  • In this video we give a summary of our recent communications with the attorney representing Niagara Specialty Metals.
    We are sharing these as a matter of public record, to help folks better understand what's been going on. I've decided to just post these, since we didn't initiate contact, we agreed to nothing, we signed no agreement, this attorney does not represent me and I feel this whole situation is highly suspicious.
    When we know more, you'll know more. Thanks so much for stopping by.

    So, are all the knife orders in magnacut on hold indefinitely while you battle the lawyers? Hope you have your own attorney. What about the customer orders affected? BTW, nobody can contact you about their order as you do not respond anymore

      Hey there, I work every day but Tyler works handling customer communications Mon-Wed, as he lives pretty far from the shop.
      I do not have an attorney and I don't plan to get one. I'm simply presenting this information as a matter of public record.
      We are here in the shop, working 7 days a week, but since some of these things have affected and continue to affect our small business and ability to serve you, I want you to be informed.
      We are working to get things resolved and caught up as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience and support while we get this handled. 👊

    Your whole business and "issues" (how many times have you just been about to turn the corner?) are a slow moving train wreak and it's your customers who have been paying the real price (in $$$$s) since when 2014 or 15 ?

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад

      This is exactly what's left from that era. Link below. We tried everything to avoid becoming a manufacturing company but it became necessary.
      We paid to have these made, and now have to make them ourselves at a loss.
      Should we quit just because it wasn't fair? You don't quit just because things are difficult. We've learned the lessons and pressed on. ruclips.net/video/AIMSfjVWkJU/видео.htmlfeature=shared

      Hey there, with the situation we've been left with, we very much need to work our way out of this.
      Our insurance company's position is the situation is the liability of the supplier or manufacturer of the materials, so we don't have coverage. I have reached out to Niagara Specialty Metals to inquire about their insurance information, I have just not heard back.
      We need to get these material reports they say they have, to be able to move forward with something like that. This has absolutely crippled our small business but we are working our way out of it.
      We utilize preorder money to buy materials and to make the knives you ordered. We never imagined the materials company would take this position on a warranty issue, so we're left to deal with this on our own.

    I prefer your high quality standards over shoving something less reliable out the door. Every Survive! knife I have held outshines every other production knife i have ever held, and outshines quite a lot of crafted knives.
    BTW, @Surviveknives --this is a quotable quote I am saving:
    "It's really hard to maintain a high level of craftsmanship in an Amazon world. Everyone understands price, but very few seem to understand value."
    Dead on and poignant.

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +1

      This right here. It took a lot of hard lessons to create what we're doing today. It hasn't been easy in this kind of world. Everyone wants instant success, and any setback are perceived as complete failure.
      After getting into manufacturing, I can see why this country is slowly degrading and increasingly dysfunctional.
      I constantly fight the urge to let my feelings of idealism and curiosity give way to cynicism.

  • @t0nyxgq
    @t0nyxgq 7 месяцев назад +3

    Quick question: For those who ordered knives in magnacut and it has not been made because of the issue, can we have it swapped out for a different steel?

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +3

      I plan to get all of these orders fulfilled, but I am also 100% fine with you swapping an order to something currently in production in one of the other steels.
      We will continue ordering a sheet here and there, to finish out CPM orders, but then we are done. This other material is clearly superior in quality.

    What is the actual number of bad parts, not including the parts that PHT messed up? Your numbers don't seem right. $100 per knife is 150 blades. If that is 10-20%, then you only made 1000 knives last year. Seems like it should be higher. Guessing here, but you make what, 5k to 10k knives per year?
    As far as MagnaCut goes, I don't think I've read that this was an easy steel to manufacture knives with. It wasn't designed with that in mind. The performance speaks for itself. Go back and watch the DBK video on your knife. Go with the Bohler steels for ease of manufacture but they don't perform like MagnaCut. Larger knives need toughness, those steels aren't even close.
    This seems like a strange way to try to sell knives.

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад

      These messages are not about selling anything. They are a matter of public record, so that folks understand what we have been going through. You are trying to create a formula that I was not even indicating. I was talking about what was being offered for us to stop talking about magnacut, not our production numbers.
      This steel is alleged to be specifically designed for the knife industry. Manufacturability and quality standards need to be insured before a material is released to the public. The loss some other companies are having due to various issues is quite alarming.
      Any other company would do its due diligence to ensure the success of a material before a public release, not on the fly, using its customers to refine its handling formulas. Especially not without informing the public that is the case. There is a big difference between data sheet values, and a quality product. I personally believe, based on conversations with the CEO of Niagara, that this had to work, whether it did or not.
      Maybe things are better now, who knows, but that does not change our experiences with these material or the experiences I'm realizing so many other folks have had or are having.
      As I stated in my counter offer video to Niagara, I believe these entire batches of material are substandard, and should have been replaced. The voids we are seeing are just what we can find at those depths and intersections we finish parts at. As you can see in other videos, as we ground further into some parts, there continued to be voids.
      We have other samples going out now, to look inside the parts with an SEM and other inspection methods. If the company is denying us a warranty, I find it very strange that they will not provide the evidence of why, or return our samples for independent evaluation. That was the purpose of this video.

      This was a response video to the attorney's first offer. There was no way I was going to sign an NDA contract, essentially eliminating my ability to talk about these issues, for $15k. That's insane. (Internal Memo) Counter Offer To NSM

    Hi Guy!
    Thank you for sharing and being fully transparent.
    I think, your knives provide an exeptional value and worth waiting for. I hope the situation with the CPM materials resolves soon and they make it right by you.
    Looking forward to see a tabletop review of EDC-5. Will place an order when they become available in Elmax.

    Its a bummer this is ongoing as I have a 5.1 and 5.3 in magnacut on order that are obviously being delayed by this. I hope Dr. Larrin Thomas brings his future products and maybe even Magnacut II to a company like Uddeholm to make for the industry, they seem to have much better QC than crucible. But through all this you really have shined a light on the knife industry as a whole where for instance a company like busse offers different finishes and its likely because they get a lot of product with similar issues and just cover it up with a coating. Anyone who has looked at a person who has removed the coating shows a pretty rough finish which isn't wholly unexpected but now thinking of voids would be interesting to see how much of a problem that is with INFI, which is likely just a rebranded steel with their custom heat treat process...likely made by crucible...if anyone knows better please correct me, this isn't a bash on busse, I'm just more familiar with their products as I own several and have been perfectly happy with them (other than their high prices ;)). Which again is why I'd rather support a company like Survive giving much better finished blades for much less money. Crucible should learn that coverups and such don't lead anywhere good, they should accept their failings, make Guy whole and move on... prolonging this can't be good for their business as this is spreading further and further. I haven't seen a single negative review of Survive's knives so any criticism is delivery time, not the ultimate product. I mean jeesh, Chris Reeves is like 6 years if you order direct and owning them too, I'd say survive is easily on par with them quality wise...at much better pricing.

    Guy,
    I have been waiting for a 5.1 Magnacut for almost 2 years now. I’m glad that you were finally able to let us know what’s going on.
    That said, I preordered a Spyderco Native 5 in Magnacut from Knifecenter around the same time as I ordered your 5.1. That order got cancelled, and I was never told why...but now it makes sense.
    Just be extremely careful if you’re “fighting” these guys without an attorney. And I wouldn’t recommend letting them examine your shop processes without some type of professional independent 3rd party present. They’re obviously just looking for any way to blame the issues on you.
    That said, do you have any time frame of when the 5.1s will be completed? Are you currently shipping them when you get “good” examples, or are you holding everything back?

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +2

      Hey there, good morning. I live under a rock, so thank you for that information. I might reach out to Spyderco to inquire more.
      I'm not really trying to fight this company, more just be transparent about what we are seeing with these materials here in the shop, and the company's response to the situation in general. I find it very strange that if they are denying a warranty claim on these materials, that they won't share the supporting documentation on why or return our samples for independent evaluation.
      They can honestly look at our shop procedures as hard as they want. I've toured other shops, we aren't doing anything wrong here, and I would dare them to prove otherwise. Again, if they could, there would be evidence they could provide, that could be independently verified.
      We've had experts in here, I know we are bulletproof. After speaking with several metallurgists, some who are extremely familiar with Crucible's practices, I am 99%+ sure of what is happening. We just need the reports they claim to have, the samples Niagara used to come to those determinations, along with independent labs and reports.
      We are having our own studies done now, to get to the bottom of this. The results will be interpreted by a panel of experts. I understand the concepts, but this is not my field of study, so this will be a community effort involving several industry experts.
      The stakes are high here, so I need to get this right. We will be posting the information, not for the purposes of litigation, but rather public information and awareness.

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +2

      Sorry, to your other question. GSO-5.1s are moving through grinding and surface finishing right now. We have lots of handles machined, so assembly and shipping will begin shortly.
      With so many parts falling short of quality expectation, that is affecting our blade counts overall. We will continue ordering more material to get these wrapped up, but then we are done with these CPM materials.
      Unless somebody can clearly demonstrate what has been going on, and that the situation has been resolved, I just don't have a high level of confidence in these steels.

      I am really hoping that being transparent about this gets is our parts back for an an independent evaluation. Their attorney said they have reports, I don't know why they won't show them to us or return our parts. If something is going on with the material, just make it right.
