🕺🏼💃🕺🏼💃Rumi mentioned! Let’s goooo! Sufism has inspired so much in the western world. My first exposures to it were through Kim Stanley Robinson’s sci-fi writings (the Mars trilogy), and the “Christian” band mewithoutYou. I’ve always found it’s mystical aspects interesting and intriguing.
Thank you for making a well-detailed and highly informative video on Sufism despite its short length. My English is average so I had a some difficulties in understanding several words but the way you use them in context, their meanings become easy to guess. God bless you!
You have delivered again angela this video was very enlightening. Ive always been fascinated by islamic culture in all its facets.. plus your production value has gone up significantly and it shows, now i can see the beautiful witchy scholar in hd ❤
I am a Anderson Feri Tradition initiate ( American Traditional Witchcraft with esctatic aspects). My boyfriend is a Rahaniyat Sufi and I will be studying soon myself. Not converting, simply adding to my practice something that resonates. Wonderful video!

💃 Religious syncretism and evolution is all fine and good, but historically divorcing Sufism and Islam could only be motivated by asinine politics and bigotry. Where do these people think zhikr comes from? Just because Islamic practice and sufism have streams of influence from exogenous sources doesn't mean sufism wasn't or isn't primarily Islamic. That would be like saying Christianity is only neoplatonism or only Judaism.
It's "primarily islamic" where you risk having your head cut off or being hung. You can't deny the impact threatening people, their families, communities with violence & torture has. Same with Christianity & all other religions. Islam makes wonderful camouflage so that you can practice your actual spiritual beliefs.
Yes, you can't have sufism without Islam. However, since salafism hit the mainstream and modern Islamic orthodoxy, it does give sufism the feel of a new kind of Islam when it really isn't.
Sulfism is not widely known about in America. How ever I have met Sufi practitioners and found them to be very interesting people. Thank you for your insight on this religious order.🥰
💃🏾 I have been a fan of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan since the late 90's. Hazrat Inayat Khan's books are quite interesting. Thank you. Will listen to some quawwali music today.
Sufism is the true spiritual aspect of Islaam. The more a Muslim becomes devoted, one naturally becomes more and more spiritual, building a connection and relationship with the one and only Creator of all creations (Allaah). Sufism is the Islamic science of ones spiritual journey. It encompasses your spiritual knowledge and experiences which acts as your guide to forever help you on your path, your journey in your relationship with the almighty (Allaah).
Will you be selling "Perennialism Alert!" stickers in the future? I'd love to have some...particular organizations might do well to have such warnings posted on them. ;) I am glad you mentioned Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as well--while I can't agree with some of the actual lyrics used in his songs, his musicianship is undeniable. 💃💃💃
That was beautiful, thank you. You can also try to expand on this topic of Global Sufism by interviewing someone like Mark Sedgwick or Prof. Marcia K. Hermansen, who both worked on Global Sufism. 🥰
I'm sure you're already aware of Filip Holm's discussions of Sufism and Islam over on Let's Talk Religion, but in case you weren't I'll mention it now. 🕺💃
🕺 Thank you, Dr. Angela! Specially thank you for the perennialism alert! By watching the historic and academic fatcs through your yt channel, I've become more aware of the specifics of every practice, doctrine and beliefs. Sufi music, dance and literature are beautiful! See you next time! 👋 😃
I was expecting maybe more on brotherhoods fenomenon? For example about René Guénon and such whit the esoteric / brotherhood / initiation kind of approach essentially following Ibn al rabi in the confreerie Shadhiliyyah or so. I say this cause till today it had spread mpact allover while interested in incorporating (while curating?) various local religious myths . However, these are lines that I guess pretend to still be mystical and not deviated, while is debatable Thank U. Love. Keep it up.
🕺 💃 sometimes, I'm genuinely confused if you're saying this or these, but then I think of how my Italian friend would say something and I get it and feel a certain familiarity/miss my friend
Sufism is just an Islamified version of the traditional EGYPTIAN mystical tradition. Out of all the various pre-Islamic cultures and philosophies mentioned in these comments, nobody has mentioned the most obvious one.
Unpopular comment: Islam would be better off across the world for all muslims and non muslims if they seeked personal union, love or iternal knowledge with allah then through their local Imams and Dogma of the Quran.
🕺🏻 From Sep. 2018 to Oct. '19 I was part of a Sufi group in Cape Town called 'The Sufi Movement' founded by Hazrat Inayat Khan; they offered books, only those written by Inayat Khan himself, and they offered in-person group-study sessions -- typically lead by elders of the group, who were only two degrees removed from Inayat Khan in terms of succession -- of the writings of The Master on spiritual subjects etc; this organisation had branches/nodes/cells/affinity groups across several locations in South Africa and abroad; one detail mentioned in passing by Murshid (a title of Khan's) was that the word 'Sufi' derives from the Greek word 'Sophia', this is why I made this post: Sufism derives from Gnosticism -- see Dr. Puca's opening remarks on how Sufism emphasises direct, experiential knowledge.☺
Be very wary of Sufi groups who are centralized around one singular Sufi’s beliefs. Sufism is a study that requires a diverse understanding of all aspects of Sufi thought. Every Sufi is tasked with finding their own path. You can’t follow the same footsteps twice.
I gotta say sufism is purely islamic and has no earlier roots, although it has adopted alot from neo-platonian, iranian and indian philosophies. non islamic sufism, as far as I know, is purely a new age and western thing. My knowledge is mostly based on reading the OG books and practicing sufism. Its basic premises, goals and practices can all be traced to Qoranic verses. And, to the best of my knowledge, trying to link sufism to pre-islamic gnostic traditions has become disregarded as a theory in academic literature. And meditations, dance, music etc. are not that common in sufism, most sufist simply pray alot, and try to align their behaviours with islamic law.
Thank you for this view into the middle east. But it makes me wonder how they fair against the factions of Islam that suppress music in almost All forms..🤔 And especially seems to be against any form of westernization of religion and thought. Plus I wonder about their connection and integration of the khoron into the religion?..🕺
Just straight off the bat you say sufism offers a stark contrast to the orthodox islamic emphasis on emulating the prophet... most sufi orders place a really high importance on emulating the prophet, the naqshbandi haqqani order performs sunnahs that are pretty much forgotten. They go above and beyond to emulate the prophet as some of their goals are annihilation with the sheikh, annihilation with the prophet then annihilation with God. The direct personal experience comes through this kind of emulation not instead of it.

I APOLOGIZE!!! Most if not All of this has little to do with the Study of Magic.!!! Just social questions and critiques.. Hehe🤗 Sorry!🙏🏾
Not taking part in what is not allowed in a place of worship and having people lower the abusive volume is not suppressing.
As a rule, Sufis have required complete belief in Al Quran.
