23:30 those beautiful ladies are my mum and my nan!
I first watched this show on TV probably in 2014 on a drizzly cold Australia Day while living in Devon, England, just out of interest because it was my city back home and because Tony Robinson is awesome. I had no idea my mum and nan had been incorporated into Tony's show - I had the shock of my life when I saw them! I was crying and gasping!
We're definitely not a posh family. I found out Mum had been given a gift voucher for "high tea" for her birthday I think, so that was why they were dining so fancy that day.
As Mum is a vegan I wonder if they'd catered specially and made the lamington Tony acquisitioned without dairy or eggs, too.

Well Tony's got a pretty fair drive to find those waves.

I always remember the old man playing the saxophone @20:20. He has been playing his sax in the queen street mall for years now, since i was a kid, he is actually blind, and he used to have a big golden Labrador seeing eye dog that would to sit at his feet all day as he played. He was a big old dog. My brothers an I would beg our mum for money to put in his sax case so we could pat the dog (even though you're not supposed to pat guide dogs). One day i saw him in the mall without his dog and i knew the dog had died. I never saw with another dog again, but he is still there every day playing that sax. Still makes me a little sad.

Unfortunately he’s passed away, a few years ago I think

His name was Graham Pampling and he played in the mall from 1998 to 2018. He died in 2019 at the age of 80 or 81. I think he moved to a retirement home after he'd spent some time in hospital.

This was shot circa 2012 (per the Mary Poppins advertising, absence of River Walk & HSW), so I am surprised it was only uploaded in 2019. Brisbane has come a long way since then, the skyline particularly has changed significantly, with many new high rise towers having been built. The city really has come of age, and has a distinct cosmopolitan flavour, with the shopping, dining & nightlife scenes comparable to major international cities.

Also our valiant defense built for fear about the Russians at Fort Lytton would have been worth a visit. I guess it was a bit too much of a walk.

I was going to say it must have been filmed quite a while ago. 1 William Street government building isn't even started construction yet!

17:24 - I found Pvt Scott's (SX1150) file online at the National Archives. He was one of the first to enlist, but had a problem with discipline - AWOL several times! But he was kept on, was wounded in May 1941 and returned to Australia in March 1942, serving in New Guinea and Borneo and eventually rising to the rank of Sgt.

Love this series! Little bit of trivia, Terry O’Gorman, Civil Libertarian 6:18 talks about political ‘forked tongues’ .. while I don’t disagree with him, it could be pointed out that Mr O’Gorman could, arguably, be responsible for the most serious criminals, under trial for some of the worst crimes in Qld history, having been acquitted or beating their charges despite their blatant guilt… he’s one of the very best criminal defence lawyers that Qld has to offer .. there’s not many high ranking organised criminal enterprises in Brisbane, that don’t know Terry on a first name basis. Fact! 😅

Back when the police were corrupt and gambling was illegal, my mum was stopped by police as they had the road closed to allow a large roulette table to be craned into the upper level of a fortitude valley club.
She also used to work behind a bar in the gabba when she was 15 and the guards from Boggo Rd had some stories that stuck with her about metal pipes and barbwire.

I love Tony Robinson but he missed the most interesting story about Brisbane - the amazing story about how three convicts 'discovered' it. Its an absolutely amazing story missed. The irony being that one of the three, Thomas Pamphlett, was later charged and sent as a prisoner to the place he 'discovered'. Other than the missed opportunity a great doc from Tony!
