N&W 1218 on Suwanee Steam Special, November 1987, from Jacksonville to Valdosta and return. Highlights of the excursion plus bonus shots from the ferry trips.
I rode on one of these trips as a teen not long out of high school, I can even spot myself leaning out of one of the windows of the car behind the tool car. Such a shame they couldn't get the night ride down to Jax, as that felt like being IN an O Winston Link photo. I had this on VHS for many years, thanks for uploading it here!
@@maxwellwalcher6420 That it was that large, has an N&W hooter whistle on it, and could pick up and move at passenger speeds. I had family who saw these in action and I grew up listening to my uncle talk about seeing them in the coal fields
I think Frank Collins was already gone and retired by that time after the 611 and 1218 side by side convention excursion out of Roanoke to Radford,VA that summer in 1987. Bob Saxtan and Jack Taylor had just taken over full time duties as NS steam road foremen and engineers on the 1218 and 611 until the very end of it in 1994.
Is it possible that I can use this video for my documentary about the Southern Railway Steam Program? I will credit you in the description. Thanks in advance~Joseph
@@maxwellwalcher6420 1218? VERY big. The N&W would use a single one to move a whole battalion of men AND EQUIPMENT in WW2! See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_and_Western_Railway_class_A -- weight 573,000 pounds without the tender, 5400 hp (bigger than almost any Diesel loco even today), tractive effort 114,000 lbf.
This is the music that I fall asleep to. I hope in my life time I can experience her alive and full of steam.
did you love Number 1218.
1218 is A Magnificent Piece of equipment, I really hope someday she could make a return
WOW... God I miss her. Hope to see her run again in my life time
Great footage! Some of the best 1987 coverage I could find on RUclips.

what a big locomotive.
Awesome footage
The most beautiful whistle ever she’s a real beauty especially at speed . My other favorite is the FL9 with the hanancock air whistle
To be honest ... her horn sounds like a german steamers horn.
Look for a class 44 or class 50. They sound similar. Maybe bit less powerfull.
what did you like on Number 1218.

@@BlueRidgeCritter Sure is! For 39 years now.
@@BlueRidgeCritter did you like Number 1218 and did you like it's whistle.
@@maxwellwalcher6420 1218 was great but I have to be honest -- I found the whistle to be kind of odd.
@@KD5XB you have cool number 1218 and number 611 will be running on the N&W again.

Yes, of course
The engineer's don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954 keep watching trackside.
Is this your personal footage? Epic materials!
Yes, I shot and edited the whole thing.
