Many Greek people think Ancient Greek was pronounced in exactly the same way as Modern Greek is (with β=v and αι=e), but it was in fact tremendously different (β=b and αι=ai). Nonetheless, the legacy of the Ancient tongue on the Modern one is striking, and despite the tremendous differences there is a noticeable continuity between both, just like Latin still liveth in the Romance tongues.
The Greek version is wwwwaaaayyyy better than the English film version.

I have a copy of the iliad handed down through multiple family generations. Read it. Influenced my work in more ways than I care to admit. It was what started me down the path to being a writer, though I didn't figure that out until my comp teacher told me I had talent in high school.
Fast forward 10 years later, and someone says my style, not the content, reminded them of the iliad.

Technically, they spoke a totally different dialect of Greek back then (Mycenaean). It's pretty much totally unintelligible to modern Greek speakers, who speak a simplified variant of Koine, which was the Greek of the New Testament.

You do realise many documents are in ancient Greek, and although the pronunciation is disputed, that really has no bearing on the actual language and there are many ways it can and is pronounced. E.g. Attic pronunciation is one way argued by scholars. You really are silly, aren't you? Of course historians and scholars can translate it, and many people study it. Just because it's a dead language doesn't mean nobody understands it. Nobody disputed that it was the same as modern Greek - just because it is a dead language doesn't mean it isn't studied or known. Shame on you for calling people stupid - obviously the conversations would be different - it's a different language.
Mike the best Plenty of people know ancient Greek. Classics majors, for one. Greek citizens (because they teach it in the regular school system) for another.
thevampirefrog06 We may know some stuff, but from the moment there are no natural speakers, no one really knows how to speak the language fluently. Heck, in Greece we don't even use the Erasmian pronounciation. But yes, it's easier than most people think to translate it to Ancient Greek.
Mike the best I never said that everyone in Greece knows it, just that a lot of people do (I certainly don't remember most of the languages I learned in high school). Read Zolanton's comment. It's absurd to think that no one knows the language anymore, or that a translation would take "years."

Modern Greek is the evolution of ancient Greek and that's why you speak better modern Greek if you know ancient Greek, because ancient Greek is the base of the modern Greek language. Also there isn't only one form of modern Greek just like the ancient times there are many dialects such as Cypriot, Pontic, Cretan Tsakonian and many others. In those dialects you will find many similarities with ancient Greek, such as same words, same characteristics, same ending/suffix to many verbs etc . The Tsakonian dialect for instance clearly derives from the ancient Greek Doric dialect. As time passes, things changes so you can't expect a language to stay the same..it will evolve just like people....and It's certainly NOT ''the closest surviving language'' It' s the SAME language. I mean you could say that Italian is the closest surviving language to Latin or Spanish or the other latin languages

It’s quiet magical. I can’t tell any word apart, but I can hear the very familiar pronunciation. I went to school for Theater, a few times they’d invite native Greeks to read Greek classics. When I hear this song as if it was narrated as a classic, I almost tear up. It’s really amazing

I won't say it's amongst the best of the Greek dubs (translation wise), but I also won't say I'm not enjoying the excellent singing and harmony!
this is the best version for many reasons, one of them being how the singer’s voice suits meg so perfectly! love from your neighbors next door, turkey :)
Disney should make a movie about Turkish History. Personally, I would find it very interesting if I learned about your country's past!

Greek Muses definitely better than English Muses! Their harmonies were so much cooler and blended with what Meg was singing so much better- and if they were the same harmonies, I guess their voices just sound cooler.

Le gasp! Full Metal Alchemist sounds much better in English, but I do think that the Japanese and english voices are pretty close in tone. I prefer DBZ in english over japanese because, not trying to be rude, but Goku sounds better as a 34 year old man than an 80 year old woman. Just, saiyan.

When I was little and listened to this I just liked it because it had a good harmony. I'm telling ya, after you get in a relationship you truly feel the song and appreciate it much more

I love both the English and Greek version. But in my opinion: I’m loving this version so damn much!!!!! It’s so fucking awesome and very catchy. Also, I’ve replayed this like 4Times. So y’all know this version is definitely my fav.
It's good to see characters from a story that takes place in Greece actually speaking Greek, and thanks for posting the lyrics and translations for those of us who don't speak this wonderful language.
