The Temples were not located over the rock. Modifications to the Herodian-era floor of the plaza have all but hidden the correct location. It was rediscovered a few years ago when the wells started refilling, causing some tiles to be pulled up. The Sanctum Sanctorum is under one of the gazebo-like structures.

If Roman didn't destroy Solomon Temple, we might see a Jewish Synagogue, Muslim Al Aqsa Mosque, and Christian Church in the Temple Mount all stand together symbolizing brotherhood of Abrahamic religion rather than fighting each other.
That's not possible. If Romans never destroyed Solomon's House of Prayer or God didn't will it to be destroyed. Muslims and Christians will be forbidden to enter its complex, because Jews consider it very holy. Even some jews will be prohibited on some sections of the Temple and only Pure Jews will be allowed to enter.
The other main explanation holds that Abd al-Malik, in the heat of the war with Ibn al-Zubayr, sought to build the structure to divert the focus of the Muslims in his realm from the Ka'aba in Mecca, where Ibn al-Zubayr would publicly condemn the Umayyads during the annual pilgrimage to the sanctuary. Great work! I wonder, do many Muslims also believe this was the site of creation and of Abraham’s sacrifice, or are the Jewish and Islamic mythologies mutually exclusive?
Even they are disagreeing on who was almost sacrificed. Judaism (and Christianity to some extent) believe that it was Sarah's son Isaac, while Islam believes that it was Hagar's son Ishmael.

I was always curious about the Rock. I’ve even been saying it wrong, Dome on the Rock. It’s in religious limbo, with a “we got dibs” rule. Kinda reminds of the immovable ladder(zephyus). Awesome Vid.
The earliest mosques do indeed look a lot like churches. For example take a look at the Ummayad Mosque of Damascus. (Muslims believe Jesus will descend from sky onto the mosque's eastern minaret-known as the "Minaret of Jesus") Also, here is little something I once heard an Imam say regarding the "temple mount". (I'm paraphrasing from vague memory) _"When Umer(Caliph) entered Jerusalem, he entered in peace. Chief christian priest took him to the main church, and invited him to offer his prayers, but he declined saying'if i pray here, future Muslims will convert it into a mosque' and asked to be taken to the Solomon's temple. Was shown a pile of rubble instead. So he ordered construction. And then allowed Jews to settle in the city after a long period of roman rule_ _Jews call the mosque/temple/place haBet haMaqdash, whilst Muslims call it alBait alMuqaddas. It is therefore the same temple, that was prophesized to be built, and Umer, and by extension Muhammad, was the messiah who rebuilt it and allowed the Jews to live in the city once more."_
But who cares. People need to stop fighting over archaic BS, and "divine" books that don't even mention things as fundamental as germs or solar system.
Quite a bold statement there friend. Do you believe germs are just microbes that float around randomly? From your statement I'd gather you believe the universe is governed by chaos and we are the product of random mutation? I personally believe microbial life is product of or at least the effect of interdimensional life...which many traditions and religious texts do mention. The solar system as well as a vast cosmos is common theme too (unless you're a fundamentalist Christian/flat earther) so not sure where you got that idea...
@@SunOfG0D microbial life is just an evolution of natural elements, and so we are. Microbes weren't spawned out of another dimension lol, we don't even have any proof that extra dimensions exist other than in specific math equations that are being used to study the universe.
I visited the Dome back in 1981, as a non practicing Jew. That evening, upon returning to the home of my Jewish hosts, they threw me out. In my heart, I felt drawn to stand where the first and second temples stood. Jerusalem enflames the passions of everyone. The trick is to keep your head low and be ready to duck or run.
the thing is that jews aren't allowed to go there because of many reasons. in judaism we aren't allowed to enter mosques and churches. and also this being our holiest site and there were places that we were prohibited from going to which is why there are signs there saying that jews better off not entering.
Very good video! My wife and I had the privilege of entering the Dome (in addition to the Al-Aqsa mosque) in 1996 and spent quite some time there! Sadly, the 2nd Intifada later prohibited non-Muslims for entry... It's great one of your references is Jodi Magness! My wife and I are currently on staff with her at an archaeological dig in Galilee (for the past 10 years) We heartily endorse her work!!!

Humanity as a unified wholeness is the temple which is why the temples have fallen into disrepair. An easy solution seems to be so apparent when all faith ideologies can be appreciated for their depth in meaning within the souls of the passerbys who listen with their hearts. A soul is saved within a composite of absolutions, encapsulated at its own willingness in time as it passes through the needle. I find love as commonality in the expressive art each of these structures breathes into its lungs. I wish more architects, artists, and designers would collaborate in storytelling for all of the cultures and races that make up humanity. Perhaps lending space in every country to share inspiration and appreciation. Every human is exquisite, imagine a world where you felt a sense of home and family anywhere.

It's amazing how everyone seems to glaze over a really important bit of history. The "Rock" which everyone keeps claiming as the 3rd holiest site for Islam.... well this site is the no. 1 holiest place in Judaism. Everyone speaks of the "Rock" yet you forget to mention that 4000 years ago (2600 years before there was a Mohamed or a religion called Islam) our forefather Abraham prepared his son Isaac for sacrifice on that rock and eventually made the covenant with God for circumcision of all Jewish males.... 2950 years ago (1550 years before there was a Mohamed or a religion called Islam) Solomon The Wise built the first Temple on the exact site.... in fact the Al-Aqsa Mosque only exists because the Israelites had previously prepared the site for building.....
Wow, fascinating video! I was curious, Mecca and The Dome of the rock both prohibit most non-muslims from entering (as you've said in this video). Is this similarly seen in Judaism, and why is this not the case in Christianity (as far as I'm aware)?
Entrance to the inner court of the Jewish temples was only permitted to Jews who had gone through ritual purification. If I'm not mistaken, the outer court was open to all, but maybe only Jews whether pure or not. There were a few rings, each getting more restrictive - up to the holy of holies as mentioned in the video. In current day Jewish holy sites and synagogues there are no restrictions on access, and non-Jews can even potentially observe during prayer services.
Well, a lot of churches, particularly Catholic churches Orthodox churches, and some Lutheran Churches don't allow unbelievers to take part in communion. That's the most similar thing Christianity has to not allowing non-believers to go to a certain place pr take part in activities. However, even that is not a universal thing, since most Protestant churches will allow anyone who comes into it take part in communion, though anyone who is an unbeliever probably won't get much out of it. Christians have no need for ritual purity, since Christians believe that the presence and spirit of God is in the hearts of all Christian people, not confined and Christians believe that we are free in Christ to go anywhere we please. After Jesus was crucified, there was a small earthquake and the shroud that covered the entrance to the Holy of Holies in the 2nd Temple was ripped in half, which is taken as a sign that that's no longer a "no-go zone," so to speak.
Gavers23 Just for clarification, in temple times there was a "Court of the Gentiles" on Temple Mount. A notice has been found, written in Greek, stating effectively do not pass this point on pain of death. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_Warning_inscription Back in those days there were no Christians and Muslims so the warning applied only to pagans.
It is, like almost everything, still debated among Jewish religious authority, but generally speaking - there is no limit on gentiles joining Jews in prayer, synagogues and, when it was active, the Great Temple. There are only three limitations: Gentiles can't be counted towards the minimum of 10 Jews needed for "public prayer", they can't enter the inner circle of the temple, and they can't participate in the public reading of the Torah done on Saturdays (they can attend, but can't read out loud)
Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that earlier Muslims are supposed to have faced Jerusalem during their prayers before it was changed to Mecca?
You are one great guy, that is for sure. I admire your work, keep it up. Maybe one day we will all live as one, you certainly would've contributed to it if so.
Thank you. I heard that the ummiyad khalifa who built it was not in control of Hijaz, was in conflict with it's rulers and did not want people from the Levant (who were loyal to him and many were new converts to Islam, some from Christianity) to go to pilgrimage to Mecca and be influenced to turn against him by the rulers of Hijaz. So, he built this shrine to give them an alternative for their pilgrimage. This video has evidence to back up the assumption. Thank you. Great channel too.
The dome of the rock (haram al-shariif), has nothing to do with the Umayyads. It was first built in the reign of Umar ibn Khattab (the 2nd Khalif after Abubakar) after the conquest of Jerusalem. Umayyads and other rulers may have extended or rebuilt after earthquakes on various occasions.

I hope the Holy Temple is rebuilt as soon as possible. Whithout it the world is incomplete. And there's no radicalism about it. Jewish tradition needs a functioning temple to be whole. And no orthodox Jew disagree that the temple must be built in that exact spot. The only discussion is how.
@@davidcohenboffa1666it’s all a bunch of radicals who want to destroy a 1400 year old monument just to satisfy their petty beliefs of something that was destroyed 2000 years ago
@@davidcohenboffa1666building the temple without a messiah present? Lol. Most orthodox and rabbinic scholars and authorities all agree it should be built in the era of the messiah, by divine providence. Jews who disagree are in the minority. Like Maimonides.
@otlatoca4004 That is a dire mistake. Mimonides writes building the Temple as a positive commandament (so we must fulfil such commandament) and the Jerusalem Talmud says the Temple will be built before Messiah comes. There is even a Midrash that the Messiah will reveal himself on the rooftop of the Temple, which means the Temple will be rebuilt before he comes..... If you want more sources, see Navhmanides, Ramhal. A midrash will miraculous doings can't deny the fulfillment of a commandment from the Torah. If such a contradiction happens we MUST understand the Midrash figuratively. Btw, the idea that the Temple will descendents from the sky is also a minority opinion of Rashi. And there's also a discussion if such an opinion is valid in Halachah bc it is written in his commentary on the Torah, not on any Halachic work.
Thank you for your honest description of what may have been and not about the religious ‘facts‘. There are many stories but all of them may be considered altered from the truth. You also mentioned some openings oriented toward the Mecca. Well, it may be true that this location was the ancient Kaba-not Mecca-as this is now considered as truth. Maybe that real Kaba was Petra... who knows.
"Jesus answered: Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many... so when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ as spoken of through the prophet Daniel then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains... For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible. See, I have told you in advance...So if they tell you, ‘There He is in the desert,’ do not go out..." (Matthew 24; Mark 13; Luke 21)
Thank you. Very concise. I have heard it said that the "Temple Mount" was in fact not the site of the Temple but the massive Roman Garrison Fort, that building and engineering works attributed to Herod, around Israel / Palestine, were in fact Roman works, done around his time in 'office' for the sake of their infrastructure of occupation. It is suggested the true Temple Site is in fact outside the Mount, in the City of David area. It is also suggested that a Church stood where the Dome of the Rock now stands, marking a part of the area of Roman control where Jesus, Yeshua, was taken before his death. What do you think?

The first temple (Solomon's temple) was just outside of the City of David and uphill since the ascent of the Psalms was sung during processions. . The second temple (Zerubbabel's/ Ezra's temple) may or may not have been built in the same location or in the same design as Solomon's temple. King Herod the Great built the Antonia Fortress uphill from his rebuilt/refurbished temple. It isn't know if his temple was built around or next to the second temple. We do know that the temple platform (terrace) was expanded and that the courts were enlarged. We also do not know the exact design of "Herod's temple" The diorama in the archeological park in Jerusalem was the archaeologist's best guess regarding the style of the temple (designed like a Canaanite building of the first temple era). The attached Fort Antonia, in the display, is not proportionately big enough to have housed about 6,000 Romans, their stores of food, weapons, exercise yards, etc.. Some people think that the area of the Dome of the Rock is the Antonia Fortress and that the temple was located further south.

I have read an article which points out the dome of the rock could be a Roman mausoleum because of the octagonal shape. Please remember mausoleum of Suleiman the Magnificent is based on dome of the rock. (also the mausoleum contains pieces of black stone from Kaaba, which is stone worship maybe?) It could be possible the dome of the rock was built on an existing mausoleum. However I couldn't find more study on this.

Closer to Al Aqsa right?
No. The southern court was always largest, since worshippers entered from the southern city of David.
I was so much impressed by the knowledge of the reporter than what I saw in the presentation. I love the video & picked some about the place to think about. He is good.

Thank you for your research pictorials and positive intelligence.
I would love to visit this beautiful building one day. Thank you for the excellent tour and history about the Dome. 🙏
The dome is so beautiful and rigid ,as if it will never collapse.
Thank you so very much for the tour and the information as to the integrative historical perspectives on the Dome of the Rock from all 3 Abrahamic Traditions!!! If only we could appreciate one another's reverence for our Common Roots and ancestors appreciation for this Beloved Site... without arguing our own grievances and 'superiority' claims.
Your work makes it possible for me to at least understand the commonalities better without the blinding smokescreen of burning effigies of those with whom I actually likely have few fundamental differences.

I understand that Scripture, my friend. But I also understand that Yeshua Ha'Moshiach stated that these would be times such as the days of Jonah as well.
Taking absolutely Nothing away from Judah, Jerusalem and Israel; we recognize that The LORD has Above All Else a Holy Heart of Compassion for the Lost... Even Nineveh. To wit, He pursued Jonah with storm and a great fish to Re-deliver him to The LORD's Holy Purposes of Repentance even to Her inhabitants, because of His Lovingkindness.
Vengeance is His Alone, and my task per the words of Christ Himself is to Love; 1st- The LORD my G0D, with all my heart, my soul and my mind, then my neighbor as myself, and lastly... those who are not only His enemies, but my own... all the while refusing to Compromise with the world system of harlotry, idolatry and self righteousness that sets itself up against the Knowledge of Almighty G0D through Christ Jesus.
These days that seems a tall order, what with Rome occupying every corridor, catacomb and causeway, but in the fires of adversity, the dross and chaff are consumed, leaving only the gold, silver, precious stone and wheat through which our Beloved Lord's Table is set in the presence of our enemies, my friend.
Grace and peace, to Jerusalem and to the whole earth, which Is The LORD's and All It contains.

Great work! I wonder, do many Muslims also believe this was the site of creation and of Abraham’s sacrifice, or are the Jewish and Islamic mythologies mutually exclusive?
Being raised in muslim family, I've never been told creation was happened in here.
Even they are disagreeing on who was almost sacrificed. Judaism (and Christianity to some extent) believe that it was Sarah's son Isaac, while Islam believes that it was Hagar's son Ishmael.
Maybe?
@@y__h Christians believe in the God revealed in Judaism so they did not write their own history and instead use the exact same scriptures used in Judaism. In another video, RFB explains that Christians didn't see themselves as a separate religion but were looking to reform Judaism.
In shory, Christians believe it was Isaac.
Yes they believe in the Torah...Abraham Isaac and Jacob...but they are from the seed of Ishmael..they were not blessed to know the Only True God...they were cast out !! So their Allah...is actually Satan...and their Anti Christ is Jesus !!

Well its his job to know stuff like that as an archeologist , being a certen religion or nationality or whatever doesnt make you an expert automatically. A lot of problems is created when people think like that.
I was always curious about the Rock. I’ve even been saying it wrong, Dome on the Rock. It’s in religious limbo, with a “we got dibs” rule. Kinda reminds of the immovable ladder(zephyus). Awesome Vid.
Excellent job. Very informative and great video.
Stunning and Beautiful. History matters. ❤
The earliest mosques do indeed look a lot like churches. For example take a look at the Ummayad Mosque of Damascus. (Muslims believe Jesus will descend from sky onto the mosque's eastern minaret-known as the "Minaret of Jesus")
Also, here is little something I once heard an Imam say regarding the "temple mount". (I'm paraphrasing from vague memory)
_"When Umer(Caliph) entered Jerusalem, he entered in peace. Chief christian priest took him to the main church, and invited him to offer his prayers, but he declined saying'if i pray here, future Muslims will convert it into a mosque' and asked to be taken to the Solomon's temple. Was shown a pile of rubble instead. So he ordered construction. And then allowed Jews to settle in the city after a long period of roman rule_
_Jews call the mosque/temple/place haBet haMaqdash, whilst Muslims call it alBait alMuqaddas.
Allah split the moon. Evidence enough
Nice story, but Omar unfortunately failed to follow the design as set out in Jewish Literature.
They threw you out for having visited the Dome? How callous and bigoted..
the thing is that jews aren't allowed to go there because of many reasons.
in judaism we aren't allowed to enter mosques and churches.
and also this being our holiest site and there were places that we were prohibited from going to which is why there are signs there saying that jews better off not entering.

Al-Aqsa Mosqua IS NOT the Dome of the Rock!!!! It is a seperate masjid on the temple mount is where the night journey and prayer took place.
@Aaaatshu as a westerner we are taught the dome of the rock is al aqsa but thats not true
@Lance Gin yes pls do it...

The whole thing surrounded by a wall is called the aqsa mosque, including the dome of the rock, AL-masjid al-qibli, and Al-musalla al-marouani

Its just an embellished standard "Roman" mausoleum, there are dozens of these extant in both the Western and Eastern part of the former empire in different shapes and forms.
It's beautiful sacred and classic architecture and hope it will be preserved for future generations.
Just discovered this channel + videos, looks like I’m a few years late to the occasion 😆
Nevertheless, this is an amazing video. Even thought it is fairly short, imho its highly informative and straight to the point as well.
Not only that, imho it is also one of the most highly neutral video about Dome of the Rock.
Just wondering if you have plan to cover the adjacent Al-Aqsa Mosque in a detailed manner through a separate video. This is because the mosque also have a special place in Islam, thought it could be an interesting subject to cover. 🤔
Regardless of that, keep up the good work. Looking forward to see new videos soon. 🙏
Quite informative, indeed. Thank you!
I don't know if you read comments, but could you do a video about near death experiences in different faiths? I am very fascinated with this topic and have been binge watching your channel the last three days since I found it!
For the record, I am Roman catholic, but I find the topic fascinating as it plays on both religious experiences and our poor understanding of death as a medical process. Thanks!

Really good stuff, as usual.
How do they vet who is a muslim or not? Is it an honesty policy or is their a person at the door to quiz you on the quran?
There are two points. First walking up the tourist entrance, the Israeli guards ask you. Then again the Waqf guards at the door asked us again. Other than outward signs like a hijab or kippah, though, I suppose they can’t prove it.
@Siyovaxsh En-sipad-zid-ana I went last year, and if I remember correctly they see your id before entering the city. But there wasn't any security checks near the kaaba
In many countries that have Muslim majority it’s actually on your ID and based on what your parents list on your paperwork.

Mash'Allah rock of dome & masjid al Aqsa are absolutely stunning.as I am watching this video I am only 50 metres from rock of the dome sat in courtyard...
3rd holiest site for Sunni Islam.
I’m atheist but I’ve always loved mythology/theology and learning about other religions is fun!
Gavers23
Just for clarification, in temple times there was a "Court of the Gentiles" on Temple Mount. A notice has been found, written in Greek, stating effectively do not pass this point on pain of death.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_Warning_inscription
Back in those days there were no Christians and Muslims so the warning applied only to pagans.
It is, like almost everything, still debated among Jewish religious authority, but generally speaking - there is no limit on gentiles joining Jews in prayer, synagogues and, when it was active, the Great Temple. There are only three limitations:
Gentiles can't be counted towards the minimum of 10 Jews needed for "public prayer", they can't enter the inner circle of the temple, and they can't participate in the public reading of the Torah done on Saturdays (they can attend, but can't read out loud)
Anyone is allowed to go to the Wailing Wall (the holiest place for Jews) and the tomb of Abraham is split between Jews and Muslims.
Great vid, very interesting! Loved how you dissecties the history of this sheine!
Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that earlier Muslims are supposed to have faced Jerusalem during their prayers before it was changed to Mecca?
Jeff Stinson ... U are absolutely correct pal.

Very clear!

The first temple (Solomon's temple)
was just outside of the City of David

Psalms was sung during processions.
.
The second temple (Zerubbabel's/
Ezra's temple) may or may not have
been built in the same location or
in the same design as Solomon's
temple.
King Herod the Great built the Antonia
Fortress uphill from his rebuilt/refurbished
temple. It isn't know if his temple was
built around or next to the second temple.
We do know that the temple platform
(terrace) was expanded and that the
courts were enlarged. We also do not
know the exact design of "Herod's temple"
The diorama in the archeological park
in Jerusalem was the archaeologist's
best guess regarding the style of the
temple (designed like a Canaanite
building of the first temple era).
The attached Fort Antonia, in the display,
is not proportionately big enough to have
housed about 6,000 Romans, their stores

I have read an article which points out the dome of the rock could be a Roman mausoleum because of the octagonal shape. Please remember mausoleum of Suleiman the Magnificent is based on dome of the rock. (also the mausoleum contains pieces of black stone from Kaaba, which is stone worship maybe?) It could be possible the dome of the rock was built on an existing mausoleum. However I couldn't find more study on this.
Not really clear on what it was but the Dome of the Rock preserves at its core some Roman building of Hadrian's Temple complex.
