- Highly regarded by players and critics alike XCOM 2 improved upon Firaxis' XCOM: Enemy Unknown in many ways. But is it still top of the turn-based tactics genre or is it starting to show it's age?

Love xcom it's a desert island game no doubt. Been playing it for 7 years and can still spend an entire weekend playing it like it's brand new... I still want a new one though.
Do you still play and do you play on PS4?
@Mic 86 I started playing on Xbox one. I play on the switch now.
It doesn't run great on the switch but it's still xcom on the go so I dig it.
Oh ok I got the collection on PS4 and thought I’d try the multiplayer get the play a multiplayer game trophy but online is dead 😕
What difficulty do you play it on? I've put like 200 hours into it over the years but the higher difficulties are just unfair imo. Maybe I'm just bad :P
Same as me my friend my go to game
I play at least once a year. The replayability is off the scale.
I also tried Phoenix Point last year and had low expectations - i loved that too.
Fingers crossed for Xcom 3
Totally agree. The mods really add to the replayability factor.
I must say for me is the Xcom: Enemy Uknom 2012 with or without long war or Phoenix Point (and OG Xcom2). I hate the progressive difficulty scaling.
I'm concerned for Xcom 3 after the abysmal Chimera Squad. perhaps they got it out of their system? one can hope
Phoenix Point missed it with me because I felt I had NO connection to my soldiers. I had limited ability to affect them in the long run. Wasteland 3 was much better in that regard.
I would agree with preferring Enemy Within setting. I liked it because it reminded me of the old tv show UFO. As much as I like xcom 2( around 450 hours) I have still logged more than double the hours on Enemy Within.
Glad to still see this Game is being played in 2023 & thanks for reviewing! I had a play through it in 2022 and still thoroughly enjoy playing the game like i've played it for the first time. The 2am stresses & turn reloads, the unbearable upset when you think character is going to see through to the last mission but gets killed way before, the clench of a fist when you've kiled the first chosen. This game will always have a special place in my heart; next door to Dues Ex (2003) & the original Dungeon Keeper
Gears tactics is very good as well if anyone’s looking for solid turn based game. Not as deep as xcom but the combat is amazing.
hello out of xcom2, gears tactics and phoenix point which is most noob friendly to enjoy? series x.thanks
@@ellomate.. xcom 2 is notoriously difficult but in a fun way. I can’t speak on Phoenix point I barely played it. Xcom 2 is king but gears tactics is also very good. Just play on middle difficulty you’ll be alright.
Xcom 2 War of the Chosen is my favorite game of all time. I'm playing it now and ill play it forever. Also, all the new voices are from Star Trek the Next Generation. Yar, Troy, Worf, Riker, Q!!
That game is awesome a brought me to play turn based games, even tho i hate solo game and prefer playing with friends, the characters customization allowed me to turn a solo game into a 4 player game in which we all had ~2-3 characters each and played locally making decision together on which mission we should do or which upgrade we should research or buy, a truly awesome experience
I loved the first xcom, but never got around to getting the second due to price and other games I was binging hard. Just recently I saw it was available on the ps5 store end of the year sale with an insane price reduction price down to just 9.99 with expansion and some dlc included.
As of posting this I am waiting for it to download/install, but wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this review. Your tone, passion for the game while still mentioning gripes, and references to other favorite games of mine has made me all the more excited to play this! Easiest new subscription to a channel for me and looking forward to diving into more of your content! Cheers!
I enjoy your videos. I'm marathon listening to them this morning while doing some chores 😎
Good to hear - I do that too with podcasts!
The collections are on Steam at a 90% discount right now.
I been playing this since I got it in 2017 and is the only game I come back to.
I'd be totally happy if Xcom 3 were just a remaster of Enemy Unknown with the mechanics of XCOM 2.
Needed this review. I played 2 tho didn’t even try 1. With the Steam sale I bought both for my Steam Deck. Definitely didn’t beat it. It’d do damn hard and unfair tho I figured that’s how it’s suppose to be. Looking forward to playing the enemy within now thanks to this review.
Not to mention the complete modding support from Fiiraxis and the brilliant mods that are available and many still updated. Once you play the big overhall mods like LWOTC then you never go back to vanilla. Fantastic game that ranks among the very best for replayability.
Did they fix the launcher yet, or am I still going to have to use the custom mod launcher. Still pissed about that
AML is your best option@@mattwells5347
My most played game, currently attempting LWOTC
the awesome music and chills people in the transport after flawless mission is a remarkable
Your timing is crazy, I just took a break from SWG Legends to obsess over Xcom 2 last month. Only about 100 hours but I'll catch up to ya
What's the best bit about the game for you?
@Napyet You know that sharpshooter you love because you named him after your best friend or the ranger you spent hours customizing? Yeah, when they die, they're dead. It increases the pressure but makes your victories that much more rewarding. You fall in love with those characters, you feel real loss when they die and true joy/relief when you successfully evac them. I don't even like strategy games but Xcom 2 was something so special that it didn't matter. It went straight into my top ten of all time before the credits rolled.
It's so good in that way. And truly some twisted mechanics in that respect too - how that same dead ranger can then be re-animated and can kill their best friend! Cheers for this insight
I've been playing it on my phone lately since my kids have taken over my computer, and the Feral Interactive port is pretty darn good. No mods obviously, and I highly recommend NOT playing Iron Man since misclicks are easy to make, but it's a really solid port. The game play still holds up really well in 2023.
The $20 price tag might put some people off but considering how much "free to play" games end up costing it's an absolute bargain.
The mobile port does have a couple things that the pc version has to mod for one of them is the evac all option but the majority are quality of life improvements
I can’t really imagine a tactics game coming out that I enjoy more than XCOM 2 WotC. It really does have that special sauce you mentioned.
I hope they drop XCOM 3 but I’m not holding my breath, it feels unlikely. If I had to guess, I think I’ll be playing this game for decades
Try Playing Disgaea Games, like Disgaea 5
Well, I can say the modding scene is intense and still going, with Long War of the Chosen still being in active development. But, there's plenty of other mods that change up your gameplay, soldier classes, QoL changes, reskins, additional cosmetics, etc. that you can basically customize the game to fit your liking.
One thing from the original 1994´s UFO Enemy Unknown. If you use plasma guns in city defenses aliens will shoot everyone so you are blamed. If you stick to laser rifles you can actually save a lot of people because the AI will not focus fire them. This kind of stuff is timeless and who experienced it will never forget or lose the desire to come back and do it or play it again.
Enemy unknown remake would be neat
x com 2 is pretty good and with mods is actually insane. I just got started with this massive mod called "long war of the chosen" and the game feels almost unrecognizable and it is so so good
Been playing it for the first time and i had this ranger that i was starting to level up on the blademaster path. She was getting it done and was the one i was using for skulljacking. Then a stunlancer comes out of nowhere and kills her i didnt want to believe shes died so i mopped up, picked her up, and and extracted but she was indeed dead.
We love our customised troops but yes some stand out and save day more than once and they are extra special.
I am already hearing the fain call in the distance. I'll be playing before long :P
This ages like fine wine. I just played yesterday, I have am infinite WOTC campaign I purposely never finished the last mission on.
Been having fun searching out some multiplayer matches (still up at least on psn)
This video has inspired me, an XCOM vet with at least 2k hours between EW and 2, to finally do a "fair" playthrough, something I haven't done since my earliest campaigns. No save-scumming, no monstrously overpowered class mods, just good old fashioned strategy and a little bit of praying to RNGesus. Looking forward to it!
Demeo in vr is a great turn based strategy game. Main problem is the only book which offers any challenge for veteran players is Rat King. Still a 8.5/10 title, has more tactical depth than it first appears.
Thanks to boulders gate 3. I am now on my 20th campaign of XCOM 2, 10th of war of of the chosen I've been enjoying the hell out of it. Every day I play it. I learn something new
Xcom 2 is always worth to play regardless of what year it is, its timeless classic
it cant be a 'classic' if its less than 8 years old... stop being a sycophant!
@@nunyanunya4147That’s not what being a sycophant means
yep.... that taught me... go google and expand your vocabulary. then learn 'appologize'@@Ericcarlson44
@@nunyanunya4147You should probably learn how to spell “apologize” first, bud. Anyway, a sycophant is a “person who acts obsequiously toward someone important in order to gain [an] advantage”. He’s praising the game, which is a thing not an important person, and regardless, there is no material advantage one would gain from commenting on this video.
@@nunyanunya4147Also considering the fact that commercial video games have only really been around for about 50 years, and the pace at which the industry evolves and develops, a single title retaining interest and praise in the community for ~8 years is fairly impressive. I’d say there’s certainly an argument for calling it a classic.
Just started my 3rd play through starting from 1. These games never fail to entertain. Best strategy game
Hands down imo
I really love XCOM EW i played back when i was a kid and I'm still playing it now as a 24 yo.
XCOM 2 is awesome too. I don't know how they make this games so amazing
I agree with the setting. Xcom 1 had a much more unnerving setting, and I enjoyed the xfiles vibe.
The only thing i really wish you can have mode without the timer
For those who are thinking of getting this, it’s on Xbox game store for £5 at the minute
Bought It for 5 bucks 3 days ago and I am loving It. Sure there are some places in which XCOM2 shows its age, for example the graphics/animations or camera movement, but the gameplay (the part that is most important) is still absolutely excellent. Even 7 years after release XCOM is still highly competetive gameplay wise. Besidese some minor problems the only thing I Wish was in the game is that the player could move around in more open world like in Divinity. All in all my rating for 2023 is 8/10.
It's 2.99 now, thinking of grabbing it....
@@skepticfucker280 Definitely worth for that piece. It could bei 20€ still for Sure IMO.
@@ZealousIndifference nice, I'm a grab it tonight.
Cheers!
I still play XCOM 2 and I have to say about 50% of my playtime is spent testing out new mods from soldier cosmectic to new systems and battlefield options
I liked the first game and loved the second. The classes and fights are so much fun and the dlc are pretty good, too.
I have genuinely lost track of the number of campaigns I have played through. I have beaten the game every way and now I am trying to do legendary, beta strike, ironman. And it is HARD but I absolutely love it😊
I love 40K Chaos Gate, and it has a nice, slow progression, if you like
The only other 2 games I've played that grabbed me the same way as Xcom are Aliens Dark Descent, Shadow Tactics, and Red Solstice 2. All of these games have unique systems and ways of increasing tension
i think i should give it a shot. back when it got released i didnt like it. i thought xcom enemy unknown was just simply better so its sitting in my library for years.
now there is an interesting development in my taste of games over the recent years and xcom kind of would fit in there quite nicely. With every new year and every new game coming out the more bored i become kind of. And its part due to games not beeing fun anymore but just graphical showcases but something i discovered what really pisses me off is the fact most modern games dont feel like PC games anymore.
When i grew up and got into pc gaming, the BIG selling point of pc games were things like rts games, strategy games, and in general really make benefit of having a mouse as an input device with complex menus and and stuff to click on, basicly things you cannot do on a console. You could have nice looking story games and whatnot on consoles but stuff like.. xcom, diablo, warcraft 3, age of empires, gta 2, black & white. unreal tournament 2004, morrowind, gothic, X2 and so on... you were not able to have those kind of games on a console because they were basicly MADE with mouse controls in mind. i remember back in school we had those console kids raving about xbox and ps2 and how awesome those games look now and having those analogue sticks and ...
YOU really had to be a nerd to stick out of the croud there, be like: ''nah i just prefer this crappy looking topdown game where i can click through 50 different menus with my mouse''
for real, we were probably looked upon as the biggest weirdo nerds of the school because we used pc's and went on lan partys on weekend and such.
i am really missing those games today. 90% of pc game releases feel like youre playing on a console. modern pc game is basicly a console in disguise (and most of them want you to plug in a gamepad aswell). where are those classic nerdy pc mouse clickedyclick games? and i really got more into indie games as of late due to it. Games like rimworld or project zomboid and alike are exactly that... classic pc titles i enjoy clicking around with my mouse that remind me of why i got into pc games over console in the first place.
For someone who wants to buy a gaming pc for the first time, what spec requirements are needed to play fully modded Xcom 2 WOTC. What is the price range to get a competent gaming pc to play this game modded.
I only have this game on ps4 and I envy the mods you can do to this brilliant game.
Shadowrun series has three great turn based. Shadowrun Returns, Dragonfall, and Hong Kong. Not as polished looking as XCOM, but a great play through.
I’m coming from WH40k Chaosgate daemon hunters cuz I’ve heard that it’s similar to this. If y’all haven’t tried it out yet y’all should it’s a banger.
There was a mobile strategy game for Warhammer that was really fun (Spacewolves I think it was called) but there was massive paywalls in it, like you had to spend money to upgrade your troops or there were certain levels that were so ridiculously impossible you couldn’t progress. Haven’t tried Chaosgate yet tho
You should check out Valkyria Chronicles 4, similar kind of strategy game but with a slightly different second second gameplay loop
One of the Greatest Turned-Based game that's not being mentioned a lot, is the open-source The Battle For Wesnoth. I'd say the most overshadowed and underrated strategy game ever made in PC history. Had the best and smartest community in multiplayer, that were close to some kind of a hidden chess club.
Have you ever tried, Phantom Doctrine, or Phoenix Point? P.P. is hard! Lol
Xcom 1 longwar mod is to date my favorite tactical game ever. Xcom 2 just seemed to easy. I never felt a mission was 1 error away from going sideways. In fact it became so easy that if I lost a soldier I considered the run a failure. Of course since I had an older machine when it came out the 5 minute load screens between starting and ending a mission.
I’m really enjoying marvels midnight sun, never played x comm but I’ll give it a try after midnight sun
I'm literally in the same frame of mind as you lol Hooked to Midnight Suns also, now looking into Xcom 2 once I finish.
Good to hear people are enjoying it. It's all relative in terms of sales - perhaps not as successful but doesn't mean it isn't worth playing. I'll have to find time to jump in
@Napyet Your video was pretty much just the thing I needed, was very informative so thanks for that!
chimera squad was my fave due to less overwatch spamming and base building. but yeah developing the characters as rookies who can die would be fun there too!
Part of me wonders if they are having trouble deciding what to do for an X-Com 3 setting. Personally I think the next logical move would be humanity, and its allies from Chimera squad establishing off world colonies with the player being the X-Com commander assigned to a colony world that finds itself under attack, and temporarily cut off from Earth (Thus preventing the player from just calling for reinforcements to deal with the attackers)
War of the chosen end scene forshadows what’ll happen next. Most likely going to be inspired by the terror from the deep ganme
Over 400 hours deep on pc. Currently dipping my toes in with mods trying the long war of the chosen mod and some skin and tactical to freshen up the game. My type of game the xcom franchise
I bought xcom2 years ago but never played it until a few weeks ago. What a tactical masterpiece. Absolutely loving it.
Playstation's end of the year sale has the collection (base game, expansion, DLC packs) for NINETY PERCENT OFF; $9.99
I recently started playing Enemy Within for the first time since XCOM2 came out, and I'm blown away by the creepy atmosphere. I'd forgotten how much I loved that, and how much a part it was of XCOM's appeal. The sequel is vastly superior in every way, mechanically, but part of me wishes they'd just remade XCOM1 for XCOM2, rather than advancing the plot.
I'm still partial to XCOM EW with Long War. XCOM 2 unfortunately didn't hit the same with me, but it's still great and managed to be one of my most played games. XCOM EW is just so spectacular though, I can never get enough. I would like to see what they do with XCOM 3 though. Every few years I try to hunt for a game to scratch the same itch and wonder why no other developer has made it happen.
"The voiceovers become annoying." Man I love the part of the game where I'm trying to scan a point of interest and then the aliens make the globe glow red and central chimes in woth a "COMMANDER THE ALIENS CONTINUE TO MAKE PROGRESS ON THE AVATAR PROJECT IF WERE GOING TO STOP THEM WELL NEED TO MOVE QUICKLY" and i have to remind him that it's fucking May and I already knocked them down to 1/12 because the covert ops was either doing that or risk a kidnapping for 40 supply.
@0:56 Marvels Eternal suns or Marvels Midnight Suns lmao?
There Is only a few games the community keep alive for so long. This is one of them. I still play with mods and they ranked up a lot since my 2nd unmodded campaing. I'm on my 6th.
More than 900+
While i agree the "not more than normal". I also agree isn't a 4D chess on base game if you learn everything quickly.
I love xcom with all my heart even as a console player dealing with crashes and other BS
Get the pc version. It's much more stable! 💯 👍🏾
I have 1000+ hours since it's release (since the original X-COM release I play this franchise). Yesterday I started a new campaign (the 54th according to my save name). Is it worth? Modded or unmodded, just play it... specially if you never played it. It's the kind of game that made a lot of folks to like the genre and inspired other devs
I am not familiar with Xcom2. I only have player Enemy Unknown. I am just wondering, are soldiers still stuck with their default class or could we change them? Like retrain them. This is one aspect of the game that constantly annoys me. When I want to get a Support class but all I get are Heavy Weapons or some other class. I think we should be able to retrain our soldiers, instead of throwing them out.
Started from scratch again in 23!
This game is an all time great. The mods are just the chef's kiss. There is easily a sequels worth of additional enemy and gameplay content via mods. The upgrade systems across all of the mechanics of the game are so well balanced and flow so well throughout a campaign, and are still unparalleled. The core gameplay on the Battlefield has been caught up to by many recent titles. There still has not been an Xcom like game that has handled the upgrade, item, rpg, overworld strategy and combat close to this game. The overall cohesion of all of the different systems in Xcom2 has never been met or surpassed.
Gears Tactics was a good fill in. Not quite to Xcom obviously but there was a nice amount of variety.
I have been looking for xcom like game squad based great visual customisation perma death . There’s nothing . I am still playing xcom2 and still keep going back to it.
To me.. XCOM 2 keeps calling me each year and almost everytime I hit up the Steam Workshop to get the new or even updated mods. Played the heck out of vanilla WOTC back then. Now I mix and match different mods every playthrough so that each time I play there's something new to play with.
But how does it compare to Phoenix Point?
Played the first game to death on the 360. So I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get xcom2/war of the chosen bundle for 10 bucks. Can't say id spend the original price of 90, but it's definitely a must play if you like turn based games.
You should do a video about what mods (if any) are still working these days. Last time I played, so many appeared broken.
A lot of the old ones have gotten updates - it's a good idea thanks
oh they work, i have butchered my game with mods lmao
how can i run xcom because it won't launch?
Played this for 6 months drove me crazy 🤣. Screaming my Soilders names or nick names, missed you had 70% and you flank them 😂
Facts!!!!!! Have you had 80% and miss?
4:48 Honestly I would have preferred a remake of Terror from the Deep. It could have retained the creepy atmosphere that I loved about EW.
Xcom 2 is my favorite game of the decade, and mods did so much. My biggest wish is for them to make a Star Wars Xcom game, that would combine two of my favorite things and could ba amazing.
Then you are lucky because it was leaked that some former Xcom 2 devs are making a Star Wars turn based game.
@@Max-zs6ur I will always take leaks with a pinch of salt. A game like that done right is up my alley.
I wanted to like Midnight Suns from Firaxis mor than I did, the card mechanic wasn't for me.
I agree that the setting and "vanilla" feel of designs makes the 2 less narratively engaging, but honestly, if we are talking about strategy games about alien invasion with small squads and time stop mechanics, you just will not ever beat the original U.F.O. when it comes to atmosphere. The mutants created by the aliens in that game were something Beksiński or Geiger would approve, and the world and retro analogue feel of everything made the setting gritty and the gore made it haunting. Can someone remaster that game finally? I haven't played it in 14 years.
Even though it’s the best and gold standard of the genre, I understand some don’t like tactical strategy games. For those of us that do though, if you ever play xcom 2 you better bet everyone REALLY plays it. Havent seen a person on steam that likes xcom not have hundreds of hours if not thousands playing this game. 890 and starting a new game today myself.
XCom 2 is one of the most playable, memorable, and flat-out best games ever created. And it baffles me how little love the XCom franchise gets. A new XCom 3 game might not be a blockbuster hit like say Call of Duty, but if it's done right (like XCom 2) people will buy it and play it for 10 years or more. XCom is a game you can play forever. I can't really say the same thing for 90% of the other games out there.
Is the game still online on ps5 me and my friend trying to know before we buy
its on sale rn for $2
just get it atp
Get the pc version only! It's much more stable.
This video makes me want to play it again. I have it for ps4. 😅
Absolutely yes. I think XCOM2 is still the best game of its genre
Gears tactics is aexcellent turn based tactical game as well if non of you have tryed it I would recommend it
x-com2 war of the chosen but with the Long war mod. sooo hard but an amazeing combo.
Xcom 2 has really become one of my favourite ever games with how much of my life it's drunk away
That said I haven't played it vanilla in years, like Skyrim there are so many mods that you need not play it the same way twice.
I have seen advent become the imperium of man and the sith empire. I have fought them with a squad straight out of mass effect including an actual geth. I have done runs with only melee classes and runs that have had no classes.
It truly is a wondrous thing
You have a seen a lot and have the scars to prove it! Well done Commander!
That Final Fantasy Tactics Remake should already be out, I wonder why they holding it back. Of course what would be bonkers is if the graphic be upgraded to look like that War of Visions FFT part, fully 3D characters and stages still in the style of the original FFT.
I am like a cat ready to pounce once it is announced!
Interestingly about "simplicity" I did like the original Tactics Ogre on the Snes/PS1 allot more then the PSP remake and the recent remake of that remake. Because the original game was more "simple" in its setup, while still allowing deep tactic while in a stage. The newest one that was released, I never really like those power cards that pop up everywhere in the stage, makes the early game in a stage kind of slow and Auto-Skills useless unless you grabbed 2 Auto-Skill-Up cards. They did good to remove the convoluted way you could gear up units with skills and spells to make it simpler but then failed in the actual stages with those power cards. I also don't like that Clerics are borderline useless, units take allot more damage then you can heal away and there are no defensive power-cards spawning. In the original you would win early stages just by bringing 2 Clerics and focusing enemy units that can heal, in the remake remake there is no such strategy, all you do is try to grab 2 or 3 power-cards and you can rule the battlefield.
A game you should maybe take a look at is "Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters" which is similar to X-Com.
Did you know this has just got a massive discount on steam? Views incoming 😃
Im playing this currently. Got the war of the chosen. Setting up ambushes, and when things are going well its great! But i legit got a miss at 97% i was so dumbfounded i almost started slapping myself.
The problem with turn-based games is that I can play an RTS and just hit *pause*, over and over. So much so that I have it hot keyed to my mouse
Mindshields and Mimic Beacons and Flash Bangs = GG
haven't been able to play the game or launch mods with it at all thanks to the new launcher
Short answer before watching video: YES!
I played more 500 hours. The 1st time, i played xcom2 ,2nd. Played xcom2 wotc and then i play for test mod new classes, new weapons, new enemys and etc, now i still play it with some mod and test my custom mod. In future, i will try LWOTC
PS. See my video that i test some mods.
Modding has transformd it as an experience
Not on ps4 it keeps crashing
Do you want the glowing thing? Theres a mod for that!
Anyone still play this on PS4?
I also recommend playing Divinity Original Sin 2. If you haven't already.
Just fired it up for the first time, after buying on Steam sale. Totally addicted!
Cool. I'm about to give it a go, I heard Angry Joe talking about it and it sounds like a game I shouldn't miss
I just wish there were some better mods out there to freshen the game up
Video havent started yet.
YES its great. DLC is worth it.
Modding is amazing.
Buy it. It's great.
