In 20 years even new skyscrapers will be torn down to create newer eyesores. In 1,000 years Roman architecture will still be wonders that inspire awe.
True
99.9% of Roman architecture has been torn down or destoryed. Most of what survives is the best of the best. To imply that there won't be a similar number of modern buildings still marveled at in 2,000 years is based on nothing but historical bias. The Romans would have marveled at the Empire State building just as they marveled at the pyramids.
@@MichaelMcmanhory-ms9mr There are entire Roman Town and or village that still have most of their architecture intact to the citizen house to public buildings, and they are all marvellous to see, with sculpted column and such, you are ignorant, if you think Roman would be impressed by building that look like some disgusting turds if we today with our degenerate notion of "arts" don't find them that impressive I don't think the Roman would beside the size of it they would certainly wonder "you can make building of this size with such ease, but why not make it pleasant to look at ?"
@@titiusvicinius7041 There's only one person demonstrating ignorance here, and that's you. Citizen homes were by definition the homes of the 1%. 30% of the Empire were slaves, half the Empire were women (who did not own property or have rights), and another large percentage would have been children. Then when you factor in that very few freemen were actually citizens (especially in conquered territory), you begin to realize that Roman citizens were the elite of the elite. The vast majority of people lived in wooden slums or in their master's housing. Nowadays even slums and housing projects in the West are made with brick or stone, with insulation lining the walls to keep you warmer than a nobleman in the year 0.
Now, with this context, compare the apartments of the top 1% in New York today to that Citizen housing in Rome, and tell me which you would rather live in, historical bias aside. The choice is clear. We are far wealthier today, have access to a greater number of building materials, have the technology to make new designs work that would not have been possible 2,000 years ago, and can import from a global supply network. The Romans would see a home made of marble and glass and view it how we view the sleek, shiny designs in a science fiction movie. We live in a world beyond their wildest dreams, yet we still act like we have somehow gone backwards from a design standpoint. The entire US Capitol city is built in the Roman style, yet I don't see you or any traditionalists drooling over it. That is because it wasn't built thousands of years ago and it does not suit your narrative. It's about age, not actual aesthetics with your ilk.
@@titiusvicinius7041I doubt they wouldn't be impressed by our technological advancements.

"But modern buildings are better because they are more efficient"
Yes, more efficient in provoking me suicidal thoughts.
It’s not just about efficiency, it’s about the concrete. Old concrete is much longer lasting than the stuff we use now, but modern concrete is easier to make and cheaper. The search of profit has destroyed architectural beauty.
I believe we need to strike a balance. We need these buildings to house as many people as possible, but we also need the architectures of old so that there is some beauty, and quality in this world, and also to give a good-looking shelter for the upper middle class and the upper class who can afford it.
And our economic and political systems all over the world need to be fixed to get this balance.
Both capitalism and socialism will never create the old kind of architecture which we love and appreciate everywhere, because on one end we compromise on beauty and quality to help as many as possible, and on the other end we compromise on beauty and quality to make it as profitable as possible.
And both these extremes occur because the greedy and corrupt politicians work for themselves and not for the nation.
0:25 if anyone wonders, this one is Hadrian's Gate, located in Antalya, Turkey. Amazing place that is!!! And the atmosphere around the old town is immaculate, feels definitely like old times...

@@h3nry_t122 Bro, peasants used to do pilgrimages to, see those and most towns had at least one church. Let's cut the bullshit and say it like it is: our modern world is fugly.
@@h3nry_t122 Old houses are fairly well built as compared to modern houses. The same principles they used to build their houses are still used to this day, in several aspects older homes are actually better built and made from stronger material than the normal modern home. Some houses even use the same material like stone that are used in building the massive churches, fortresses and castles that stood the test of time. That's why we can see some really old houses still standing even if so many years pass and the modern home is lucky if it survives for 1 or 2 decades before it's rebuilt. Back then things were built to last, now they were built to be replaced considering modern advancement makes it easier to do. Architecture back then was also considered a sacred practice. Craftsmen and workers spend their lives mastering the thing they learned from their parents or their teacher. Master builders make master works.
On the topic of peasants never seeing it or coming even close. Remember these are really tall and massive cathedrals that can be seen even at the cities edges. Houses mostly don't go taller than 2 stories so anybody can see the campanile in the distance if they look up. The architecture in the video are also mostly churches that are intended to be used in service, so these peasants are allowed inside and mostly occupy the lower aisles and seats. The everyday peasant has seen and have been in these places. If the common man is not allowed in these structure then what was the point of building them?
People love older architecture because of the raw passion and beauty they exude. They may be built for the rich, the church or whoever but one thing is clear - these buildings were made with the pride of masters who spend their lives finding out how to make something that will still stand until the end of time.
@@h3nry_t122 folks gush over it becouse it looks pretty cool
I believe that modern architecture exists only so that there is contrast and we can enjoy historical architecture
A lot of modern architecture is here to be efficient. Except for a few bold initiatives, it is not to display power or richness, or it is reserved for very few buildings.
That wasn't architecture that was an art
I live in France and I haven’t seen many locals being really impressed by our architecture. Seriously, why'd we get rid of arches and domes? Like they're so cool wtf
Well, we still use them, but non in the same way. The reason for that is his technical use and the modern concept of curves.
We don't use stone for structural functions anymore, and arches will be less cost effective then an armored concret lintel even if you would make your house with bricks.
We still use domes but with a very different geometry, parametrically generated, in contemporary architecture.
It's my dream to somehow find a balance between classical- and contemporary elements. That's somewhat, what I am striving for - to imagine the future we just have to look at the past.

Architecture Revivalism needs to become more mainstream
Tons of structures from the eclecticistic and neoclassical period are rotting or destroyed. What needs to become mainstream is a focus on refurbishing and preserving existing buildings. Buidlings older than the 1970s shouldn't be destryoed / cities and/or privat owners should have valid and scientific reasons why to destroy them.

Humanity peaked as architects during the gothic era.
*baroque
We haven't peaked. Not yet. We're just in a slump caused by corporate greed and postmodernism.
@@theexistentialnihilist2070 yep
Не зря архитектура в Вархаммере в таком стиле. Вернее там очень многое придерживается этого стиля
@@theexistentialnihilist2070 I hope you are right.
If i was a dictator i would ban two things modern art and modern architecture
hmmm, and maybe bring so form of neoclassicism and make it the one true art form of the Reich...
and, that sounds familiar

I thought architecture as an art that will last a millenia or at least 5 centuries, But now it's just a mass produce building with a lifetime of century.
This is incredibly underrated, subscribed
This is edit is so good
Golden Gate Bridge: Built in 4 years spanning 4200 feet over water and nearly 100 years old.
Modern Bridge over some road only 175 feet: Built in 2 years and collapses in less than a year.
Bruh I bet I can find plenty of modern bridges that were build fast and are long and sturdy and plenty of old ones that did not survive to the modern day
This is one of the best edits I've seen so far
this is such an amazing edit
Would've loved to see some Art Deco architecture too, like the Empire State Building, I think that's also a very beautiful architectural style, when people were still caring about how the buildings looked and they weren't just squares with windows.
I study Architecture and if im honest, its only now in my 3rd year that i realise we need to embrace the type of order that Vitruvian/Palladian Architecture gave us. Theres so much we can take from it
How popular is that view among your fellow students / alumni ?
@londonspade5896 quite popular, I dont have interest in architecture as a career path anymore but I'd say the moment my friends understood the fundamentals of palladian architecture, it made the first stages of designing a space much easier.
I think theres a bias though, all of us had this one tutor at some point in our bachelors that absolutely sold us on palladian architecture. I'm sure theres other schools that do the same for abbasid, or persian, or gothic for example. But the way my tutor put it, palladian architecture is the backbone of any architecture thereafter in the west, so its a good place to start if you want to be a good architect. Lots of nice rules to follow, which helped me as i have adhd and need a bit of order in my thinking
@@deechonada hello, you stopped your studies?
@koanzx1 yeah i graduated the Bachelors but i didnt continue, so im considered a part 1 architectural assistant, which is the first stage of becoming a complete architect. I'm more interested in Product Design/Design Strategy/UX now
All comments about architecture aside this has some of the best editing of any of these edits I've ever seen.
This video is absolutely beautiful
this is by far one of the best little dark age edit i saw
I liked how you used the brazilian National Congress as a example of bad architecture. It remembered me of how most brazilian cities looked ~100 years ago, there were plenty of Beaux-Arts, Colonial, Art Deco and Neo-Classical buildings. Now, almost everything looks like the buildings from Brasília. Thank you, Oscar Nieymayer
Concordo plenamente
I remember back in school, teachers made me almost worship Nieymayer, 2° grade, they made me do several presentations about him (because I was always good building dioramas, and I built one from the Congress - Which may I say, was depressingly easy to do) and I grew up thinking he was a hero. But now, mainly after studying politics, I realize how much wrong I was
Old architecture gives me a nostalgic feeling, I don’t know why.
The only way to build sustainable housing is to build houses so beautiful they'll never be destroyed

The international space station, CERN, three gorges dam and plenty of other modern mega projects that are masterpieces that took the efforts of generations and unlike cathedrals actually serve a purpose: guess I’ll go fuck myself

As an architect actually I also like the modern architecture. There are still good examples. But of course the gothic and roman architecture is so close to perfect.
