20:55 thank you. Just received 4 fountain pens - Parker 51, Moore and two more Parker fp. 1930’s or 40’s time frame. Your videos help me understand the process of cleaning these. Thank you.
After watching this video and winning some 51 aerometric and vacumatic parts on eBay I was able to repair and restore my old 1947 Blue Diamond Vac Parker 51. It works beautifully. Thanks so much for your videos.
One of the many reasons I like the videos are your tools. They aren't the expansive ones most people seem to try and sell in other videos, but things found around or easy to make
mgmmaze Absolutely, i have no engineering background i simply like to make things. Most of my tools are home made. A lot of people may only have one pen they would like to service so it would be pointless buying lots of expensive tools.
This is amazingly helpful and demystified this pen for me. My mother gave me two pens of hers, which have been sitting in her drawer since the 1950s. The Esterbrook J was a snap to figure out, but I didn't know where to start with the Parker 51. After soaking the Parker in water for a week, using warm water on the barrel, and applying slight pressure, I got the pump assembly to come off. I would have never pulled apart the collector without your video... nor would I have figured out how to attach the sac pump. As a beginner, it seems to me to be a weird design and not at all intuitive! Again, thank you! I can't wait to get it working again.
Hey Stef, thank you so much for your videos. I started collecting FPs only recently & love to fix things myself. This evening, thanks to you I was able to restore a Parker 51 Vacumatic that I bought in a 2nd hand market here in Seville, it was only €1 & it is my prize possession. Keep on rockin' in the free world Stef. Cheers Glenn.
This video will never get old . It's as true today as it was then☺️ thank you sir for the extreme detail!! Things were made really well back in those days. I collect pens and just realized 💡 I have this exact pen Different color though. And until I get into it , it seems I won't the exact date of it it will be a daunting task, but I might try it? On the one I have it's in working order. Infact I till now thought it to be one of my ugliest pens☺️ boy was I wrong... you got me thinking all the work that went into crafting such a pen...Excellent video my friend 👍
This video has been great. I was given a blue diamond vacumatic and by following the video (and ordering a few parts from Pendragons) I now have a wonderfully working pen. Thanks a lot.
Awesome video. I just picked up a 1948 vacumatic 51 demi. I was really curious how the mechanism works. This video was very helpful. Thanks for such a great video.
I have found but not confirmed the thread pitch of the nut shown at 6:24 is a 5/16"-32 to remove the vacumatic pump. This is a specialty size but can be found through online retailers or specialty fastener supply stores if you are inclined to try and make your own.
Great video. Now I know how my Gandpa's vacumatic pen is built. Now I also have an idea about what is wrong with it and I will send it for repair. Wish you were in NY, I would send it to you!
Another wonderful video, Stef! I was able to dismantle a P51 Vacumatic I picked up by following your video. Still need that nut to remove the back, but at least I know what to do. This one's got a bad diaphragm.
Hi Penkino1 thks for the reply, yes pen is vacumatic the nib was splayed out I have straitened the tines out but on close inspection it looks like one on the little pads has been damaged, again many thks for video a picture is worth a thousand words. Regards Tony
So i gather the piston is actually out of the end of the barrel but stuck in the blind cap ? If that is the case then the same applies, soak or gentle heat.It may not work straight away so be patient and repeat.Use section pliers to try and loosen it.Gently does it...Good luck.
Thanks for watching...I am not sure of the nut size but i know i found the size on line but i cant remember were.On the vacumatic pens the breather tube is about that size so that is normal. They are normally made of metal or if it is the plastic material then most times they are fine to reuse.Ultrasonic cleaner if you know some one that has one,if not then soak in water with a little ammonia added.I hope this help....Good luck. PS What are you looking to source ?
Thanks for sharing! I tired to remove a standard size Parker Vacumatic filler unit with a pair of ordinary pliers wrapped by several layers of rubber gloves. However, the rubber layers were torn apart and some marks were left on the threads. Now the blind cap screws on and off, but with a bit of resistance. I wounder whether it's still possible to remove the unit with the "removal screw" shown in this video (and whether you sell these individual screws), since its threads are partly messed up.
hi, how do you take the gem out of the lid of the parker 51, is it ok to use warm-hot water to take the hood off and is it completely necessary to use adhesive when you put the hood back on? thanks ps great vid, really helped
The breather tubes were made of sterling silver and have a tendency to corrode and break. You may see a piece is still in the bottom of the feed, that needs to be removed before a new one is fitted.(That's another video i will do to try and show you).New breather tubes are available to buy online. The nib can be ground and polished but it is a little difficult and i would not recommend you do it yourself. If you do not like your nib i would be quite happy to exchange it for another nib....
Do you mean the blind cap will not unscrew off ? If so try using gentle heat with a hairdryer or immersing the barrel end in hot water.Repeat if necessary and patience.Hope that helps.
Brilliant, Vacuumatics are a real pain to service. Old George and Kenneth Parker always had a "better idea". If they were alive today, I would send them a nasty gram.
Loved your clear presentation of how to service a Parker 51 Vacumatic Fountain Pen. I have one that needs to have the sac replaced. I would love you to do the work and will be in touch.
Yes the weather here is good in the fall .I'll give you an up-date if I can get this to work right ...www.bing.com/search?q=tucson+weather&form=EDGNTC&qs=LC&cvid=e35542c7b4c44da08c745ae5c67a735d&pq=tucson+we&PC=DCTE
Nice video, thanks for unlocking some of the mysteries "under the hood", so to speak. Years ago I invested in special tools to remove the vacumatic filler mechanisms from the barrel. The standard size works (obviously) with standard, as well as debutante sizes. There is a oversize model for the big Vacs. The design is identical to Parker's original tools, and they make a miserable job less miserable. I've fixed a lot of Vacumatics with these tools and they are much easier to use than most of the alternatives available. Just wondering if you've used them, and your opinions of them if you have?
Im not quite sure to what tools you are referring to as there are a number available. Buying these special tools can become very expensive. I use the simple brass C rings which work for me. Thank you for your comments. .
Your on the right road with soaking the filler unit. Try using some lighter fluid to release it and some gentle heat (hair dryer). Most of all use PATIENCE.
Thank you for this video- i bought one of the old blue cedar finishes at the DC pen show but it is missing the sac, the pump is chipped where that ball sets and the breather tube is def not clear. I had no idea what was wrong with it until i saw this.
If the ball cup is chipped then you may find the new sac will not sit in the cup as it should, so may need to be replaced. The breather tube just needs soaking and cleaned. Good luck.
oh, and two more things...when i took mine apart, the feeder tube was all in bits and had holes in it, do you know where i can get hold of a new one, or if i can use anything as a substitute, also, my nib writes very thick, where can i get a new one, or can i change the thickness myself? thanks
Hi...Yes you can use hot water to take the hood off,and to take the jewel out of the cap is a bit long winded to explain. So i have made you a video on how to remove the jewel and how i remove the hood.So keep watching......Thanks for viewing....
Hello Tim..Ive never considered removing the Sheaffer Vac seal unit with the Parker Vac split ring, interesting. Unfortunately i do not have any Sheaffer Vacs at the moment so i cant tell you the thread size, sorry. Maybe Mr Oldfield at Penpractice could advise you...Good luck.
Great video Stef! I'm gonna try to service my 47' P51 vacumatic. I have not a ultrasonic bath. After remove the hood, collector filler and nib, would you please give me a step-by-step indication and recommendations to remove the vacumatic pump? For example: should I soak the pump by inside the barrel? should I apply hot water or dry hot air? I have a C-ring. Best regards and thanks in advance, Jose Luis
Hi Jose. Thanks for watching. I have done numerous "How To" videos on Parker pens. Sorry you will need to stroll through them and watch them. Good luck with your pen.
Hi Thank you your video is great and very helpfull I've now stripped my fathers old 51 down and need a new nib and ink sac the old nib is marked 14 kt Parker England 58 could you suggest anyone who could supply these items Thanks again Tony
Personally i use my hair dryer. There is no specific time but i constantly check the heat with my lip. If in doubt use it for a short period and if needed repeat the process BUT have patience. Good luck.
Thanks tm glad they are informative. Most of my tools are home made, however they do not always work. Pen repair tools can be purchased on line from established repair people. Good luck.
He does not say so.. but when he squeezing the barrel with the ruuuuber tipped pliers he is pinching the barrel on the threads so it won't budge, then you can turn the feed section off.. My ancestors are from ancient Cholderton, Wiltshire 1550's Rev. De Nicholas Noyes
Hi Steff, just love your videos and explanations. I have a Parker 51 similar to the one you showed - great video. However, I am perplexed as to what size vacumatic diaphragm I would need to fitr my 51 (it had the year 1946 on the base of the nib after I took it out of the feeder). Also where can I purchase such a diaphram from once I know the size, as there isn't anywhere in my State of Victoria, Australia who has even heard of such things. Regards Glen.
Hi Glen, thank you for watching and for your comments. You can purchase the diaphram here and they will also help you with the correct one www.vintagepensacsandparts.com/product.php/5/2/ink_sacs_for_parker_vacumatic please mention me. Good luck
Steph, brilliant as usual! Using a little ingenuity to make your own filler removal wrench with a cut brass screw....did you buy it threaded? Something from plumbing aisle at hardware shop? Been thinking to do a Vacumatic after finishing a few Snorkels....nice video :)
As always, very helpful. Now I have more of a clue of what goes on inside my old Parker Vacumatic. By the way, the nib on my pen can be moved sideways when writing with the pen, does this mean the feed is worn or that the nib doesn't belong to the pen? It happens to be a semi flex gold nib.
Glad it was of help. It sound that something is not right with your pen as the nib should not move. Difficult to comment without actually seeing the pen. Thanks.
When you were soaking the pen's pump area to loosen the solidified pump gunk did you just leave the pen upside down in a small glass of water or did you completely submerge the pen? i ask because the pump on my Vacumatic I just received seems to be solidified as well.
That's no problem,if you do not feel confident enough then find a repair person who is close to you and send it to them.Unfortunately i am across the pond otherwise i would have had a look at it for you...Good luck. PS How did you remove the pump in the fist place ....
Stef - can you give a little more information on the brass screw you're using to remove the pump unit off he back? Where might I find one? Is it available at a hardware store and if so what is the specific size?
Hi Steff. Thanks for your reply. A point. The treaded section on my plunger is not actually attached to the end piece of aluminium like yours is, should it be? If so, do I shellac it in? or isn't it necessary. Also, I had to actually dig out the old (aluminium?) pallet from the nipple recess so a new pellet/diaphragm sac can be fitted (that's when I get the right size one). Can you tell me what size the vacumatic daiphram sac was that you actually used in this particular Parker demonstration. Appreciated Glen.
Hi Glen, im not quite sure what you mean ? If you mean the aluminium cone on the pump then yes it is needed for the sac to sit on. Please see my previous reply with the link of were to buy the diaphragm for the size you will need. Thanks
That was a great instructional...Thx! I have my Dad's old Parker 51 w/ blue diamond on arrow clip & I'm trying to get it operating 100%. It writes OK, but runs out of Ink quickly. Nib pulls out just like your pen (Engraved with ~ Made in USA RU-PL 1.) . The Body of the pen has Parker USA engraved on it along w/ T.5. The pump mechanism is the same as yours'. I removed the pump assembly (it came out easily). But I believe the bladder is destroyed. Only parts of it were left. I don't think the pump is functioning properly...sigh! New bladder/diaphragm...? Any info where they can be found?
If you cannot see the diaphragm then it definitely needs replacing, check inside the barell some times the remnants are stuck inside. You can purchase a new one at www.vintagepensacsandparts.com/product.php/5/2/ink_sacs_for_parker_vacumatic Mention that i sent you. good luck with your pen.
Thank You. They have it all. I'm going to give it a go. I like your hands-on approach to restoring pens. Not so sure about refining the nib. Although the pen seems write OK.
Dear Stef, I've watched your video. But do not think you understood my question: I want to know how to remove the pellet from a vacumatic bomb ever used. What tool to use? How should this operation be done? That you did not show in your video. Very grateful, Paulo Correa
Paulo Corrêa Hi Paulo...Your original question was " My question is: how would be the proper way to remove the old pellet from the vacumatic pump? " That is what i have tried to show in the video. Sorry if i have not shown that in the video then i do not understand what you are asking.
Again please show how you remove the parts, not when it's already done. Better show than explain. That said, it a great and useful video. I now know I will not even try this one!!
Hi, Stef! Thanks for your highly informative videos. I have two Parkers 21 aerometrics to change sacs. Are they the same as the ones on the Parker 51s? Is the pocedure the same? TIA, looking forward to see more good stuff. Greetings from Spain
Hi Alfredo, thanks for watching. Yes the Parker 21s are very similar however more care is needed as they are quite fragile and can crack easily. Good luck.
Im sure there maybe, however i use the pure unscented talc. I have a small tub which has lasted many years and there is plenty for many years to come. Thanks
The pen needs to be correctly serviced and cleaned. If the ink flow still needs adjusting then you will need to adjust the feed and tines. Good luck with it.
I think it would take to long to do. My collection is always rotating as i will sell to buy others. As far as favorites i have lots of favorites for different reasons. By showing them individually viewers can see them in more detail...
20:55 thank you. Just received 4 fountain pens - Parker 51, Moore and two more Parker fp. 1930’s or 40’s time frame. Your videos help me understand the process of cleaning these. Thank you.

Fantastic instructional video. Thank you! It is quite a job to fix one of these but it looks well worth the work.
Thanks for watching. They are not the easiest to restore but great pens once done.
Thank you so so much for this. I have fully taken appart and cleaned my parker 51 vacumatic and am now waiting on a sac. :)
Im glad it was useful to you Conrad, well done.

i love fountain pens, ive had a hard time finding such thorough videos until now, keep it up!
A very informative video. Have my late dad's Parker 51 Vacumatic and other pens and hoping to bring them back into service. Thanks
Im glad it was informative and i hope it helps with your pens. Be careful and have some patience as you may damage your pens. Good luck.
I hope it encourages more younger collectors, please share it with other...Good luck.
Thank you guy! I've repaired my old 51 thanks to you!
Thank you for the video; I just restored mine, writes great.
Glad it helped Joel, so well done. Enjoy the pen.

Stef this has been a HUGE HELP !! Thanks for taking the time !
A Red Falcon That is why they are made, to help. So im glad it has been useful.
Brilliant, Vacuumatics are a real pain to service. Old George and Kenneth Parker always had a "better idea". If they were alive today, I would send them a nasty gram.
Yes i agree they can be a bit fiddly, but lovely pens once serviced. Thanks
Loved your clear presentation of how to service a Parker 51 Vacumatic Fountain Pen. I have one that needs to have the sac replaced. I would love you to do the work and will be in touch.
Glad you enjoyed it, i hope it was helpful. Thanks for watching.
Wonderful job, Stefan! You're a master!
Thanks, glad you liked it.
Nice job Steph thank you , I'm brand new and will be looking forward to seeing all your videos . Just to let you know I'm in Tucson Arizona .
Thanks, im sure there are enough videos to keep you occupied. I hope the weather is a little better in Arizona than lil ol England.

Nicely done! Thank you for this informative video.
I hope it was helpful, thanks for watching.
Dear Stef, I like very much your videos. My question is: how would be the proper way to remove the old pellet from the vacumatic pump? Please detail.
Paulo Corrêa Hi Paulo...Video done for you, good luck with your pen.
Your on the right road with soaking the filler unit. Try using some lighter fluid to release it and some gentle heat (hair dryer). Most of all use PATIENCE.

Very good explication , thanks from Chile
Thank you for watching, give my regards to Chile.
Era o que procura muito obgd sou do Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thanks for watching from Brasil. 👍
I have a question. I had a bad sac and I see a little white balk inside of the black cup. Does that need to come out?
Yes the little ball has to come out (carefully) and you will find a new ball inside the new diaphragm. Good luck
Many thanks, HAS SERVED ME A LOT, GRATEFUL
Im glad it was useful to you Eduardo. Thanks
Hi...Yes you can use hot water to take the hood off,and to take the jewel out of the cap is a bit long winded to explain. So i have made you a video on how to remove the jewel and how i remove the hood.So keep watching......Thanks for viewing....
What is the best method of applying heat? Heat gun? I assume you should always try to stay away from an open flame.
I have used my trusty hair dryer for many years. NO open flames. Thanks
Im so glad they helped you, well done with your pen. Enjoy it.

Hi Thank you your video is great and very helpfull I've now stripped my fathers old 51 down and need a new nib and ink sac the old nib is marked 14 kt Parker England 58 could you suggest anyone who could supply these items
Thanks again Tony
Seen your video, Seen the same on ebay, Just got it in.. Where do you get the diaphragm sac from ? Can you help ?
Who sells these ?
Hello, what could i use to remove the vacuum pump without a wrench?
I would not recommend you try without the wrench in case you break the pump. Or send it to a pen restorer to have it done correctly. Good luck.
Glad you like it,but apart from you i do not seem to be able to get a response...So i will see ? Thanks for watching.
When you say apply heat to remove the filler unit, do you mean hot water, or a hair dryer? If it's a hair dryer, how long would you say to do it for?
Personally i use my hair dryer. There is no specific time but i constantly check the heat with my lip. If in doubt use it for a short period and if needed repeat the process BUT have patience. Good luck.
Stef, love your most informative videos. How were you able to remove the inner cap and clutch? what tools are you using for such and operation? Thanks
Thanks tm glad they are informative. Most of my tools are home made, however they do not always work. Pen repair tools can be purchased on line from established repair people. Good luck.
Wonderful video...you should be sainted, knighted or both...do you have a video on fixing cap dents?
Glad you liked it. Saint Stef, sounds good. Iv made so many im not to sure you may have to look through the videos. Many thanks.
Great video. What do you use to remove old ink?
Thank you. Depends were from ? I use a ultrasonic cleaner to clean my parts. And it depends what the parts are and made from. Good luck

Glad it was of help. It sound that something is not right with your pen as the nib should not move. Difficult to comment without actually seeing the pen. Thanks.
Hi...No problem, its there to help .....
Thanks, im glad you enjoyed it and that it was helpful.
how often would you have to take these apart for cleaning if you were to use the same ink?
When you were soaking the pen's pump area to loosen the solidified pump gunk did you just leave the pen upside down in a small glass of water or did you completely submerge the pen? i ask because the pump on my Vacumatic I just received seems to be solidified as well.
Soaking the pump area will help to remove any "gunk". Go carefully and have patience. Good luck.
That's no problem,if you do not feel confident enough then find a repair person who is close to you and send it to them.Unfortunately i am across the pond otherwise i would have had a look at it for you...Good luck.
PS How did you remove the pump in the fist place ....
hi
very goodf video can you show how you remove the jewel and what is the diameter of the nut you use please thanks
Stef - can you give a little more information on the brass screw you're using to remove the pump unit off he back? Where might I find one? Is it available at a hardware store and if so what is the specific size?
Hi Bill ...They are made specifically for this job with the correct threads. You can buy them from Laurence www.penpractice.com/index.html
Thanks
Very informative - thank you so much!
Robert Markham Thanks, im glad you found it informative.
Hi Steph! Could you give me some instructions or so to say to make that c ring/removal screw for the pump?
Hi Gordon, why make one when you can buy one online. They are inexpensive to buy. Good luck.
@@grandmiapens oh? I’ve been looking around but the only ones available are the tools which cost quite an amount.
No you do not need lots of expensive tool, C ring here for £5.00
www.penpractice.com/page3.html
You can purchase a new one at www.vintagepensacsandparts.com/product.php/5/2/ink_sacs_for_parker_vacumatic
Mention that i sent you. good luck with your pen.
Thank You. They have it all. I'm going to give it a go. I like your hands-on approach to restoring pens. Not so sure about refining the nib. Although the pen seems write OK.
Good luck with it.
That is what i have tried to show in the video.
Sorry if i have not shown that in the video then i do not understand what you are asking.
OK, Stef. Still in doubt, but ... thanks!
Paulo Corrêa No problem, thanks.
Hi there! Do you still service pens? I have a Parker 51 with a damaged nib
Any inquiries email me. Cheers
Hey well done, im glad it was of use to you. Now enjoy your pen...
Again please show how you remove the parts, not when it's already done. Better show than explain. That said, it a great and useful video. I now know I will not even try this one!!
I have made lots of "How to" videos, a lot of pens the procedure is the same. Thanks
wow! thankyou soooo much, thats very kind of you. i will look out for it
Where can I find the brass screw like you had to remove the pump?
Good luck.
Hi! Mine started to leak from vac pump What it could be? Maybe a puncture on the rubber sac?
Yes it sounds like it needs a new diaphragm and service. Thanks and stay safe.
grate job, thanks
Thanks for watching!
Hi..You can buy them from chillipea on ebay. Please mention that i recomended them. Good luck with your pen.
Hi...Im glad you like it.......
My piston is stuck in the blind cap. How do I get it out?
Hi, is absolutely necessary use shellak to seal the bomb?
If you mean the hood Hugo then i always seal with shellac. Thanks and stay safe.
Hi...Did you buy it from me, as i dont recall the name ? Either way enjoy your pen....
Can I ask if there is an alternative to talc powder?
Im sure there maybe, however i use the pure unscented talc. I have a small tub which has lasted many years and there is plenty for many years to come. Thanks
Aligning the nib with the hood is by 'rule of thumb' then! Ha-Ha! Good demonstration
Ha ha, yes you could say that Michael. Cheers
Hello, how to adjust the ink flow on the p51 vacumatic?
The pen needs to be correctly serviced and cleaned. If the ink flow still needs adjusting then you will need to adjust the feed and tines. Good luck with it.
keep doing these awesome vids.
Im not sure what you mean, there is no glass ?
I think it would take to long to do. My collection is always rotating as i will sell to buy others. As far as favorites i have lots of favorites for different reasons. By showing them individually viewers can see them in more detail...
2020: next stop acquiring one of my own.
Great idea Abraham, they are very nice pens to use. Thanks
How do you revove the jewel. You show how to reinstall it but not how to remove it.
I think i made a video showing how to remove the jewel, go take a look.Cheers
I went to your site, but there wasn't any way that I saw to contact you and arrange a repair. Where do you do your work?
Why not send me a PM or email.
I received your reply, but it just referred me back to this RUclips video that gives no way to email you.
