When you press the test on the ungrounded outlet it will raise the ground contact to 230 V: As it sees the ground and the live as same and the neutral different it will show reversed polarity. Same happens when it is reversed but now line and ground are zero and neutral 230 V. It only sees differences in voltages, not what they actually mean. A non-contact voltage tester can tell if there actually is voltage on something.
If the neutral and earth are reversed it will trip the RCD immediately when you use the socket so with RCDs that is not an issue. When there is no earth there is no reference to tell which is neutral. The lights are simply wired between the wires so without earth only the light between line and neutral will lit.
Also the RCD test can help to identify which fuse goes to a particular socket, for example in my house there are about 15 fuses. I do have a diagram showing which fuse is for what, but in case i lost that (or didn't have it in the first place) it could help me check which fuse is triggered. Of course, if the main fuse triggers before the fuses for a particular line then it won't help.
But RCD test is supposed to trip the FI/RCD, and not the fuse. Thus the name - RCD test. So it should always trip the RCD and NOT the actual fuse connected to that particular socket that you're testing.

Just bought one...I can't believe there is no audio indicator !
Hmm, never thought about that 🤔

Thanks for the clarification 👍🏻

Great info!

Good point 👍🏻

True. This would only work if all fuses have integrated RCD.
@@UltimateDIY Yep, and that is almost impossible to expect :)
True. I only have the main fuse of the house with integrated RCD and the fuses from the bathrooms. It would be quite expensive to have all of them.
