheCupfulBoy No I just cut it all by eye.
“I’m fine , not the Rona “ 🤣
The bowing on the tub...you could run a strap or rope through the center holes on the top edge and tighten it till the sides are pulled back in. But the bowing probably doesn't bother you, huh? 👍😃🐌
It does actually. Look for an update soon!
@@MichaelsFishRoom Ok. Sorry, my bad. I thought u had said no big deal. 😁👍✌
Thank you for the heads up on this sweet deal! We have a patio that this will work awesome! Can't wait to get some guppies in there!
I know where you should get them too.
I have me some coming from Michael's Fish Room..woo hoo👍😁
Funny this video played, I was just looking at these yesterday. Bins are now $43. Great video!
Big brother.
To control temperature, it would have been good to bury the tote with it about even to the ground or an inch up. That way on hot days, the fish can go to the deeper sections and then as the night cools the fish can go to the middle or top. The sides would be stable and the tote would blend in with the soil with Marigolds or just grass around it. Duck weed for shade for the fish and your sponge filter would keep the duck weed from over taking the top. Aquatic plants would grow just fine in it.
Wow, that is a lot of work. No thanks.
@@MichaelsFishRoom Not really. About a half hour. No supports needed to stabilize the sides. Just dig the hole. Tote in. Level. Fill. You are done. You would not have to landscape it so to say. Just your cover on it. I have mine in the ground and when hot, water is cool down below for the fish. Duck weed gives good shade for them. Plus, compost when you get to much Duck Weed.
Would is be advantageous to dig a hole and put the tub into that? It doesnt have to be that deep, pehaps a few inches. I figure it would help with support and temperature control.
Too much work.
Hi micheal awesome video. Thank you for the sweet deal. I always wanted to try to do a pod outside. But I think next year I try it I learn a lot from you and your videos.
You should. It is a lot of fun and easy!
Michael's Fish Room that’s what I see when you do it. I just have half red half black fry guppies waiting for them to grow.
I really like tubbing ❤❤❤❤ IT is soo much fun.
It really is!
To make it pretty u can do a wood frame around the tub stane it or paint it whatever u prefer
That was last year.
So I was talking to my friend on the phone the other day, and I found myself using that voice you use for questions. My friend asked me where did that come from? 😂😂
Lol...that’s awesome!
Use water bucket for live stock. I used to use rubbermaid 100 gallon troughs when I kept turtles. $100, but it's not gonna break.
Cool
I love your intro, it gives me life
Thanks!
You know what Michael... I'm gonna do just that since I shop on Amazon, just about every day 😄
Thanks! I will be rolling in da moooola!
May I suggest using some straps or bungee cords to help the integrity of the 55G bin.
You may, yes.
@@MichaelsFishRoom Yeah I think the straps or bungees would be a lot easier to me at least!
@@MichaelsFishRoom makes sense
I have one. Two seasons in a row now. They are nice but bow really quick. They need to be sured up on the sides. I even bought two to sure up the sides better and it still needs to be sure up with some wood and a cinch type thingy.
Actually I added a “cinch type thingy” but will change it up a little this week and give an update.
Enjoy your videos
Thanks!
Gotta love those budget prices😍👌🏽
I do! LOL
I'm pushing my luck tonight, it's getting down to 41 degrees. Ugh.... white clouds , I think they will be alright, I hope.. 100 gallons, what are the chances that the 2 hours of 41 degree low that 100 gallons would achieve the low temp. I think the water temp will stay higher than that.. right?? I think it will stay at least 50 degrees. I need to right up some kind of thermometer.
How did they do? I bet gupps would have been ok too.
Cool beans -might go get one - just an fyi those 35 gl round pond tubs I use with the molded in shelf are 29.00 at HD - same thing at Lowes is 49.00 wtf .
I may get a few then! HD is always cheaper, and usually better stocked with better employees. (Imho)
@@MichaelsFishRoom I shop more at Lowes because of the Vet discount. Home Depot offers the same but they want me to jump through hoops to prove so I rarely shop there unless there is a huge price difference (in the case of the tubs there was lol)
Lowe’s is like 3 minutes from my house, HD 10. I like HD better.
Wow...that's a fancy blue pump👍👈
Lol
Maybe some kind of bracing acros the middle to avoid that much bowing would be useful
Maybe, but I don’t think it will be an issue.....for now lol
I bought 2 of these a month ago. I leave the tops on and cut a hole in the top it helps them from bowing out.
I’ve already done it! Lol
@@MichaelsFishRoom
Did that reduce the bowing?
With the slits already in the tub, some bracing, at least in the center would pull the center back together and provide some support to that bowing center. I would just calling it "an ounce of prevention" so to speak.
Wait until you see the update
SET THE SAME THING UP A FEW WEEKS AGO, GOT YOU BEAT ON PRICE. $21.95 AT HOME DEPOT HERE IN CONNECTICUT. STILL A BIT COLD WATER IS ONLY 72 DEGREES. PUT IT IN THE GROUND. STILL GOT TO DO SOME LANDSCAPING AROUND IT. HOW WAS YOUR WATER TEMP IN JERSEY? AFRAID TO PUT FISH IN UNTIL IT WARMS UP A BIT
I don’t check water temp anymore. The weather has been warm, although supposed be in the 50’s tonight!
I am north of you and have had fish out with no heater for three weeks - no issues
you can put rope through those holes in themiddle of the sides and pull it back together and it would add structual intregty back into it.
Thanks!
Teehee my exact same "pond" is the Blue one to the left. I think it holds 90 gallons and cheap. Good stuff Mike!
The intex mini pool I did last year?
Thanks for the idea. A 2x4 frame would make that thing much more structurally sound.
Cheers,
Chris
You are right. When will you make it for me?
If I lived around the block, I'd do it gladly 😀
@@Cgraseck Do you have size info for each wooden frame so I can make my own? screws as well?
@@TheCupfulBoy It would depend on the size of your bin. They tend to bow out along the top side of the long ends. Making a box like structure out of 2x4 that the bin would just slide into at the top would keep the sides from bowing out. I made that comment when 2x4s were cheep though. Now the project would probably be prohibitively expensive. Good luck if you decide to build something like this.
Cheers,
Chris
@@Cgraseck I am thinking building a frame referring to the size near the lifting area and restrain from bowing but not sure if I need a supporting beam to hold the frame at that height or just let the bowing do the job. If i do, the frame would drops when the water level decreases right? I am thinking just make two extra beam on the long side to keep the height
Boom.. Cheep I love cheep

I prefer the 38 gallon tote that one has less bowing issue since it is a lot shorter. Shorter also means it's easier for maintenance, cleaning, water change, and catching fish. Of course it's slightly cheaper too and 38 is big enough. The 38 also seem to look slightly more heavy duty. Not sure why. I like the footprint of the 38 more as the 55 looks too long.
Who water changes ponds? But I agree with the bowing.
@@MichaelsFishRoom Some people do perform water change in small ponds like this, similar to an aquarium. Anyway, shorter wall does make it easier for any kind of maintenance though, not just water change and of course catching fish.
I don’t do WC’s, I may top them up though.

Hey man I'm about winter soon, lows around 50 degrees at nights here in California, I have guppies and endlers in a few coolers and was wonder if they would survive at that temp?
Great video. Please tell me if the air pump is waterproof and what kind of sponge filter you are using. Also, what about rain? Thanks
No, some no name brand (you can buy them on my website though!) and what about the rain?
$41 (plus tax of course) cheap!! If it came with a lid and you never intend to use the lid, maybe carving out the center so you’re left with a frame may strengthen the sides from bowing. Nice!!
Like I said. Lol
Also did I say $41? I meant $51! (Still cheap.
Michael's Fish Room
Michael, my price comments were adding support as I thought you said 51 ... all good either way. -Michael
After watching this vid last season, I went and purchased the 27 gal HDX Tough Tote and began my mutt guppy school for spring 2021 in my garage over winter. It worked wonderful, and the guppies thrived. So about 2 weeks ago I started up my outdoor 55 gal HDX tub which once it cycled through I was going to move my garage mutt guppies outside. To my big disappointment, was as soon as I filled the 55 gal 3/4 full it started bowing out so bad. The tub was on level ground. I haven't even put in fish or plants and its not tolerating the water load'. I dont know if Mike had this problem with this tub or maybe Home Depo changed the rubber structure of the tote. But due to my experience I would be cautious using the 55 gal. As I said earlier, the 27 gal has kept its shape and has been a great small guppy tub.
Mike had the problem and used the lid with the center cut out to help support it..
@@MichaelsFishRoom that's good to know. I looked through a lot of posts and didn't see anything. Oh well, went to Tractor Supply and just bought a 40 g resin tube for $49.99. Still reasonable 👍

Haha omg I just about spit my coffee out when you showed that HUGE female. Question: is it safe to keep an air pump outside in the elements? I want to add a sponge filter to my pond but wasn't sure if I need to protect the pump from the rain.
Buy a little rubber maid container for it and it will withstand the rain and snow👌🏽
That is why I covered it. They make "outside" pumps....in fact I may have a video coming soon about one......

About winter and peak summer how do you keep them from frying in the heat
I take them in when it gets to cold. I’ve never had an issue in even 100 degree heat. You should watch all my pond videos.
How's it holding up today

What kind of plastic? The info should be on the bottom of the tub.
How would I know it has 50g of water in it now.
I set up three tubs and live deep in the woods now I have tadpoles in each tub is there risk to my African in cichlids
Yup
How stressful is it on the fish with an above ground small pond like that with temperature swings? I'm in a zone 5 (weather) location and I can see air temps over 90 and drop 20 degrees overnight and swing all over the place during the week. I'm trying outdoor fish stuff for the first time this year (you kinda made me do it watching your stuff). My ponds are currently about 25 gallons. I think the fish are struggling with temp swings. Any advice? Thanks. Will you be headed to Wisconsin again? I know you've been to my LFS here, Aquatics Unlimited.
It's not, it is a slow change. I find it makes them stronger.
No traveling for me for a while because of the pandemic.
Is a filter required?
nope, not if it is lightly stocked and has plenty of plants. You will need an airstone if i gets hot.
Hey brother, do you feed your ponds or just let them feed off the insects that fall through the light diffuser??
I feed them
What do dragonflies do???
Lay eggs, that turn into Nymphs, that eatall the fry.
Is there a filter with it?
yes

This stuff would be easier to cut, and costs far less per pond. (or something else along this line anyways) www.homedepot.com/p/3-ft-x-50-ft-Plastic-Fencing-PF-3/313568092
Also a quick suggestion is to utilize those slots on the top of the tote. Put a support form one side to the other to avoid the bowing that the water will cause. Increase the lifespan of the tote.
The holes in the fence are too big. Dragonflies can still get in. The lighting diffuser is not hard to cut at all.

I'll continue to use my screen. I use an old metal bath tub, (2) 250 gal ponds outside for my fish. Where are you located? Do you keep them outside in the winter months? I have
(2) 55, (3) tall 20, (4) 29 long, 94) 15 gal, (5) 10, and (3) 5 gal tank in my home. Why use java moss, why not guppy grass(hornwort)? In my tub, I have pickerel, lily pads, water hycinyths, blue iris's, lg duckweed and hornwort. Hornwort will actually winter over outside.
