  • Pintado Canyon, a Spanish word meaning "painted canyon", is a listed archaeological site of Native American Art in Rio Blanco County, Colorado.
The rock walls of the canyon have served as a massive canvas for thousands of years, preserving the history of the land and it's peoples.
Rock art is one of the oldest forms of human expression.
Anthropologists define rock art as images carved, drawn of painted onto immovable rock surfaces.
Carved images are called Petrogliphs and painted images Pictographs.
Pinto Canyon is believed to have been occupied for more than 11,000 years.
The rock art crafted between 1 AD and 1300 AD is attributed to the Fremont Indian Peoples and from 1300 to 1881 by the Ute Tribe of Native Americans.
Search for one of the most outstanding Pictographs, that of Kokpelli, the humpback flute player, according to legend brought all the seeds from another world to this world. He is also a fertility symbol.
Be aware when exploring the canyon that it is also habitat for several dangerous creatures such as rattlesnakes, black widow spiders and scorpions

And lotsa bunnies die on that road only to be cleaned up in the morning by magpies. I used to work the shallow gas wells in the canyon. Don't think that was a rattler, was it?

The head is much too narrow and the body too slim to be a rattlesnake. My guess would be a gopher snake.
