I don't even think you could just take whoever you want, at least it basically always seems to be partners, or some younger relatives for elderly people. And many people do go alone, so it is not anything uncommon. I like his reasoning that he is alone in representing Käärijä, so that is why he is doing this stuff alone and keeping others away from the spotlight.

Usually the rule is that the invitation must contain both names, so if The Office of the President of the Republic of Finland does not know for sure whos name to write, they don’t put it in the invitation. So it is totally Jeres own choice that he did not want her on display, not yet anyway.
